Title: Dependant [Up on FGL for testing]
Post by: compositeredfox on July 11, 2010, 10:52:00 PM
Hey everyone,

My name's Fernando, I live in Buenos Aires and this is my first endeavour as an indie. About a month ago I went crazy and quit my job in the industry to do games. After a few weeks of intense prototyping I decided on this concept for a flash game and I'm now working full time on it. Since I'm running out of money, I'm keeping this one short and sweet with as much polish as I can put.

It's a flash based puzzle game, part jigsaw, part sliding puzzle, where you move or rotate segments of an image, affecting the others segments (i.e. move a part to the left, and the other ones moves to the right), and you have to find the combination of movements to get the image back together.

The background images are particle-based generative pieces that flow as you solve the puzzle.

Here's a few screens:

And a trailer!

I'll be keeping this updated :)

EDIT:
The game is now up for testing at FGL!. If you have an account, check it out here:

Looking tantalizing, fox! I'm glad you decided post it on the forums, motivation is key to success.
Fill us in more on what we're seeing:
What are the words at the top of the screen, and what do they mean?
What's in the top-right?
An explanation of the mechanics you have in mind would also be great as well.
Regardless, keep us informed and good luck with your career shift  :coffee:
I want to see this closed beta!

Thanks a lot for the kind comments, sir!
The words above are the name of the level (wich right now just spells what the game needs the most), and the amount of moves you made.

The mechanics are all about relationships. The game plays by clicking and dragging the parts of the image. Each part moves in only one particular axis (left-right, up-down, rotates, etc). When you move a part, it may move the other parts, either the same way or the other way.

Here's a screen from the first prototype:

So you have to move the parts and remember the relationships between them, and get all of them in the right position. It can be quite tricky.
you're in top in the list, be happy

There's been a severe lack of sexy lately! Hope this is still going well, looking forward to some updates. Also, did you recover your code for that music program?

Thanks! Things are going smoothly, I'll post some updates and screenshots next week.
And no, I didn't recover those files, guess I'll code it again.

I'm doing a closed beta on the first few levels. If anyone is interested in trying it and answering a few short questions, let me know by PM (You'll get in the credits and have my eternal thanks).

Oh and here are a couple of screens just so this post isn't so self interested ;)

A quick update. Although it's now called Dependant I'm keeping the post title =)

I've got all the screens working, multi language support and I got some very positive and thorough feedback from the testers, wich were awesome. Now I'll be working on making levels and generative music! and have a trailer ready by the end of the week, so be hyped.

Screenies:

I don't think I'll get a trailer today, but progress is good. I've been working on some 3d backgrounds:

And a nifty little level editor!

dude...if you get some good music with this. I'm 100% certain this will be a massive success.  ;D:handmoneyR:

The art makes me want to listen to the Pixel Junk Eden Soundtrack
The music is my main problem right now. Anything I make sounds awful. Any (free) help will be most appreciated ;)

Whee! I'm in the final countdown!
I have just 20 levels to go, a lot of tweaking to do and I got the awesome guys at Leemus Music (http://www.hs.facebook.com/pages/Leemus-Music/129593640396348?v=info) to do the soundtrack.

And best of all, it's trailer time!

You got it in 22 moves! Next time try to get it in 1!  :addicted:

Love the game, love the atmosphere, love the fact that you don't HAVE to be good at it to advance, and I LOVE the music and LOVE the graphics... So yeah, the game is alright  :-*

cool, yea the tutorial was pretty straight forward but couldn't figure out the 1st level. it feels like i'm missing something.

i also noticed that i lose focus at times (OS X/chrome) when i was trying to drag the ring a long distance.

When I made the tutorial more explanatory (ergo, longer) people would say it was unnecessary, so I trimmed it down. But yeah, the first level is kind of different from the rest maybe.

i also noticed that i lose focus at times (OS X/chrome) when i was trying to drag the ring a long distance.
 :gentleman:
I'll try to look into that. Losing focus as in the game not responding after dragging the cursor out?

btw, solipskier rocks. As in, a lot. :)
