Title: Indie Game Music TIGS Post
Post by: Derek on November 20, 2010, 01:00:54 PM
I want to do a front page post about indie game music/soundtracks. What should be featured?

So far I got:

Super Meat Boy Soundtrack (http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-soundtrack)
Plants Versus Zombies Soundtrack (http://shigi.wordpress.com/) (out this Monday)
Jeriaska's Music Project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jeriaska/videogame-music-in-context-dvd-interview-series)

What else?

I absolutely love the music in world of goo!

Amnesia the dark descent has brilliant atmosphere in the music but its not terribly catchy.

Thats all i can think of for now.

Hydorah (http://locomalito.com/juegos_hydorah.php)

There's also a "2-disc CD soundtrack and remix album" in the works.

I'd like to limit the post to more recent games/music projects (this year, at least). :)

I'd be happy to pop by and provide updates on aforementioned Jeriaska Project (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jeriaska/videogame-music-in-context-dvd-interview-series) and Hydorah Arrange soundtrack.

Josh Whelchel (http://www.jwmusic.org/)'s works, specifically the epic The Spirit Engine 2 OST (http://music.jwmusic.org/album/the-spirit-engine-2-complete-original-soundtrack) and GunGirl 2's rocking soundtrack (http://music.jwmusic.org/album/gungirl-2-original-soundtrack)!

Less recently your own game's soundtrack, Aquaria of course :)

Hydorah (http://locomalito.com/juegos_hydorah.php)

Woah, that's cool! I hope some of the songs will be a bit longer for it, because as great as Hydorah's tracks are, they're all a bit short.

I'm on that  :gentleman:

Super Meat Boy Soundtrack (http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-soundtrack)

I'm on that too!  :gentleman:

(totally biased and ego stuff) Don't know how relevant it is since it's not a release but I wrote a post at OxeyeGames.com about the main theme of Cobalt: http://www.oxeyegames.com/cobalt-music-main-theme-of-cobal/ I also released the Kaleidoscope Original Soundtrack but that was REALLY early this year: http://ocremix.org/album/17/kaleidoscope-original-soundtrack

Other recent stuff to write about is:
•C418's collaboration with deadmau5 — http://soundcloud.com/fuckmylife/minecraft-03-c418-and-mau5 , http://soundcloud.com/fuckmylife/minecraft-02-test
•OTHER awesome dannyB soundtracks (some new, some changed to pay-what-you-want) — http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/
•Josh Whelchel has soundtracks up on bandcamp — http://music.jwmusic.org/
•Disasterpeace has soundtracks up on bandcamp — http://disasterpeace.bandcamp.com/
•HyperDuck Music has soundtracks up on bandcamp — http://hyperduckmusicstudios.bandcamp.com/
•the IGF audio jury announcement

and.. uhh... can't come up with more right now but there are some.

Wasn't VVVVVV released this year?

I thought the music was damn catchy.

VVVVVV's a good choice.

I adored Uin's soundtrack. I pull up youtube playthrough videos of Uin at work and leave them running in the background just so I can listen to the music. Seriously.

Also, dunno if this counts because the music is not original but rather is a selection of vintage electronic music, but Space Funeral. I was replaying that today and wound up spending awhile trying to look up the featured artists.

Yeah, I bought PPPPPP just cuz I liked Souleye's stuff so much.  I can't think of any other indie games this year with such good music.

Gee I guess we're coming up on the end of the decade aren't we?

I fourth(?) VVVVVV. Hero Core also had a pretty nice soundtrack.

I liked the soundtracks of Aquaria, World of Goo, and La-Mulana as well, though those were not released this year.

Oh, definitely Hero Core. I forgot that was this year.

The tunes in AAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaAAAAA!: A Reckless Disregard for Gravity are pretty good too. And this is a totally unbiased opinion.

Muh pal Brother Android has made some pretty sweet tunes.

I honestly am not a Phologiston fan, but his tracks for Super Crate Box are pretty boss.

