It's called 13 assassins and it's some epic samurai shit. I haven't seen it yet but I have heard good things. I thought only five or so people knew about it, haha. Oh shit, I totally forgot El Topo there. Goddamn, I hate making these lists. >:(is this because of Suda51? I can't speak for everyone obviously, but I discovered El Topo because I'm a Spaghetti Western nerd and it's sometimes included in that genre even though the label doesn't really fit. 3-Iron Romeo + Juliet (fuck you, Baz Luhrmann is awesome) In the Mood For Love Howl's Moving Castle Empire Strikes Back The Fall Paper Moon It Happened One Night Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus Honorable mentions: Cleo from 5 to 7, Princess and the Warrior, Shaun of the Dead, Let the Right One in (the sublime Swedish original, obviously), Kontroll, The Beat that My Heart Skipped, Blade Runner Korean cinema has been kicking some SERIOUS ass the past decade or so, go watch anything by Chan-Wook Park or Ki Duk Kim or Jee-woon Kim. Amazing stuff all around. Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: Nava on April 02, 2011, 05:43:34 PM you should watch the movie Fallen Angels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112913/). it isn't Korean, but it has a really similar taste in terms of style and direction. Ahaaaa, no way!! I lovelovelovelovelove Kar Wai Wong! I haven't seen this one though, I will certainly check it out, thanks :) His "In the Mood For Love" is in my top ten there, one of the most melancholy-wonderful films of all-time. Seems like we have a similar taste in films. I meant to include Paprika in my hon. mentions. Satoshi Kon was the man and will be sadly missed :( Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: cystem glitch on April 02, 2011, 07:51:26 PM watched Videodrome last night. I liked it, but it ended kind of abruptly. Now that you have been exposed to the signal you will have to wait for the tumors to finish developing before you truly appreciate the film. After they start inducing hallucinations you won't see them as a flaw, but the potential for new organs. Long live the new flesh! Lady Vengeance (far more mature and impacting than Oldboy, IMO) This. For the longest time every hipster kid who you asked what his favorite movies were would respond "Donnie Darko and Oldboy". Both are decent, but watch more movies hipster kids. Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: Nava on April 02, 2011, 11:08:37 PM I really like Oldboy; it's psychologically quite stunning and unique, extremely well shot, and challenging to a "Blockbuster" audience.
I felt like Lady Vengeance (the 3rd and final in Park's revenge trilogy) was, maybe intentionally, the one in which the concept was TRULY understood. It was.....maybe unsurprisingly given the title.... more feminine: at once softer and more brutal than either of the previous two. It had serious emotional depth, less rawness. I feel like he did this consciously, both in terms of the connected trilogy (moving from naive exploration to more somber, mature consideration) and in terms of gender. Maybe I'm overthinking it though. Either way, it's an incredible film. I also loooooved Park's "I'm a Cyborg but That's OK". It's probably the lightest of any of his work, practically a romantic comedy if you can believe it, but still manages to maintain that fucked up, dark quality. I never saw Donnie Darko and never really had any interest in it :\ Guess I'm a bad hipster. Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: FK in the Coffee on April 02, 2011, 11:14:13 PM Pan's Labyrinth

1) MIND GAME In my opinion the greatest movie ever, certainly the greatest animated movie. Anime Fantasia turned up to 11. The message is simple, and is summed up multiple times throughout the movie with the phrase, "Your life is the result of your own decisions." It's the way the message is conveyed that makes this movie amazing. I can't think of anyone who's seen this movie who didn't cry at the ending. Not even because it was sad, but because it encompasses life so well, and the infinite possibilities it holds. I also can't think of anyone who hasn't had an excitement stroke at the climax, which features the main characters RUNNING OUT OF A WHALE. The majority of the movie takes place inside a whale by the way. Watch this movie as soon as possible, you won't regret it. TRAILER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU4EfF85u60 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU4EfF85u60) The rest of these are in no specific order, and you might notice I have a bias for animated movies. 