Title: Nice electronic music
Post by: tesselode on April 19, 2011, 07:59:51 PM
There's some electronic music out there that is actually musically good. However, if you just go on YouTube or Google (or the radio, for that matter) and look for electronic music, you'll get 64 measures of drumbeat. So, I think it would be nice if people shared any good electronic music they know of.

Proceed.

several more. i got tired of writing descriptions after the first few.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxiWjl9GPhM
highly recommend his new album "returnal"--excellent analogy ambient music, and easily my favorite of 2010.

Caribou - Tits & Ass The Great Canadian Weekend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_YIqdB7H2g
from "start breaking my heart", my favorite album of his. his newer work is more folky but still good.

Minilogue - In the Shade of the Sun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDICDiHipyc
so much atmosphere. from cd2 of "animals", an underrated ambient phenomenon!

Proem - Little_A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORLS6MNVy4w
this is from the live "liveMD[cd?]", which i like more than most of his recorded stuff.

Savath + Savalas - Paths in Soft Focus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg3lHWEw8iY
side project of prefuse 73. this track is off the "rolls and waves" ep.

Mogwai - The Sun Smells Too Loud (James Holden Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G09z6J-WUkA
one from the dance camp for good measure.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Sound in a Dark Room http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHSlceVlMq0
Amon Tobin - Deo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av25IbK0f-M
Murcof - Maiz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9DBeVN-CS4
Herrmann & Kleine - Leaving You Behind (Without Knowing Where to Go) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR2tKN6wkxM

bonus round:
Four Tet - Sun Drums and Soil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZXcn-RgbF4
Squarepusher - Port Rhombus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWNgcVq-GMQ
Alva Noto - Xerrox Monophaser 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_kx6Yxomy0
LSG - El Tiburon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmRqzX-rZ3A
Triosk - Not to Hurt You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovyCX5Df3eo
continuous mix i made of some cool electronic and post rock: http://rep.undev.org/mushic/mixes/Max%20Crane%20-%20my%20home%20by%20the%20ocean.mp3

This place has some great electronic music that, unfortunately, no one has heard of. Stuff like new wave, dark ambient, etc. I really dig the Data 3, John Costello, and Quantom 1+3 albums they got there.

Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht is an amazing ambient album, got me into doing ambience too.

Liaisons Dangereuses is a great pre-industrial band as well.

Malaria and Yaz (or Yazoo) are great hidden treasures of new wave bands. Well Yaz isn't really that hidden, but still, they're good. Check out their song Chinese Detective. Good stuff.

I don't know many current electronic guys but I like some of the, "old school" people  :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: from fifties/sixties/seventies so heres some of that? I really like the strange tones and occasional goofiness.

Raymond Scott's Manhattan Research Inc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy77ioKI4lQ&feature=related) stuff is incredible and his Soothing Sounds For Baby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRuJ82CnEGI) albums are also good and have excellent cover art.

it's me i'm the baby in dat pic

Mort Garson too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4nbfPZa9Ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4nbfPZa9Ws) this one is really good imaginary vidcon music but whats this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0j-8h9Jf0U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0j-8h9Jf0U) BLACK MASS LUCIFER tumbling through an eldritch bramble..!

I only found out about the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre guys recently but this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEShy2QIj4U&feature=related) is excellent so they are probably worth checking out..!

Basil Kirchin's "Worlds WIthin Worlds" albums. I've only heard one but it's phenomenal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeZ-r_JSeaQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeZ-r_JSeaQ)

Perrey & Kingsley oh god im so sorry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y73Qe0aSgg)

BBC Radiophonic etc but especially the soundtrack for Doctor Who ep "The Sea Devils" which is insane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3c7GT63SxU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3c7GT63SxU)

there's a really good compilation album called OHM Early Electronic Music or something which is a lil more hibrow heh / more based around avantgarde composer dudes like Olivier Messiaen and such but it's still a good listen if you like this stuff.

Also some of this stuff is being toted as an influence for newer electronic guys like Belbury Poly and Moon Wiring Club ut I don't know them that much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlxbcmMqP7I&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlxbcmMqP7I&feature=related) ahahaha hell yeah

So I interpreted the question as being for electronic music that is "musical" in nature.

In which case I'm amazed, how has no one mentioned Boards of Canada (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7bKe_Zgk4o) yet? I mean not even I'm offended, just usually they're the second thing mentioned in a music recommendations thread :)

I think I also might suggest Arovane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux7JDJLXFeQ) and BT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGtTRVhMNEQ).

I think the people who told you to listen to Squarepusher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o2EPOzW2KQ) and Four Tet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZXKkj0n3us) are giving you excellent advice.

Overall though I'm not sure how much use I can be because the electronic music I listen to tends to be not-nice sludgy cement mixer noises (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDVEOXR4rIc) ^_^ However if you'd like to take a risk I always want to recommend Autechre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coPcRW1Xm2g) to people.