As mcc noted, Space Funeral has the best soundtrack, ever. (the hyperbole is only slight here)

this also helps me plot out future "Play This Thing Loud" posts, so thanks doods.

#3 is missing, it was a song from aquaria, but warner music (???) took it down

Problem with Space Funeral: Music is both not original (apart from the battle themes?) and unlicensed.

True, I was thinking it should have gotten an honorable mention simply for it's quality.

Yeah, I'm sure Souleye would definite appreciate it you mentioned his soundtrack to VVVVVV (http://souleye.se/) :)

I'm trying to think of other indie game soundtracks I really liked this year... Hero Core (http://www.remar.se/daniel/herocore.php) and Super Meat Boy (http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-soundtrack), definitely.

(As for games this year that just had great music; first to come to mind are Phenomenon 32 (http://www.jonas-kyratzes.net/games/phenomenon-32/), Digital: A Love Story (http://www.scoutshonour.com/digital/), Uin (http://www.gamemakergames.com/archive/uin), Fractal (http://www.playfractal.com/), and Space Funeral (http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/rpg/space-funeral/3492/).)

IMO it deserves an honorable mention simply for making me aware of Ruth White :)

There is a clear consensus among obscure Sunsoft characters as to the worthiness of Space Funeral's soundtrack.

Well, don't know if it would fits...

I recently composed a soundtrack for a game that is out now: Invaders: Corruption (http://invaders.manuelvandyck.com/)
I will release a downloadable version of the soundtrack soon, for free since the game is free.
A streaming version is already up here: http://carlocastellano.cc/invaders-corruption/ (now updated with downloadable version)

Thank-you Derek, I appreciate you mentioning the PvZ Soundtrack ^_^  And for those who haven't seen Jeriaska's Videogame music project yet, it's really interesting.

For other ideas I could suggest Brother Android's music in Digital: A Love Story (http://www.scoutshonour.com/digital/) (it's very special music, I don't know how to describe it but it's really warm and ambient and cool), or any of HyperDuck's (http://www.hyperduck.co.uk/) latest stuff (Dust, Katakijin, etc. are all fantastic).

oh, and this is tooting my own composers' horns (which is doubly biased since one of the composers of immortal defense was my father, walter eres), but i probably should mention that the immortal defense soundtrack has been free for download for several years now, and has had some success on 'pause' music

quote from http://gamemusic4all.com/wordpress/tag/phlogiston/

Quote
Has their been any runaway hit albums on your site? Any album or artist that has done surprisingly well?

R: Actually one of our PLUS releases, the music from “Immortal Defense”, is far and away the most downloaded album on the site. We count over 7,000. The Pause compilation “Heartcode” is second at almost 3,000. Among regular artist releases, Animal Style’s Gameboy Madrigals and iqtu’s Embarrassing Triangle seem to be the two most popular releases. Naturally over time our viewership has increased to somewhere between 100 to 300 unique visitors a day, so the more recent releases are getting more downloads than the earlier stuff.

soundtrack is here: http://studioeres.com/immortal/soundtrack

but you mentioned wanting only recent games, so you should probably skip this one; i include this info just in case anyone here wants to try listening to the music

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I'll put up the post tonight, so if there's anything else, slip it to me! I'll link this thread in the post, too.

WTF?! FUCK WARNER MUSIC

Phlogiston! He's one of my favorites.

He did the music for Super Crate Box (http://www.iimusic.net/plus/2010/10/phlogiston-super-crate-box) and a bunch of other soundtracks (http://www.iimusic.net/plus/2009/10/game-music-1).

I Was In The War is one of my all time favorite tracks.

Both of these are from 2009 but I'd say they definitely deserve a mention. First one is the Shatter (http://sidhe.bandcamp.com/) soundtrack, which is awesome. The second is a bit more obscure one (and sadly pretty hard to get since you have to order a physical copy from Paletweb (http://www.paletweb.com/selectpage.asp?code=80001715)), but in any case, Koumajou Densetsu - Scarlet Symphony aka Touhouvania's soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA8eojywTFE) is pretty amazing.
