Title: Dungeon Fighter Online
Post by: shipwreck on January 19, 2011, 11:02:07 AM
http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net

Curious to see if any of you good people play this game. It's a [mostly] free MuMORPuGer, though not in the traditional sense. It's like putting the old Capcom D&D beat-em-ups into an MMO shell: you pick your character (customizable in appearance only through the store), walk into instanced "dungeons", fight, level up, get new moves and equipment, etc.

It's very cool and has sucked me in a great deal since it combines the MMO formula (a guilty pleasure) with classic 2D beat-em-up action.

My main character (priest) is called 'Woses' on the Cain server.

This looks kinda fun, but two questions:

1. How grindy is it?
2. Do you need to buy the freemium content to be "good" at the game or is it mainly optional?

AFAIK the store content is strictly cosmetic. I believe there are coins you have to buy to keep playing if you die X number of times, but I've gotten more than enough of those in game.

In terms of grind, it depends on your definition: if playing through Final Fight or Streets of Rage felt like a grind, then yes. Otherwise it's just a lot of action that goes very quickly if you're in a group.

I meant something else by "grind":
How fast do you level up and are your stats and equipment more important than your playing skill? If the answer is yes, do you have to replay the same levels a lot to get good drops and EXP?

Cuz that's kinda what kills most MMOs for me, that time investment is more important than actual skill.

Blast, they don't like europeans.

In that case, I can't play it anyway.  :(

I'd still appreciate an answer though so I know whether I'll have something to look forward to when/if it reaches Europe.

If you like DFO, you might also like Lunia (http://lunia.ijji.com/) or Dragonica (http://dragonica.iahgames.com/site/default.aspx). Lunia is sort of top-down, but has similar gameplay. Dragonica is sidescrolling, but 3D.

The store content does add significant character bonuses.  I haven't played in about a year, but back then it was pretty grindy.  But it's a beat 'em up, so at least for me that made the grindiness fun.

I don't know, it's the specific 2D Beat'em up look that intrigued me about this one so Lunia or Dragonica don't look too interesting to me. Especially since Dragonica is from IAHGames and those guys... ugh, make up for some of the worst gaming experiences I've had.

Cuz that's kinda what kills most MMOs for me, that time investment is more important than actual skill.

The progression moves along quite smoothly, insofar as I have played it. I'm only level 17 but the first few dungeon hubs seemed to go by at an appropriate pace; I did have to replay different dungeons at different difficulty levels but it never felt "forced".

Equipment doesn't seem to be so much of an issue either; I've just used whatever the game has thrown at me by way of quest rewards and such. Skill definitely plays a role. I went into a higher level dungeon with a friend and I think I fared very well, considering my level and skills. I died several times but, in short we won.

In terms of PVP, I can't imagine a tricked out level 40 character beating a significantly more skilled level 40 with lesser gear, if that's what you're asking.

But, going back to PVE, the bad guys hit hard. So you could be God's gift to level 10 Gunners but you still won't make it through a level 20 dungeon.

Ah, OK sounds like decent fun. I'll remember to try it when it hits Europe.  :)

do you have to constantly replay levels just so you can play the level after? because i tried grand chase and that was REALLY annoying.
