Title: Lots of Tanks
Post by: bateleur on April 19, 2011, 10:46:54 PM
No plot. No shopping. Just tanks.

This is the game dontkickpenguins and I developed at TIGJam UK4. Hat tip to increpare, whose random theme generator gave me "." (yes, just a single dot) which became the bullet from the game's default gun!

Features include:

* Competitive and cooperative 2P, 1 keyboard modes.
* Wide variety of genuinely different and interesting weapons.
* Definable controls.
* Arcade, Survival and Time Attack modes.

The two-player, one keyboard mode is ending up a little underpublicised since Flash sites aren't really geared to that genre. If you get the chance, try it. If you like it, tell everyone! :gentleman:

PS. According to my online stats tracking, nobody has yet managed to complete the (fairly tough) 1P Arcade mode - post here if you manage! :tiger:

Added a screenshot. Everyone likes screenshots, right?

(Oh, and there's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6bbXcR0wc0) too!)

I don't like the physics, but power-ups are great.
It can get kinda boring in a few minutes tho.

Me too. It's doesn't feel like a tank...but the weapons are cool. And need some music too.

The sound is really sparse and would be helped if...

...it were used(along with visual effects) to give more indications of what the AI is thinking. There's only one tank type as far as I've played and it has a very mistake-punishing kind of behavior. Most of my deaths are: I fire, I miss, they close in and kill before my cooldown. It needs more telegraphing, and it should be mixed up with simpler kinds of enemies.

The level design is missing. The barriers, enemies and powerups could be arranged so as to produce new dynamics(risk vs. reward, optimal weapon types etc.).

The color palette is not contrasting enough, making the tanks hard to read against the background.

I find myself wishing the tanks would bounce on contact so that I could sort of "bounce around corners."

Interesting comment. In fact there are ten different enemy tank types, so possibly they need to be more different from one another. Different weapons have different cooldown times. If you're being killed during cooldown a lot you should try holding fire until you're a bit more confident of hitting when you have a slow weapon.

The level design is missing. The barriers, enemies and powerups could be arranged so as to produce new dynamics(risk vs. reward, optimal weapon types etc.).

This is a good idea. The project was much too small to allow for this kind of thing, though. (Likewise prettier graphics, etc.)

I find myself wishing the tanks would bounce on contact so that I could sort of "bounce around corners."

That might be quite fun... although given some of the comments we got about the tank handling on Kongregate, bouncing tanks might cause some of the commenters to explode from outrage!
