Title: Pixel face optical illusion.
Post by: PompiPompi on November 19, 2010, 01:28:55 AM
I found this really interesting. I could identify the couple very easily.
I thought it would be interesting for you too.

Oh right, it's not pixel art, more like image processing of some sort.
I am not sure how easily I would identify the couple if they wern't so well known.

I knew who it was straight away, which is weird because you can't see the facial features at all.

I wonder if it's similar to that design principle of a character being recognisable if they have a distinctive silhouette. Or perhaps (particularly with image 2) the image is so iconic that it's easy to recognise. I wonder if there's any scientific study been done into low-res image recognition.

Definitely. I don't think it's just about visual recognition. It's also about being able to deduce correct solutions from a variety of different possibilities and input:

1. It's a well-known couple.
2. The man is dressed in a suit and tie.
3. The man has gray hair and is likely middle aged.
4. There are people behind them that seem to be dressed in similar attire, so it's likely some formal event.
5. The background is trees/nature, so it's not a red-carpet event, so they're likely not movie stars or similar entertainment celebrities.
6. That kinda leaves politicians.
7. Probably a president, since it's supposed to be a well-known couple that most visitors of the site should be able to recognize.
8. It's not Bush, as the man is too tall for that.
9. It's not the Obamas, as the couple seems to be Caucasian.
10. Must be the Clintons, then.

I imagine that's the process the brain goes through. Just, like, very fast.

All I had to do is see clint'ns face shape and voila, no need for any further examination. Had it been hillary only, I dontthink i would havve guessed

That checkerboard/shadow one continues to blow my mind. They look so different in color!

That dragon thing was fun. Is anywhere an instructions for doing that? I would like to one of that kind in my room to scare other people :durr
In video the structure wasn't very clear though I understood the basic concept.

EDIT: Found instructions for the dragon. Printing it now for studying and building fun :D Let's see if I can make some own too after studying it a while.

EDIT2: Made the model but I'm slightly disappointed since it works IRL well only when looking with one eye :'( And I don't have many friends who have one blind eye... Though it seems to work when I don't focus on the creature or if I take my glasses off.

It's really simple deductive reasoning, if it were only one person I really don't think you could tell, but since it's a tall white-haired dude and a short blonde woman and both of them are wearing suits and obviously a couple it's not hard to figure out... I don't think there's an optical illusion involved.

If you had to resort to deductive reasoning to guess the first thing, then the intended effect didn't work on you. But "optical illusion" is probably the wrong term for it.

Got it instantly as soon as I saw the picture. Weird...

It's shape recognition. I instantly recognized the shape of clinton's chest and the way he dresses and he sets his tie.
The brain is very good at pattern and shape recognition. It's actually its' job .

If you blur your eyes the face actually makes more sense, you can see the nose, eyes and mouth "better".

Also this optical illusion is interesting, you have probably seen it before, if you see the girl spinning clockwise it supposedly means you use more the right side of your brain and vice-versa. It's not hard to focus and make the girl change directions though, so I don't know as a test how valid it is.

Well, I didn't do it consciously; I recognized it pretty instantly. I suppose it's still an issue of pattern recognition though.

Well, optical illusions are about playing with your mind through visuals. I think that this sort of fits in the optical illusion category... (though it's not as clear-cut as Escher's endless staircase or those moving images that aren't actually moving).

It's optical, but how is it an illusion?

What does a graphics mosaic algorithm have to do with pixel art? I don't see any illusions here, I'm going to go play Castle of Illusion on my genesis...

At first I thought it was Bush. Then I saw the hi-res and it was Clinton. I suck at recognition.

I recognized Bill Clinton pretty quickly (must have been the hair and the shape of the head, perhaps the suit as well), and inferred that it was Hillary beside him.

It's got pixels, but is it art?!? :o