2) YELLOW SUBMARINE Hopefully I don't need to introduce this one that much. Beatles songs and wonderful psychedelic designs, it's hard to miss with this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyAPTvNMN-w&feature=fvst (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyAPTvNMN-w&feature=fvst) 3) THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE Beautiful, mostly silent French cartoon which has a lot of fun and style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fwM4hnsdSA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fwM4hnsdSA) 4) THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER: RECOBBLED CUT The ultimate unfinished movie, in production for 30 years, then snatched away at the last second and turned into a shitty Disney movie. This version uses lost clips, pencil animations, and sometimes storyboards to turn this movie back into what it was originally supposed to be. The result is astounding. You won't find higher quality animation in any other movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK9Xo9RlFaE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK9Xo9RlFaE) 5) PRINCESS MONONOKE I could have put any Miyazaki film on here and it would have fit perfectly. But this one is just closest to my heart, with its demon boars and creepy as shit forest spirit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyX89c3nSHw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyX89c3nSHw) 6) CORALINE There just isn't a better stop-motion movie anywhere. Some scenes are just unbelievable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO3n67BQvh0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO3n67BQvh0) And I'm going to stop there for now. Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: Gabriel Verdon on April 29, 2011, 05:21:12 PM Phil Fish was raving about it a while back, but your review makes me really want to see it, for real.
Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: Jesse on April 29, 2011, 06:54:32 PM Oooooo awesome thread. I'm always looking for awesome movies. Will definitely be watching some of these soon.
Here goes for my own list: The Eclipse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqTO48onuC8) One of my favorites in recent years. I recommend you DON'T watch the trailer for this. Set in Ireland, a publicist who's lost his wife is in charge of a novelist's book tour. She writes about ghosts. That is all. Synecdoche, New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2q8F0yRmrs&feature=fvst) Probably the best movie ever made. I don't know what to say about it. Just go watch. It may take two or three views to understand (it certainly did for me), but please do it. Gomorrah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHpf_Xv5hYk) My favorite "mob" movie ever. Kills The Godfather and Goodfellas. Following several different stories about crime and murder in Naples. Also one of the most beautiful movies I've seen. Sorry about the low-qual trailer. The "official" one sucked. Tetsuo: The Iron Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blvfbhkaidE) Less a movie and more an audio/visual experiment, Tetsuo has some of the most amazing effects and stop-motion photography and greatest use of a soundtrack I've ever seen. It won't be for everyone, as it's loud and extremely difficult to watch, but if you can get into it, incredibly rewarding. A Boy and His Dog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu9fESAlGc4) A bizarre movie about an apocalyptic future with a great first half and a really weird second. What saves this movie from being mediocre is the amazing relationship between the boy and the dog, and please, PLEASE, if you watch it, stick around until the end. It has probably my favorite ending ever. You'll be happy you did. A Prophet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_XmxCHpyX4&feature=fvst) This French prison movie is about starting out as an absolute nothing criminal and working your way up. Done incredibly well at every turn, with some of my favorite fight/actions scenes, just in absolute realism. Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twuScTcDP_Q) I hope that you've seen this already. If not, go forth. Pusher 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH_ZdNmRB6E) My favorite of the Pusher series, and actually the first I watched. Completely watchable by itself, without having seen the other two. A story about crime, but more than anything a superb, amazingly acted character study. Humpday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMr_LQDlYH8) A silly film that's part comedy, part improv sketch, part corny hipster drama. The premise is absurd, but the "acting" is great, and another example of a brilliant ending really making the film. Revanche (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJwGep3MIO0) A German film about revenge (as the name implies) and its all its implications, and how we deal with them in our lives. These are current top 10s. Most of these I've watched in the last year. All amazing, and most still on Netflix streaming! Title: Re: top 10 movies Post by: Inane on April 30, 2011, 12:48:45 PM The Lost Room (made for TV movie I know.) I thought it was brilliant and horrifying, a visual and audio spectacle. Amazing industrial soundtrack too.
