Title: Halo Reach
Post by: Brother Android on September 16, 2010, 07:39:46 PM
I feel weird to be the one making a topic about this, but... anyone else playing this game?

I played it today and I was truly impressed. I'm not an FPS guy at all but I thought it was a lot of fun. I was surprised at just how much they improved and changed stuff for it - it's pretty different from Halo 3 but I'm totally down with everything they changed. Whatever you might say about Bungie, they know their craft - it's a well-balanced and really compelling game, and I'm loving the survival mode.

Man, part of me wants to go all Halo fanboy here... this is a new experience for me. I'm really surprised at how much I'm enjoying this game. Honestly, I've rarely had this much fun.

I'm thinking about picking it up.  I like Halo gameplay.  One thing is that I know I'll never play mp, so that sort of mutes my enthusiasm for the series but I hear the campaign is fun so ...

It took this long for someone to make this topic?! With all the hype about it, I would have expected it before it even released. Well anyways, my roommate picked up the game earlier this week. Looks very nice but can't get excited about it since I don't have an Xbox 360

There was one. Probably on a later page of the subforum, since it was made during the beta phase thinger.

I've been rather... videogame binging on the game so far. Invasion mode is a lot of fun. The game as a whole is fun.
I'm pretty bad with the powers so far, I can pretty much only do good with 'Sprint' and the Elite equivalent. I can't for the life of me figure out how to survive using Lockdown, which is painful since I love using the shotgun. Also, I figured out with sprint you can keep your speed up while switching to the shotty by jumping and letting go of the button, but I haven't been able to do it right very many times.

I haven't played Firefight outside of matchmaking, but the changes they made to it from ODST are, well, bad. It's lost all the elegance it had, less about efficient use of weapons (two-shotting Jackals with a precision weapon is very difficult, waves of enemies are a lot less predictable, etc.) and all the default modes have infinite lives. I also liked the graphic design of ODST better, too; another issue of elegance, I guess.

Lockdown perplexes me too. And thanks for the tip; Sprint is definitely my favored power.

Anyway, I haven't played online at all, and I also haven't played ODST, so just the bare existence of Firefight is enough for me.

Sadly I think I'll have to ask for it for Christmas or something. Totally a huge Marathon/Halo/Bungie fan, but I don't think I can fit it in the budget (time or money) right now. Maybe I'll have to finish Marathon Rubicon soon instead.

It does sound pretty good from what I hear though.

I haven't played it, but from what I hear Armor Lock is one of those abilities that attract plenty of whiners.

I hear the best ways to use it are to wait for reinforcements (if you're sure they're coming), avoid damage from explosives, and cheesy stuff like destroying the vehicle trying to run you over.

Maybe when I get a 360 I'll buy Reach, if only because a friend of mine will be wanting to play with me badly. :P

I beat the campaign last night. I didn't like it as much as ODST but it does have jetpacks and that's a pretty big deal if you're awesome.

I'm just surprised it's out. I still remember the announcement vividly, and back then it seemed years away  :shrug2:

Still, I do miss not having an xbox to play it on

I actually totally figured out how to use it today. It's pretty good; it lets you charge your shield in the heat of battle, and can deflect rockets and other powerful weaponry. Plus it gets people away from you, because the explosion from it will lower their shield. It's much more useful on Firefight than Slayer, though.

Armor lock is awesome in vehicle-heavy maps. Activate just before you would get splattered. BOOOM

I'm more of a Gears of War kinda guy myself but all my friends go crazy over this series. Shooting dudes in the face is an intrinsically fun experience, and the Halo series does it pretty well. A friend pre-ordered it -- the next time I visit him we'll no doubt be all up in that shit, so to speak.

That's all I needed to know.

fish, what is your opinion on ODST?

Personally, I liked its campaign more.

played it today, my little brother bought it, I wasn't that excited most maps of the campaign look dull with the same lighting :/ Halo 3 was better at that I guess. Apart from that it was really fun to play with him :D, but still, it look and feels way too similar to halo 3 just more guns and different areas.

You guys are making me jealous...
Only about a month until I can get it. Played the beta, thought it was quite fun. Plasma grenade launcher = :-*

ODST def had some cool and innovative ideas in it's campaign, plus that piano music on the rookie levels.

This is just a straight Halo game and a good one at that. Can't fault that.

Halo is a product of the devil. It is pure evil. Turn gamers against each others!

I can't see this game title without seeing: "Halo: Reach-around"... Probably what the frat boys who play it are doing to each other :/

play it a little and found the fact that even when this is a prequel to halo.
every other spartan got wicked abilities and different body suits and stuff that was never in halo 2 or 1.
Like the ability to run up to folks from behind and stab them in the back in cod4, deploy a bubble shield from halo3, the iron man ground pound vehicles, fly with the tribes jetpack, use the spy's cloak and daggerInviswatch to sneak past folks, and use double team on your enemies.

Then john 117 must got the cheapest spartan armor ever or "too manly" to get a custom upgrade.

Other than that I find it cheap that bungie didn't give a level creator for folks to use and just left us with a large map to dump items around.

edit: oh and some how the campaign mode cutscene show off alot of ass shots.

i actually ended up playing this at an acquaintance's house, and it was pretty cool. i was going to post some quasi-NGJ about it, but i'm tired. jetpacks + hammers + some dudes face = pure and utter enjoyment, though.

Enough talk, this is a game development forum, I demand to see awesome pictures of your maps (even if I won't play them).

all the maps will look the same because all you can do is place items on them

I liked the abilities a lot. By letting you move quickly/defend yourself well, they made faster, more offensive tactics a much more viable strategy, and it really contributes to the pace of the game nicely. In the older installments you would often have to stand back and take potshots from a distance so that the enemies wouldn't destroy you up close.

Though, one thing that seriously bothered me was the jetpack.. The game has invisible boundaries that warn you that you're leaving the battlefield and give you a few seconds to get back, so you don't leave the map, but they're often placed in such a painfully artificial manner it feels like you're being penalized for using the jetpack.
