Title: Games for LAN parties
Post by: The Monster King on September 03, 2010, 05:24:39 AM
'ssup guys it's me The Monster King

i am going to a LAN party this weekend and i want to bring cool stuff

what should i bring guys

mostly indie games but i'm open to other stuff... if only there was a way to download games on the internet for "free"...

we played Super Cock Blockers last time and it was a blast

a blast from the cock

what do you guys suggest? We are 20+ so games where there is no limit on players is a top notch idea but i dont mind lower numbers because we dont always end up playing the same game

Probably not what you're looking for but I've had a lot of fun playing custom maps on warcraft3 over LAN when I have friends over sometimes.

You should try out Toblo. It is basically CTF game with destructible environment. Game can be played up to four players. Toblo won best student game award in IGF 2007.

Descent, Quake, and Quake II. These were all classic standbys of the Lan parties of my youth. All of them are fast-based and frenetic. And all of them will allow you to install and play on multiple machines with only one hard copy. (ideal for Lan party) I also understand that the original Serious Sam is a blast to play co-op.

For FPS there's also Smokin' Guns (http://www.smokin-guns.net/), a western style shooter, and (my personal favorite multiplayer FPS,) Urban Terror (http://www.urbanterror.info/news/home/).

Soldat and Teeworlds are both excelent. You might also try Infiniminer. I've only played it by myself (:'(), but it could be a fun, light LAN game. TF2 is also a fun game for LAN parties, but only if the group is large enough and everyone has a copy.

Play OpenTTD have a map set to be JUST small enough for the amount of people playing so theirs more competition, that and you can get a better chance of running over their buses with your train.

a nice multiplayer top down shooter.

I also understand that the original Serious Sam is a blast to play co-op.
It's the best fps for co-op that isn't Operation Flashpoint largely because it supports sixteen players and is silly. It's not free but you can get it cheaply from Good Old Games. No DRM so you can do the thing that people do at LANs when they aren't playing and "share" it around. Out of the two original episodes Second Encounter is probably the best for co-op as there's more opportunities to split up and accomplish goals at the same time.

Die By the Sword is pretty frickin' hilarious when playing with other people once you get used to it.

Unreal Tournament. Takes two seconds to install and is simple as dirt.

I guess something like parasite would be cool if you can't see eachothers screens (Basically it's a bit like mafia/werewolf; you're on a spaceship and one of the players is infested with a parasite and has to infect or kill the other players, while trying not to be found out)

I've also had fun playing risk maps (middle earth/WoW risk, though the latter is a bit too slow at the end) but it quickly turns into a 1v1 with all of the other players wiped out.

Also DotA I guess, though I don't play it myself.

Can't really think of much atm sorry.

If you have access to the internets in your LAN party, create a private room in Transformice (http://transformice.com/en/) and have everyone join it for epic lols  :) This game is the most fun with over 20 players, so I think it would be perfect for a big LAN.

Warcraft 3 is always nice, although it's not very indie. DotA (http://www.playdota.com/) is the best map and I recommend it always. If you don't want to be competitive, you can download one of the AI DotA maps and play 5 people vs. bots.

Other custom maps I enjoy are Warlock (http://www.warlockbrawl.com/), Smash TV Arcade (http://war3.incgamers.com/?p=mod&m=391) and Doodad Defence (http://war3.incgamers.com/?p=mod&m=9702).

I have some real fond memories of Serious Sam on LAN. We usually played a map, I think it was a custom one, that puts you in some kinda desert environment and unleashes hordes of every enemy type in the game on you in waves. Brainless fun doesn't get much better than that.  >:D

Turn-based strategy games don't work very well with a high number of players. I like Wesnoth, but I wouldn't want to play it with five other people, because then I'd only really be playing it a sixth of the time.

I'll just recommend Subvein (http://subvein.net/) again. It's fresh and very cool, I like to think of it as a mixture of Soldat and GTA 2.. with leveling up and special powers. Best top-down multiplayer shooter.

And then you have someone huddle up to you and play Marshmallow Duel (http://mduel2k5.spadgos.com/mduel96/about.php) together.

Oh, of course: Minecraft!

Starcraft! There's an old debug CD Key that was never taken out of the retail product that lets you do full installs. Can't play online, but perfect for LAN parties.

I always loved playing big LAN games of Starcraft and DoTA (a Warcraft 3 mod).  Battlefield 1942 is also really fun with big groups because you can drive each other around in tanks, and take turns flying the plane/using the plane's gun.  Once the night starts winding down and people want something quieter, you can always gather around an Eyemaze puzzle game like Dwarf Complete.

I remember having a big LAN party at my dad's work a long time ago. Dunno what game it was with but it was a great fun.

it was a good lan party even though people were idiots and barely played any of the aforementioned indies

i have still enjoyed checking out the suggestions

we played a lot of mount & blade though!!

