i just assume when posting that people who WANT to read my post don't care too much about picking off grammar and vitrol or whatever other words ya can come up with. i don't care too much about perception or appealing to anyone, it's about getting the message across from point a to point b.

you'll notice modern-western games moved away from nintendo-like(i'll refer to it as this from now on) design, such as pattern-based ai, the expectations of difficulty curves, lives, bosses, etc. there's an expectation from gamers who are used to nintendo-like games. this is where i explained to paul about halo reach's finale:
the ending is basically noble6 on a turret shooting down incoming ships and then *insert art-game-like sequence spoiler here*. it's anti climatic. wheres the Big Bad Boss at the end? you expect the big bang, there is none.
there is no such thing as a boss in halo.

but it's very important to people who grew up with nintendo-like games, it's almost a golden rule of design. someone mentioned in the design forum on tigforums, asked about ai in platformers, where are they? why are they all goombas or koopas?

I dunno, I tend to like pattern-based AI in games more than dynamic AI. Dynamic AI often makes enemies feel samey because they all use the same algorithm or whatever. And it's not like they're really any less predictable because of it.

The thing I love about pattern-based AI is once you get good at the game taking down the bosses becomes kind like a rhythm game. It always puts me in some sort of Zen-like trance where I am gaming on muscle memory. I wake up nearly every morning playing through 'Punch Out!' and it preps my reflexes for a day of ass kicking.

A lot of modern games using dynamic AI don't really feel like a battle against a smart enemy (as is often claimed), they feel more like battles of attrition against a sugar-loaded ADD kid who can take one hell of a beating. Either that or they are easy as hell.

btw the only good dynamic ai in a video game is still halo and only halo

I'll admit it's been a while since I last played the game (only Shadow of Chernobyl, the others didn't interest me for some reason), but I remember that there was a real sense of "group dynamics" in the enemy AI, as well as different behavior for different types of enemies. For instance, the dogs attack in packs and retreat if you kill the pack leader. You have to figure out who the leader is by observing their behavior IIRC.

Or you can just blast 'em all to oblivion which is what I mostly did.

Fear had pretty good dynamic AI too.

Pattern is as bad as AI (which is just a fancy random pop up "wow unpredictability).

Design is what transform a pattern/ai into an interesting challenge. Especially when those pattern/ai are sensible to initial condition and made them hard to repeat (and abstractly it's not different that peggle).

But the reason AI doesn't work for me in those modern days is that most enemy these day tend to be human or human like, it's not like there is 10 000 thousand way to be human or to react as a human.

Halo did a good job here but it's mostly smoke and mirror (they talk it helps a lot, and a lot of silly ambiant animation, graphically the level composition is sublime, but gameplay wise it's a well done illusion because there isn't much), and level in 3D perspective (first or second) tend to be less complex that in other format. I was disappoint when I realize that most modern shooter (sorry bout that but ...) where mostly flat and linear. No more secret passage, no more resource management (a lot less).

But I'm not sold on old design either, I thought Shield recharging was genius and avoid the sillyness of impossible spike of difficulty because you had only 1 "heart" left. But at the same times this now stagnate into something not much interesting either, it break the game into a series of mini games not related to each other. Mechanics like recharging (gears of war) are the kind of innovation that improve the gameplay. I admit the lancer is also pretty good as a relief, only to be perfected by the nkife in modern warfare which is a real strike of genius (split second decision and adrenaline pumper, completely balance shooting vs close combat, this latter use to be very silly in shooter without a shootgun).

Another thing I thought were cool in halo, (but they could have push it further) is that you have limited slot for weapon, it force you to toss current weapon, this create dynamic chokepoint for opportunity (also the drop when you die), Old game use to favor the one who know themap and where the pick up his, now it's more adaptation over memorization (but the pick up slot are still there, they should find a way to "randomize" this a bit more in a natural way).

According to this (http://aigamedev.com/open/reviews/fear-ai/) it wasn't scripted too much (or at least I assume that since the tips on that page include "Don’t Let Level Designers Script the Gameplay" and "Employ Procedural Logic").

That article on Halo's AI was very interesting, by the way.

To be fair, though, while Phubans made some less-than-stellar comments in that topic he wasn't the only one and he wasn't even the first one. There was some shit said by others that was fairly on par with what he said and I am not seeing anyone pointing any fingers at them.

EDIT: And for the record I copied what was said in that topic to EVA shortly after it was made (I am not sure who else has been doing so since or who might have done so around the same time, it sounds like I wasn't the only one).
