Title: Things so mundane you don't even realize you do them.
Post by: J. R. Hill on February 14, 2011, 04:14:38 AM
Give me ideas.

Examples:
Swallowing your own spit.
Putting on socks in the morning.

This is possibly for a game.

Throwing my bag over my shoulder instead of just putting it on.
Tossing my clothes in the air to turn them back when they're inside-out.
Tapping the top of soda cans before I open them.
Consciously avoiding ice cream sticking to the roof of my mouth because it causes terrible pains after a few seconds.

Making noise. If there is a clicky pen in my hand, or something to drum my fingers on, or ... (the list goes on for a long time) Sometimes I drive people nuts with that and don't even realize that I'm doing it.

I do a lot of nigh autonomous things I consider mundane, but a lot of people don't seem to agree.  Therefore, I can't really judge.

Apparently the fact that I bark when I hiccup and meow when I yawn is odd, at least according to #tigirc.  I never really thought about it until my friends started copying me.  :-\

I constantly check that my bag is closed/my pins have not fallen off my bag/nothing has fallen out of my pockets, without even thinking.
Usually when I brush past people or I end up running for a bus/etc while carrying my stuff.

Saved me from losing things a few times, so I don't mind the redundancy.

Interfacing with a computer. Sometimes I forget that there's a mouse in my right hand and a keyboard under my left and it clicks in my mind, "Why is the computer screen doing what I want it to? .. Oh, that's right, I'm pressing the buttons, that's why."

Checking my fly at least once after leaving a restroom in 30 second intervals. Don't ask; I have no idea.

Whenever I click on a link, I instantly click somewhere blank on the page so the little border around the link disappears.
Also, sometimes I subconsciously highlight text on a page as I read it. If I accidentally go to another page while that text is highlighted, I go back and unhighlight it before continuing.
...Something is terribly wrong with me. :-\

A miserable little pile of secrets!
catchphrases. the borrowed with of others. staggering repetition devoid of meaning, effort. a scaffold erected with the intent of building a laugh, by unskilled craftsmen whose arthritic hands balk at the task and whose brains slosh in their cavernous skulls blissfully ignorant.

why do people do this. why do people put text on pictures? they presume the format is funny, perhaps. they're wrong. is the content funny? assuredly not. from sea to shining sea of faceless, thoughtless robots, parroting each other like a boring hal script. this is the internet, and it is you.

Editing my posts. I edit the vast majority of my posts soon after I post them (soon enough so that it doesn't display it as having been edited), usually for wording that I find awkward when reading over my posts.

Edit: And yes, I edited this post too, and not just to add this sentence. Actually, this is my second time editing this post.

That was so much cooler in win2k and earlier where sometimes the selection box would glitch out and get stuck and you could make abstract art out of non-refreshing boxes.

Ah yes, I remember doing that! I still create rectangles on my desktop and on pretty much anything else that has area selection like that all the time. Usually I draw rectangles around significant parts of the screen (for example, my desktop icons or the Windows logo in the center of the default Windows 7 desktop). When reading some things, especially dense blocks of text, I highlight whatever part I happen to be reading or have just read.

I also repeatedly press the right and down arrow keys, as well as the End key, when editing text like in this box where I'm typing this post, ensuring that the cursor is really past the last character.

When saving a Word document I usually press Ctrl+S way more than I need to, like 4 or 5 times instead of just once.

I am very much guilty of this, but instead I try to make squares with pixel perfect equal sides.

Also, I really like to fill my recycle bin with hundreds of GB worth of trash, and slowly watch it disappear whenever I feel like emptying it.

This is my first time learning about about Shift+Del (if I had learned it before, I had completely forgotten about it). It'll probably save me time since I almost always empty the recycle bin on my desktop (stuff collects in there more often on my netbook because I don't have it displayed on the desktop).

I barely move my arms when I walk. Like, at all. I see the motion in every walk cycle tutorial, I've heard it said that almost everyone swings their arms from side to side while walking, and that it's natural to do so and it helps balance. But I don't. Not a conscious decision. I just don't move my arms while walking. I didn't even realize I didn't until I took a theater class back in middle school, and the teacher made us mimic the walking habits of others. If I make a specific effort I can fake it, but once I lose concentration it's back to ol' Noyb stiff arms.

On occasion when I'm walking, to stretch my legs, my training in the ministry of silly walks kicks in. I have since hammered it down to a science and I start walking about like I'm destroying Tokyo as Micheal Jackson in Thriller. I had to be told this, otherwise I'd never know that I hate Tokyo on a subconscious level.

I see the motion in every walk cycle tutorial, I've heard it said that almost everyone swings their arms from side to side while walking, and that it's natural to do so and it helps balance.

I heard once that this is a vestigial trait from walking on four legs.  The arms swing about how they would if they were meant to touch the ground.  Don't know if it's true.

One sorta semi-conscious thing I find myself doing is making scotch tape loops.  If there's a tape dispenser nearby, I'll pull off a short length, curl it into a sticky loop, roll it across things with my fingers, and typically end up folding it up in strange ways.  I guess it's just a way to satisfy a need to be fidgety.

Whenever I drink Asahi I end up peeling the label off the bottle, before I realise I'm doing it. But only with Asahi, no other beers.

Pulling a mustache. Said in humor of the previous "Pick a nose" statement.
I don't know why, but I never realize I'm doing it until I hear a "POP!" sound from my mouth.