If you want to completely destroy a LAN party, Galcon's flash version (http://www.galcon.com/flash/) is excellent. I made the mistake of announcing it as the "installation game" that people would play while waiting for everyone to get Unreal Tournament installed. About half of the attendees formed a large group of mutinous gamers and split off from the main party, ultimately just playing Galcon all evening.

I'll just recommend Subvein (http://subvein.net/) again. It's fresh and very cool, I like to think of it as a mixture of Soldat and GTA 2.. with leveling up and special powers. Best top-down multiplayer shooter.

This man speaks truth.

This is sad, but the biggest/closest thing to a lan party I've ever been too is 4 people playing the N64, usually Turok 2, Golden Eye, Mario Party, Mario Golf etc.

I blame living most of my life in towns of < 1000 people.

It's way overshadowed by Starcraft, I suppose, but my only LAN experiences (and good ones they were) are with Total Annihilation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation).

Also, I guess I've done Jedi Knight before, if that's your thing; I think it's fun.

i dont enjoy galcon so i wouldnt recommend it for a LAN

me and like 2 other guys played subvein a bit, it would probably have been really cool if we had been more

some of us played starcraft 2 ( i was new to it so i sucked hard and swallowed ) and league of legends (which is like dota but better yeah i said it) but since those games have restrictive player caps of 8 and 10 we tried to play bigger-number games

we had a good 20 mins of super cock blockers too

i wish we'd play savage 2 again but half the people there dont like it (it plays like WoW I guess except it's a RTS for one of the players and he gives orders to the other players and they dont listen to 'em so he sighs and gives them a magic buff for their silly fight)

the popular games were Mount&Blade, CoD4 (we tried modern warfare 2 but the weird 3rd party server thing was buggy and didnt work very well) and Civ4 with its great, unfinished games

I had a LAN party with Alien Swarm a few weeks ago and it was pretty wizard :wizard::handpointR:
It's one of those games that really only works with human players, the offline version feels really dull for some reason.

Total Annihilation (and spiritual sequel Supreme Commander) are fantastic LAN games, assuming it's a long party.

Other good ones of similar length: Civilization IV, Sins of a Solar Empire

It's like playing Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 on solo, boggles my mind how that is any fun...

My LAN party experiences have all sucked. :< When there weren't assholes who made fun of me for bringing a Gamecube, the console areas were hogged by dedicated Halo machines with the same sixteen people clutching their controllers like madmen, there'd be about a hundred or so gaming on huge machines I could never dream of owning, and then there'd be the people who came to the LAN party to play WoW... by themselves. I know that there are awesome LAN parties out there, I just haven't found them yet.

I've always found Rock Band to be a good hit, though.

I've been to one of those LAN parties with 1500+ people a few years ago, and I swear to god, the more people there is the harder it is to find anyone to play with. I just stick with my close personal friends now.

LAN parties are generally most fun with a group of between 4-32 people

larger than 32 and it becomes seriously difficult to organize people to play together. it's already difficult at LAN parties with more than 8 people.

I'll have to side with this comment. A small bunch of people you know will probably always be better than a large group of no one you know.

I think the added presence of people and the atmosphere really adds to the game. If you've got a really cheesy, not fun to play alone kind of game, you can a lot more enjoyment out of it if you're laughing your ass off along with friends.

I really miss that since I've become an adult and moved to a community with people both not interested in games, or believe they are too old for games.

Definitely. I usually only play video games in a social context anymore, actually. More because I don't have much time for games than anything else, I guess.

I still enjoy a good game witha great story. Probably always will. But I have dumped 800+ hours into TF2 when all the people I chatted with were always on the servers. Best FPS chat program ever. :D

Back when I was in college (i.e. when I had friends) all we ever played on LAN was Diablo II and Counterstrike.  Wish we could have played Starcraft or Descent or Worms or something every once in a while...

Worms Armageddon is fun, as is Jedi Knight II.  Those are both pretty old games:  if you want a newer game I'd say Team Fortress 2.

Worms Armageddon won't even run properly on modern systems. The colors are all messed up, even with the latest patch. (Although I haven't tried this (http://sol.gfxile.net/ddhack/) yet.)

Worms Releaded might be an option.

It can be really frustrating when they reset the servers though.  :(

Now that you mention it, I think most of my LAN parties were spent trying to get the router to work properly.  This is back when my friends and I thought we understood computers but didn't.

Usually we would just give up and play Smash Brothers instead.

Borderlands was good brainless fun. Plus turning gravity just about off and floating through the sky while skags make badly-timed leaps at you, disappearing into the distance due to the gravity setting, made for dumb laughs.
