Title: Visiting Tokyo
Post by: Taiko on August 07, 2010, 07:16:54 AM
So, I'm going to be visiting Tokyo next week.  Anything game related I should make a point to see while I'm there?

I guess checking out some arcades is a must.

I do believe there is a display of hundreds of Nintendo Hanafuda cards somewhere in Kyoto, though I cannot for the life of me find it through Google.  That might be fun to check out if you can find it and have the chance.

You might already know about it, but I'd suggest Akihabara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akihabara). It's kind of an electronics district, but it's got a few huge (4 or so stories, if I remember correctly) arcades, and if you're actually looking for Japanese games to buy, there are a lot of video game stores around the area.

Also, the above link was Wikipedia's article on it. Here's (http://wikitravel.org/en/Akihabara) Wikitravel's page, which might have more of the sort of info you're looking for.

You need to go to the Hello Kitty store, just to say you've been there. Also, Kaiten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conveyor_belt_sushi).

When I went to Japan, one store caught my eye the most: Yodobashi. It has literally EVERYTHING.

But there's so much to do in Tokyo that I suggest slowing down time to see it all.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!  I'll be sure to check out Akihabara and the arcades...and sushi...and the electronics stores...suddenly I'm wondering if I have enough time.

Yeah, Japan's kinda the last country where arcade culture still exists.

If you go to Akihabara, make sure that you get to see it at night. Like, make a day of it, and stay until the evening when all the lights go on. It was awesome when I was both standing in Akihabara and viewing it from the Tokyo Tower at night.

There's also Harajuku if you're interested in cosplay. I didn't have a chance to stop by when I was in Tokyo but I hear that at nights on the weekend there's always cosplayers there.
