Title: List of active members
Post by: tesselode on August 23, 2010, 01:04:50 PM
I think we need a topic with a list of active members. That way it will be easier to recognize people and get to know the community. This forum's pretty big, after all.

And the topic needs to be stickied. It can be this topic, if you want.

There's this:

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?action=mlist;sort=posts;start=0

I'd be concerned that something else might degenerate into weird popularity contests. What did you have in mind?

He wants to know who the cool kids are so he can kiss their asses.  :giggle: :handpointR:

I'm on page 6 and yet to release a game or really do anything of merit. This is a terrible way to find the people to kiss the bottoms of.

THIS IS NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST.

It's just a list of people you might come across when browsing the forum so that you can recognize them when you see them.

I don't understand the benefit of being able to recognize people based on a list, rather than on past experiences with them.

I recognize people via shit they've made/said that I've liked. AKA do cool things and you'll get recognized more.

Your list idea makes no sense.

I love how the blue bars by our names show what fraction of mellys postcount we have.

Shame you can't sort it by posts per day. I think I'd be second on that list, making me an Important Indie Figure(tm).

I agree that a user list topic is disnecessary. If you hang out in the forums long enough you'll get to know people just fine. Postcounts mean jack shit around here anyway.

Besides mine, of course. :gentleman: Holy crap I post so much.

I don't know, Melly, I think quantity might be mutually exclusive to quality in your case. (http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2698/emotsmugb.gif) ph my god im sorry

It might be cool if you could get a list that broke up members into functional categories, ie programmer, artist, musician.

And then of course the "Made games in klik and play for a few years but doesn't have them anymore" tag for me.

for a list of people by categories, there's this:

http://tig.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Developers
http://tig.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Musicians
http://tig.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Artists
etc.

somewhat incomplete, but feel free to add to it

uuhh lists like these make me sick.  Seems quite counter to the Indie spirit to make a list which pretty much is just a list of the popular developers.

do you mean the wiki, nate? it's not a list of just the popular developers, anyone can be added, and should be, it's just that it just started and we have a lack of editors writing for it, but eventually we'd like to make it as complete as possible. i also don't feel like those listed are exclusively popular ones, there are plenty of unknown developers with articles in the wiki even now.

I don't think he meant the wiki lists, just popular user lists in general.

I'm page 9 if we're talking abut post count but page 5 if you sort the list by "Date Registered".
Yes, I registered one week after the creation of this forum.  :eyebrows:

By "Date Registered" I'm on page 4 :monoclepop: I joined in the first week the forum opened and didn't even know. Well I never.

I'm on page 148.

We should hold some votes to determine who wins certain categories. Derek would be "Most Sexy" by default, but who knows where we all might fall?

I suggest we have votes pertaining to Most Indie, Most Similar to Cactus Besides Cactus, and Cutest Smile.

Sorry.

Anyway. An active user list will be constantly changing (relevant for a short period) so the best way to figure it out was already suggested, just become active yourself and see who keeps popping up. Eventually you'll figure out who's active.

Getting back to the original topic..

I'm not sure how we would even make such a list, considering new people keep coming and old people drop off the face of the planet and such. We already have a introductory thread (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=45.0) to see where people are coming from and what their interests are and such.
It seems like the OP wants a similar list as the introductory, except everybody needs to keep updating it with recent information, which sounds weird and impossible.

If you want to see what people have made in the past and such, a lot of people do have personal websites linked to their profile, which is probably your best bet on finding out who people are, and what they have done/are doing. Also there's a lot of stuff in the profiles page like Last Active date, and last posts, posting statistics, etc. I guess we could modify that member list page and add a column for Active Date to sort people's activity, but not sure what that'll do for recognizing people.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what's wrong with just jumping into discussions, and recognizing people because you've bumped into them here and there.

I'm near the top of page 6. I post here pretty sporadically. Perhaps when I make it to page 1, I'll win a Derek DateTM?

Yeah I guess now that I understand that it's an open wiki it's a bit better. I can certainly see the benefits of a list though.  I wouldn't even mind a list of popular developers or popular games it's just disheartening I think for a developer who is making games to look at the list (supposedly of all developers) and be like oh, I guess I don't count as an indie developer because I'm not on the list.

But wouldn't you recognize the active members you might run across on the forums while posting...while posting? There is not difference if I see someone on a list and then see them post something, unless the list has to do with spammers or gurus or something.

I am an active member. I have been more active over the last couple of months because I have been procrastinating. When I go quiet, you'll all know that it's because I'm doing Important And Groundbreaking Indie Development work, thus making me a more awesome TIGer even though I'll be posting less.

I don't see why a list of "active members" would be useful to anyone except spammers.

Title: Re: List of active members
Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on August 25, 2010, 06:14:21 PM
there are a lot of very famous indie devs who aren't on that list yet, though. cliffski (gratuitous space battles) is one example. it's really a matter of time and it being a new wiki and having a lack of editors. feel free to add yourself though

Please put me down under "inactive members" as I want to ensure that when I eventually go inactive, the list is not out of date.

The link in my sig leads to a list of indie devs that lend to my own tastes. In its defense it does actually contain up-and-coming and generally ignored devs as well as popular ones and it'll probably never be complete but at the end of the day I can't justify adding just anyone and a lot of people seem get use out of it (100 people each week or so).

I must agree that post-count means nothing. I was once the top poster on TIGS. Sure, being there gives you a good share of skin-tight jeans, fancy jewels and lightly dressed women... But in the end, it's not worth the price. Plus you always need to report to your pimp. Oh wait, no, that's prostitution.

I mean, popularity contest means nothing. It's the performance and what's inside you that counts. Just like prostitution.

Well, most members on the first page don't actually post much (apart from Melly and CAsinclair) and many of them don't even visit the forums anymore. they just happened to have been there for a longer time.
