Title: Super Combine RPG
Post by: CyanPrime on May 22, 2010, 12:00:46 PM
I couldn't find a thread on it here, and I was wondering what everyone thought about it.

So, thoughts?

Funny you should post about that - I played it for the first time last week.  I really quite liked the first section (though the battles were quite fatiguing in their quantity), and I was moved by it.  The hell section I survived for ... not very long and it generally didn't interest me.

The hell section? I've never even played this myself (1: it was made in RPG maker, and 2 it just seems like dramaqueening IMO) What is the Hell section?

Oh wait I read it as 'columbine'.  I take it that you're not talking about super columbine massacre rpg then?

Look up the internet for a walkthrough or video playthrough if you want to know.  (Also, it's not a long game - you can play it in half an hour).

(1: don't be a bigot and 2: I don't know what you mean by that - I haven't read much by the guy who made it, but it seemed pretty sincere to me)

Back when I discovered the game I was heavily into the columbine massacre story, and the idea of a game based on it sounded great.
To put it directly, that super columbine massacre rpg is plain simply a piece of garbage released so the creator could cause a stir and get some publicity for himself, succeeding.
Just take a look at the title: "Super Columbine Massacre RPG"
That's almost mocking a very serious situation that claimed the lives of many innocent students (and as far as I remember, teachers too).
I would love to see a good game based on this story, but this one is just a very amateurish attempt at a game, probably the creator's first ever.

Sarcasm alone hardly drives a subject forward people. Maybe you guys would be more interested in elaborating? Either that or leaving the topic alone is fine.

I have no idea what is going on in this thread. Can someone enlighten me?

EDIT: Okay, we *ARE* talking about Super Columbine Massacre RPG. Nevermind then!

Looks like they went a bit overboard with the postprocessing effects, but I'm still stoked.

I have not - I'll keep it in mind to track down.

I'm not too pushed about professional standards myself.

Yes, their first and only game.

Do you have any evidence of that beyond your reading of the game?  (which is disputable).  For instance, in anything he has written about the game.

i think the guy's knowledge of the columbine massacre event in real life shows that he wasn't *just* doing this for self promotion. it's possible that was one of the motives of course, but for someone to have that degree of detailed knowledge of the subject shows they must have spent a lot of time studying it, and one wouldn't do that if one intended only to produce a piece of garbage or a quick hack job for purposes of controversy.

It's a crappy, horrible game to play, but I think it's pretty foolish to think that it was only made for the sake of controversy. The dude had something to say (or rather, I think, some questions to ask), and picked exactly the right medium for it.

I'm not going to go as far as defending it as "Teh Best Game Evar Maybe!!!1oneone!!!" but if you can't see it as viable and worthwhile, and see only trash, then what does that say about your attitude to games as a medium? What, games aren't ALLOWED to explore issues like school shootings? They're somehow too trivial for that?

If there are people who think that, that's cool. But I wonder what they're doing on an indie games forum where we're supposed to be the people who appreciate the form for what it is and what it can be, and where many people consider it their job to push the boundaries.

EDIT: Also, I thought this topic would be about some game in which you play as the Combine in the Half Life universe. That shit would rock.

In Body Harvest for the N64, one of the vehicles you can drive is a combine. You can use it to run over zombies, which gives you shotgun ammo.

Body Harvest is awkward and in many ways broken, but incredibly ambitious and really fun to play if you can get into it.
