Title: Let's talk about shoes.
Post by: Tanner on April 05, 2011, 07:28:37 PM
What are your favorites?
I basically could go through a year with two kinds of shoes. I would wear Clarks Desert Boots during the fall through mid-spring. From mid-spring to the beginning of fall I would wear Sperry Top-Siders.

Those are my thoughts.  :waaagh:<(THESE ARE THE BEST SHOES!)

Macbeth.

I bought some Macbeths and they hurt my achilles tendon something fierce.  I either have to buy shoes that have some sort of dip behind the tendon (like many skate shoes) or high tops that don't end near the tendon.  Globes and Vans tend to have a lot of cushioning around there too.

I don't know anything at all about shoes really. Right now I mostly wear a pair of Sketchers like these:

They're pretty comfy, hold a 3 mile walk decently well, and look semi-professional (but then I work in a CS research lab so who really cares).

I'm thinking about getting a pair of Northface Hedgehog:

I like the way they look, and apparently are SUPER comfortable for extended walking (which I like to do more and more since Spring/Summer is coming).

That's usually what I try to go for, but I only own one pair of shoes at a time (I'm a man, after all) and they're usually Sketches because they're pretty whatever. The ones I have now are more like walking/running sneakers (kinda like the second pic you posted) but they're black Sketchers.

The thing that sucks is I have exceptionally wide feet. At the widest part, they're 4.5 inches across. It really sucks when buying shoes because even the ones marked "wide" are never wide enough and they end up hurting my feet. Eventually my feet win the battle and start busting out at the sides. If you look at my current pair of shoes, you'll notice what look like bullet holes on the outside where my pinky toe eventually broke through the stitch  :wtf:

I wear sandals whenever the snow is below my ankles or the water below my toes. Otherwise I wear sneakers
I've been meaning to make duct-tape-waterproofed cardboard boots, but haven't had the time or duct-tape.

I have a pair of vietnam combat boots for winter, which came in handy when we had 2 feet of snow :)
My main pair of shoes are Adidas Sambas with purple stripes like this:

The tongue keeps sliding to the left after I've walked for a little bit, it annoys me.

I want a pair of shoe with every gimmick available. Air pump on the tongue, lights in the heels, pop-out wheels, soaps...

Also I'm too old for any of that.

I've used like, two pairs of skate shoes over the last 10 years or so, summer through winter, rain through drought. Persistent things. Not the exact model pictured below, though.

The property about skate shoes is that you tie the laces once, then slip 'em on and off with unparalleled ease.

This thread has really got me thinking... I'd like to experiment with fashion, but I really try to avoid wearing anything that could label me as a punk, goth, hipster, skater, etc... I think some high boots with straps would be cool, but that would be too evocative of a goth or something... I was thinking of Vampire Hunter D or some elegant badass... Though I'm not some tall, thin, Paul-Eres-esque character, so I probably couldn't pull that off.

I'm thinking I would be better suited to boots that were bulky... Matte brown... With multiple straps and studs coming out of them, but nothing overdoing it... Just something hefty that would be comfortable for my feet but also look good on someone as bulky as me. Of course, such a piece of footwear would have to be custom made, no doubt... Maybe someday when I have lots of money I can do that...  :handmoneyL: :wizard: :handmoneyR:

I hate shoes. I walk around barefoot as much as I can. I'm also somewhat fond of sandals because they're the closest you get to wearing no footwear while still wearing footwear.

Big-ass snow boots in the winter (I took a nasty spill on some ice a couple of years ago, spraining my ankle so severely that I had to take a month off work; it's never quite been the same since, so I'm extra careful about weather-appropriate footwear). Black trainers in the autumn. Bright green Gola suede sneaks in the summer and spring.

Merrell. GREAT climbing/hiking/running/multi-surface shoes with soles by Vibram.

Speaking of Vibram, I really want to try Fivefingers but I really don't want to pay for them and find out I hate them.

I bought a pair of five finger KSO treks a while ago.  I used them for running in the mountains and they worked really well while they lasted.  They have great grip and my overall foot strength went up significantly after training in them for a few months.  They got torn up really quickly though; the material came unglued from the rubber and the rubber started cracking.  But I didn't exactly use them for the intended application though.

As far as normal running goes, they seemed to make me slower.  I prefer racing flats.

I don't really see the point in wearing them for non-training purposes.  They don't really have cushion and your feet get sweaty.  I think I've only seen one person wearing them casually who didn't look weird, and it was a very attractive girl.  I think they're in vogue now because people think they look hardcore for wearing them.

@Gilbert & Gabriel: Great to see some fellow barefoot aficionados here.  ;)

My family has a house in the country and whenever I'm there, I love taking barefoot walks in the nearby forest. It's amazing how much it increases your awareness of your surroundings, because you have to be careful where you're stepping and are forced to move much slower than with shoes on. A really interesting experience.

I wear moccassin pretty regularly, since I work in an office and need to look professional. I don't begrudge any who wouldn't want to wear them, though.

I found a pair of Birkenstock sandals at a clearance sale once and bought them not knowing what they were. My god they were the best sandals I ever owned. I wore them down until the sole was worn completely through. I now only buy Birkenstocks for my sandals because they are fantastic.

Thankfully I live in a tropical clime and can get away with sandals for 80% of the year.

I wear these a lot of the time. They're casual enough not to be too dressy, and vice-versa. Unfortunately, they've also been discontinued.

I usually wear a leather, manly shoe with a steel toe, though I have some pansy dressier shoes I wear on occasion. These shoes sometimes walk me to the 10km to work and back, suitable for a Canadian winter. A quick wipe down and polish cleans the mud off from a recreational hike or other activity, and lets me look the part for work as well.

They are also comfortable.

I only have a pair of KSO Treks. They're my second pair(the first being regular KSOs - about 1.5 years in total of Vibram-wearing) and are so worn that I really should replace them, but I need some monies first. For about six months or so, I would walk two hours a day in them.

I wear them because they're an excellent shoe for people wanting a barefoot experience if they're too lazy/too uncomfortable/unable to go barefoot, which roughly describes me. Most of the year no socks are necessary which is a nice bonus. I don't care for the looks, but I love the feel. I might try other styles of light/simple shoe in the future - before Vibrams I went through a moccasin slipper phase, but they wore too quickly.

That's easy, just balance it off with something else. Along with my skate shoes I wear an old red army military jacket. I highly doubt anyone thinks "oh he's a skater" ;D (old photo)

The thing about Vans - and a lot of other skate shoes, in fact - is that they're fucking comfy, and you can find very reasonably-priced pairs that last an age. Who gives a shit about the opinion of anyone who'll write you off as some subculture twat on the basis of your footwear?

Edit: other than teenagers. I mean, I wouldn't've been caught dead in anything Adidas as a 15-year-old, but then I a) grew up, b) discovered that Run DMC fucking rules and c) shortly thereafter bought the most comfortable and long-lasting pair of trainers I've ever owned, and which I'd probably still be wearing if I hadn't left them on a train.

I had an amazing pair of Vans once. Super comfy. I loved those things. Mavericks, as I recall. Then they got discontinued, and I went through like three more pairs of Vans of various styles trying to find something comparable. All of them were terrible, cheap, stiff, and hurt my feet.

So now I wear Skechers pretty much exclusively because they've yet to disappoint me like Vans did.

I always wear some slick black shoes, no laces, from some department store; probably Target or something. I only own one pair... I should probably buy a new one, too, as my current ones are torn to shreds and falling apart.

I don't care about shoes, much like how I don't care how my underwear looks. I don't look at people's shoes, and I don't find them too interesting. So... yes.
