Title: UpBot Goes Up (Flash Version)
Post by: bateleur on April 23, 2011, 03:06:04 AM
Way back at TIGJam UK2 LeFishy, Ishi and I made a game called UpBot Goes Up. It's about this robot called UpBot and I don't want to spoiler you too much by saying what he gets up to.

What I will say is that it's a shockingly good puzzle game. It's possible you will make a face like this: :o

(There's a video trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqID7gJlz0s) too, but it contains spoilers for the early levels.)

Play for free on Kongregate: UpBot Goes Up (http://www.kongregate.com/games/bateleur/upbot-goes-up)

This is really cool!

I know this was a game jam game but fyi, at one point I hit "reload" and it seemed to trigger several strange bugs. I was confused about how to get back to the main menu, by the time I had the audio went away somehow and I couldn't get it to come back. Eventually after reloading a few more times and toggling the "mute" button on and off a bunch it eventually came back. Also when you're playing through the level select screen the levels do not auto-progress.

Yup, there was a bug which had that effect. Was fixed yesterday, so should be OK now.

Not returning you to the main menu is potentially confusing on a desktop system, since the game was designed for mobile. Possibly I should bind "Escape" to that functionality?

Also when you're playing through the level select screen the levels do not auto-progress.

That was a deliberate decision - although possibly a bad one. The intention is that if you want progression you should be using "Play".

The problem with using play is that it sent me to a level which I'd completed previously from the level select screen, rather than the first uncompleted level.

I'd also appreciate keyboard bindings for undo and reset.

Other than those small issues, yay UpBot!

I can see why that might not be what you want, but I'm not sure that auto-jumping to the first uncompleted level is better there? It basically depends what players are using level select for. If players use level select to skip levels then can't do then having play dump them back there repeatedly is going to be annoying.

I'd also appreciate keyboard bindings for undo and reset.

Ah, yeah, I should bind reset to "R", good idea. (Edit: Done!)

(Undo is already on "U".)

Thanks! :gentleman:

Your game destroyed my productivity at work this morning..

Given the number of people who've said something similar, I'm expecting to see a measurable dip on the NASDAQ soon as the markets adjust to the fact that half the tech staff in the Western world have been playing UBGU instead of working!