EDIT: Oh! Amon Tobin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2ARyXwoJa0).

Sometimes I like to listen to some I am Robot and Proud (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ-PWsRmQAI&feature=related) (this one is 401 Circuit). His music can get a bit too repetitious, but its cheerfulness can make up for it.

Since I am Robot and Proud has already been mentioned, I should offer another suggestion. William Fields (http://www.williamfields.com/) is one of my all-time favorites, and he has been sharing his music online for free for over a decade. He has experimented in a variety of styles of rhythmic electronic music and some no-rhythmic styles. Asoka (http://www.williamfields.com/#asoka) is my favorite, Branches (http://www.williamfields.com/#branches) is a good cross-sampling of his music, and Timbre (http://www.williamfields.com/#timbre) was his first ambient album.

Has anyone mentioned Fennesz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLKzqKdF9Zc) yet? If not, for shame. The guy is from my hometown. He's virtually unknown here in Austria though but apparently fairly popular (among listeners of "alternative" music at least) in the US and UK. Weird.

Anyway, here's some more:
Harmonia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLKzqKdF9Zc)
Tangerine Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqWwbMdMrhQ)
Taylor Deupree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc_uKx8NTa4)

Ben Frost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43YG2bsEQtM)

Or if you're feeling adventurous:

EDIT: BTW Fennesz is great and anyone who finds they like Fennesz, I would also recommend Jan Jelinek.

If I understood it correctly, this thread is about electronic music, then I can post this:
Jungle/DnB (though not really the typical):
London Elektricity feat. Robert Owens - Different Drum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aJaFdjJYXA)
LTJ Bukem - Horizons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d9Zg1sAhls)
Hatiras - Spaced Invader (J Majik Remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUMUXm3-5IA)
DJ Marky ft. XRS - It's The Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coucda_Fy-4)

Trance:
David West - Make U Mine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaNLfntkrsI)
C-Quence - Endorphine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkWDdXgYZ2E)
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnRmwhaoDU8)
Solid Globe - Sahara (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6zWi7a64WM)
Kyau & Albert - Kiksu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsSPRUhIaek)

House:
Cosmos - Take Me With You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGuZM0HZyN4)
Daft Punk - Derezzed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4cgLL8JaVI)
Eric Prydz - Pjanoo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llfNRGQ7Tlg)
Swedish House Mafia - One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkQ5rEJaTmk)

Electro:
I-F - Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsdwLBYekK4)

If not however, then you should name it just 'Ambient, lounge, chillout and similar' and not confuse people.

Lollard - Sail to Heaven (http://www.archive.org/details/Lollard) at the Internet Archive is some good, droning ambient music. I would also like to recommend The Stars of the Lid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EtQ6m6WIpc&feature=BFa&list=AVGxdCwVVULXfFwV_LXd6GySHvHsWRsQSc&index=8) for some good drone.

I haven't seen their name anywhere in the thread, so here's a selection:
Modeselektor - Hasir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHCJvhOtviU)
Modeselektor ft. Thom Yorke - The White Flash  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-b9hgd-3Tc)
Modeselektor - Let Your Love Grow  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBtBmpTCKHs) (don't let the beginning fool you)

They also teamed up with Apparat to create Moderat:
Moderat - A New Error  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w0JSVGh3E0&feature=related)
Moderat - Rusty Nails (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoxUiqUpkw4)

And be sure to check out Moritz von Oswald Trio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8-MNbX9G8I) too, if you haven't already.

It's a band led by one of the Basic Channel guys. Other members include Sasu Ripatti (aka Vladislav Delay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx5Acxd-KIQ)) and Max Loderbauer (of Sun Electric (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIrHwIOstTI) fame) The music is sort of a mix between dub techno, ambient, krautrock and early jazz fusion, all improvised live. Some real trippy shit.

Great:

White noise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__-lpvXfI6E) - an electric storm

On the cover of this album they noted that some sounds where never heard by people before and they didn't knew what the effect would be on humans. I don't know how serious they where with it, but it's definitely one of the first groups using samplers to deform sounds and create new sounds with it and one of the first to use the first British Synthesizer: the EMS Synthi VCS3.

edit: C.A. Sinclair is totally right. They used tape players and tape manipulation.

Well, one of the first in popular music. Also samplers didn't exist back then.

Science of the Sea (http://digitalisrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/science-of-the-sea) by Jürgen Müller is lovely, analogue ambient music from 1982 that express feelings the musician had as a student studying the sea.

I've been thinking of getting one of those MIDI pickup things for my guitar for electronic music making. I prefer recording things "live" to sequencing them but I can't play keyboards, so all the standard keyboard-based MIDI controllers are pretty useless to me.

I was tempted to do that also, I'm not a great pianist by any means and I only have a cheap 2 octave MIDI keyboard. I'd love a MIDI guitar but I'm just too poor, I was tempted to sell my Kaoss pad and my nanokorgs to get one.

Thanks for reminding me of his music. It's some good ear nectar.
