Title: Quoting the Post Immediately Above Your Post
Post by: st33d on June 01, 2010, 06:49:25 AM
It's pretty obvious, that when you post, it's either in direct reply to the post above or it happens to be an isolated statement. It's almost insulting to read a post with the entire previous post in it as it suggests I'm too thick to impose a context on what I'm reading myself. So why the hell is post after post on this forum abusing the quote button? No other forum does this. Is this a running joke I missed out on?

You can save yourself a lot of effort by using carats to answer previous posts if you wish: ^

The number of carats equals the number of posts previous that you're replying to. It works on other message boards.

i don't understand your grammar or english, could you clarify whether you are against or for quoting the post above your own

And I half expected this thread to just be full of people quoting the post above.

I think that he is against it.

i thought so at first too, but he then goes on about how the forum's policy is retarded, but the forum's policy is to warn people against people quoting the post directly above their own, so it'd seem that if his and this forum's policy were the same he wouldn't question why we do things this way or express surprise and say that supposedly no other forum does it this way and that way do

anyway, this is what i do:

when re-reading the quoted text is important to my answer, i quote

when it isn't, i just use @[person's name]. much simpler.

F'serial, you two. Must you always have such low expectations of the forum's users?

Title: Re: Quoting the Post Immediately Above Your Post
Post by: Oddball on June 01, 2010, 07:02:33 AM
I don't really have a policy on this as I can't say I've ever considered it a serious issue. Sometimes I quote, sometimes I don't, and sometimes I'll do the @[username] thing. Never used ^ as I've never seen that used much on the forums I frequent. Does this behaviour really offend some people?

When I'm replying to a specific statement in the post above me, I quote that statement. That's it.

Title: Re: Quoting the Post Immediately Above Your Post

I was just wondering why people did it.

I mean, if you post after someone, then you generally read that post as replying to the one above anywhere else on the internet.

It's like the expectations of the reader are lower here or something. It's like the casual gaming equivalent of using a message board.

Not saying it's entirely wrong. I just don't get it.

If I'm replying to something above me in a popular thread, there's the chance more posts will be added between that post and mine- that's an instance in which I would quote like that.

But unless it's a quote of an excessively long post, why would it be annoying anyway?

Title: Re: Quoting the Post Immediately Above Your Post

I hate the ^^ system, as it's used differently in so many different places, in some; ^^ simply means the post above and in others each ^ signifies each post above.

I agree that quoting someone directly above you is kinda stupid, unless you want to respond to specific parts of their post, and I know that I'm more than guilty of overusing the quote button.

But it is useful for replying to posts 3 or more posts up, especially when there's more than one thread of discussion going through the thread.

but nested quotes can get friggin annoying, case in point, a recent example from the grumpy old programmer room:

My dynamic_cast keeps failing and I don't know what to do. This is driving me crazy.
can you check the type with rtti?
Even typeid fails... Which is fucking weird, because it (dynamic_cast) works just fine for a different object, created in the exact same way, but from a different class derived from the same class as the one it fails for. It works just fine to dynamic_cast my initial variable, but later calling it on a pointer fails.

Dynamic_cast and typeid only work on classes that have or inherit virtual functions.  Is that the problem?
No. Like I said, it works for a different class derived from the same base class sharing the exact same conditions. All functions in the base class, including the destructor, are virtual.

Are you trying to dynamic_cast a pointer?  The only other thing I can think of is that you aren't dereferencing the pointer.

Already tried that. I don't need to, though, since I'm fine off using it as a pointer, since I just need to call two member functions, which -> allows me to do just fine.

Yeah, the carat business is either there on a forum or it isn't. And I've never seen it used here, so I guess it doesn't belong.

I think it was indeed page 57 of the Grumpy Old Programmer Room that set me posting this thread.

Wow, it took me forever to figure out that you had written anything in your post.

I also think I'm starting to become a grumpy old veteran. I used to enjoy the derails and memetic nature of this place. Now it's starting to annoy me, at times. Especially seeing how the quote-discussion is fairly interesting.

The number of carats equals the number of posts previous that you're replying to. It works on other message boards.
This sounds like a terrible idea.

It would turn "Warning - while you were typing umpteen new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post." into something entirely glorious.

Aww.

Anyway, I'd just like to say that, seriously, quoting the post right above you, unless you're going to reply to specific pieces of it one by one, is disnecessary.

You can use @ person-I'm-replaying-to instead of quoting, if the post you want to quote is ginormous, or quote it but remove all the text and replace it with "stuff" or something like that.

Avoid letting quotes nest. It's annoying as fuck to read a thread where that happens. Remove the previous nested quotes when quoting someone, to keep it clear.

Other than those cases, it's all game.
