Title: IGF winners!
Post by: Guert on March 12, 2010, 12:57:57 PM
I can't seem to find a thread on that topic for some reason. So, I'm starting it!  :gentleman:

Congratulations to all winners! I'm pretty happy Monaco won two awards. I'm also glad Cactus won the Nuovo award. It would be a safe bet to assume he'll be on the official posters next year! :)

Too bad Super Meat Boy didn't get anything but I was pretty happy to see a sticker of the protagonist on Jenova Chen's suit when receiving the game developer's award for Flower.

So, once again, big congrats to all winners and hats off to the organizers! Being able to watch the show on the net was a pretty good idea! I hope the idea will be kept next year! :)

Congratulations once again! :)  :gentleman:

Definitely great to see cactus win. Congrats to everyone that won.

It was an amazing show, IMO. I'm glad for Monaco's and Limbo's victories (although I kinda disagree with the Art award) and specially Tuning's.

Cactus fucking ruled.

Just reposting it here so people viewing the thread have it.

I loved the Mega64 indie game movies at the end. Star Guard in particular had me laughing out loud.

Congradu-well-done to all who won.

It was really sad to see that Super Meat Boy didn't get an award :(
And the whole ceremony seems... akward...
But otherwise a lot of fun!

Hosting an award show is not as easy as it seems. The hosts did a good job, taking that they are not, from my knowledge, trained or experienced in hosting shows. I can be wrong though, but it felt as if it was their first experience doing something like that. Standing in front of a crowd to talk about your game or your opinion on something you are passionated about, like game design, is one thing; standing up in front of a crowd and entertain them by making simple jokes, links and giving awards, that's another game.

Still, I think they did a good job. They made me laugh a few times :)

I would have thought that the IGF should have been held in someones community hall or back garden and the awards made out of pipe cleaners, paper and duct tape. 3 bags of potato chips to go round for eats.

Yes, I conceed, and I am probably not capable to do such...
So yeah, my apologies

Glad to see Closure win something. Shame about Meat Boy, though.

Also, while I get that the hosts are inexperienced, the show was still awkward. The chick kinda ruined it for me when she chuckled at every joke she made. Cactus was funny as hell, though.

No worries :) Sometimes, the hosting was kind of ackward, some punches that were good fell flat and they lacked some emotions at certain points. I hope they come back next year after a bit of coaching. That would be sweet :)

And yes, that girl somehow felt out of place. And the jokes she presented weren't funny, in my opinion. Who the hell wrote those anyways? We shall find the culprits and send Indie Man punish them. ;)

It felt like they were trying to emulate hosts from like film awards or whatever, which is totally the wrong vibe here.

Did they get the hosts on short notice or something cause they seemed really awkward presenting the awards.

I think it was just nerves. But, yeah, some of the otherwise good jokes kinda fell flat due to delivery. And I agree with Radix; it would suit the IGF awards if it were more casual. Less Oscars and more MTV Movie Awards, I guess.

How about not modelling them after any movie awards at all (especially not crappy ones). How about just rolling with what feels natural instead of trying to ape something else. That's what I feel is needed for this ceremony.

I don't imagine that indie game developers are a particularly charismatic bunch. ;) But despite the nervous awkwardness, I thought that the hosts were really cute and brave.

Warren Spector as the GDC award host was great. You really notice that the devs from the bigger studios give a lot more interviews and so they're not as nervous when speaking to a larger crowd.

Yep, he has a Monaco topic here.

They should have had Mega 64 host the awards, alongside Cactus.

She looks like a cool girl. I would've personaly skipped the manhugs and focused entirely on her. She's smart and a good game designer. Wait... does these last sentences make me look like a creep? Oh well :)

I would just laugh uncontrollably for a few seconds, and then try to stare down her shirt... oooh, right.

Seriously though, I think they did a great job! I like that the IGF awards are presented by indie developers.

The acceptance speeches were good and nice as always. They are what you expect them to be, with a few exceptions of course (Cactus this year, Alexander Porechnov (Musaic Box) super-cute speech last year).

Also, very happy that Monaco won! I voted for it :)

I didn't mean to suggest that they model it after any movie awards. It was just an example of different styles and how I feel it should be more free spirited and loose than ceremonial.

Really, didn't any of them do that..!? I noticed Cactus didn't, but I assumed he was trying to do some kind of gay joke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx-NtpYoqes#t=1m58s) that misfired and unfortunately ended up being disrespectful to Erin (whether or not that was the intent).

I guess handshaking isn't traditionally a very feminine introduction, perhaps it felt awkward?

You are not thinking right when on stage. It's hard enough to even grab the trophy and not drop it, neverming trying to figure out if you need to hug or handshake someone. I don't remember what I did

It was a good point, though. Awards ceremonies are extremely awkward, badly scripted, and unfortunately lots of people love that for some reason. Touching speeches, etc. UgggAGHAGHAGHGhh disgusting.

It's cool when I win, though. I don't mind ;D

I liked it, but yeah most of the presenters were pretty awkward. Jessica Chobot was the only one where her enthusiasm showed through. The award winners and Mega 64 made up for the awkwardness. Also, I think part the reason Erin didn't get any hugs was because she was holding the award (and that was part of Cactus' act).

Looking forward to Monaco! :)

I'm a little disappointed that TRAUMA didn't win anything considering it was nominated for 3 categories and Krystian is a hell of a nice guy that spent a lot of time making it.

I think it could have taken the art award over limbo just because limbo had already won an award, but I haven't played both games so I can't really comment.

Good form giving cactus the Nuevo award. I couldn't tell if he was not talking because he was making a joke or because he was just about to cry or some combination of the two.

Out of interest.

Money.

Are there any cash valleys associated with these awards or just some minor publicity?

For example the Oscars are often roughly measured against the extra revenue they will bring in.

What value of financial gain or exposure do you think is gained from winning one of these awards?

First there is a lot of money(depending on your point of view. It all depends on what kind of other income you have while creating your game.)  coming with the award: $2500 for one and $10.000 for the seumas grand prize.
And then there is a lot of publicity of course!

I watched the show live and really enjoyed it, awkwardness and all. The hosts did a great job, but maybe I'm just saying that because I'm a fan of their work. I was really excited to see Monaco win those awards and was touched by Andy's speeches. I was happy with the rest of the winners too, though saddened that Super Meat Boy didn't win.
