Title: Vexed Hedgehogs Post by: shushgame on April 11, 2011, 10:21:43 PM The Experimental Gameplay Project theme for March/April was "Cheap Clones" and, having spent an unhealthy amount of time playing Angry Birds lately, and having seen my kids playing an absolute clone via Moshi Monsters I thought I would make a cheap version of Angry Birds that also acted a little as a commentary on a few things that niggle me (not so much about games per se, but about the commercial practices that surround the kind of games you get posted to your Facebook news feed). So far so good. I got a physics extension to GM that did the complicated work for me, and spent a week (as per EGP rules) dressing it and sorting out some basic impossible level design.

After 7 days it was quite narcissistic and inwardly focused, with little regard for the pleasure of the play experience for anyone else. It was the nastiest of clones. After a few weeks during which I had a chunk of leave time with nothing else occupying me, it has morphed into something that I think might actually be a fun game. No more impossible level design, much more attention to the pleasures of playing. So I would be grateful to see what people think about a game that might now be more of a mash up of as many game references as I could cram in than a direct clone. There are bits of Angry Birds, Worms, Peggle, Tetris, Space Invaders and Bloons in here, peppered with a large amount of the Mushroom Kingdom. When I finally got past it, I found the reminding levels of world 1 much easier. Maybe there should be some better balancing of difficulty.
Allowing more length to how far the slingshot can be pulled back would give the player more refined control over the angle of the shot. |
