Title: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: jwk5 on May 11, 2011, 07:06:15 AM I've heard over and over that a good thing to do is focus on getting three meaningful tasks done in a day (Google it) rather than running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to do everything (and then usually getting overwhelmed and getting nothing done at all). I've been practicing this lately and it definitely makes life a little easier and has helped me prioritize in spite of the chaos that is generally my life. It doesn't mean three things are all you can do, it means three things are all you obligate yourself to do and take top priority in the day. So anyways, in the spirit of the 'Human Hugs' thread, "Something you JUST did thread", goal accountability, etc. I present to you...
(http://i53.tinypic.com/10sabls.jpg) Here's how it works: Everyone posts 3 things they intend to accomplish with their day and then... they do them. 8) It seems that most of us frequent these forums in and out of the day so make it a point to view your post here each time you 'visit' the forums today. Let your post be a reminder that today you are kicking ass and taking names! Today you are getting shit done! Encourage others here to get shit done and be encouraged yourself. That is the goal here. Make sure you declare your goals here in an over-dramatic movie bad-ass way! Declaring them while walking away from an explosion earns you extra style points. Also, make sure at the end of the day (i.e your day) post what you've accomplished. Now take the day and fucking own it Chuck Norris style! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I declare that for the day I shall lay the smack down on the following endeavors: (1) I will finally get around to deep cleaning my house, like a boss. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NisCkxU544c) Real men don't live in filth, they create it. Status: Owned it. (2) I will set up the framework for my Etrian Odyssey ripof... ...er I mean Etrian Odyssey inspired game I am making in GM8.1 and its sheer awesomeness will melt your fucking eyeballs and set your hair on fire. Status: Half-Owned it. (3) I will do my crossfit excercises, weight lifting, and strike training until my limbs turn to jelly and my lungs exhaust lightning bolts. I do not procrastinate from exercise, exercise procrastinates from me. Status: Owned it. Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: Supermini_man on May 11, 2011, 07:25:17 AM Great idea. :)
(1)- Will get a playable build of my WIP game to request music from a musician. (2)- Will do a complete revision of 8th grade Math. (3)- Will get some bureaucracy done. Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 11, 2011, 08:32:02 AM i don't think people in 8th grade should be concerned about productivity or wasting time. that's the time to have fun and do whatever you want.
anyway, i already do this (not '3' in specific, though). i don't really need to frame it dramatically for it to work because it's a habit to decide what i'm going to do in a day and then do what i decided. but may as well see what limited it to the number 3 specifically will do. - import the 'fifish' sprite into SD, and animate its parts - do the same for the 'giant hippo' sprite - do the same for the 'opinicus' sprite will post screenshots of what they look like after they're done, later today Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: Supermini_man on May 11, 2011, 08:34:32 AM I'm not on the 8th grade, I just need to remind some math knowledge I forgot for a mid term I'm going to have this month.

That was actually said for humor's sake, Paul. You know, to lighten the mood and try to add a fun spin on things? That's okay though, you can own your day in the subtle and subdued ways of the 'Master Ninja'. Sip some tea and kick some pixel ass, Paul! Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: --- on May 11, 2011, 09:09:29 AM Good idea. :) Glad you caught me in the morning, time to do this.
-Make a mockup of my game's intended interface -Make HUD graphics, including healthbar and weapon information -Finish creating the HUD within my game. Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: Gimym JIMBERT on May 11, 2011, 09:16:00 AM 1. Solve upside down gimbal lock

Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 11, 2011, 09:50:35 AM also are we going to do this every day or just today (e.g. will this thread end after today or will this be an ongoing thing)
if the latter i move that we rename this thread 'the days of ownage' Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: --- on May 11, 2011, 09:59:45 AM Or 'Lifetime of Ownage'. I hope this goes on for a while, it's actually fairly motivational.
Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: Nugsy on May 11, 2011, 10:01:36 AM 1. Solve upside down gimbal lock I believe you can solve gimbal lock by using quarternions. Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 11, 2011, 10:07:19 AM no it's a special kind of gimbal lock called the gilbert lock (see his thread about it)
Title: Re: A Day of Ownage!!! Post by: jwk5 on May 11, 2011, 10:14:38 AM Hopefully this will be an ongoing thing (i.e. every day). I know that at least for myself I will try to keep it going.

Kyle Pittman on May 11, 2011, 07:08:27 PM It's too late for me to post about things I intend to do today, so instead, here's the three things I did yesterday and today.
Yesterday: 1. Implement generic audio, video, and mouse configuration menus. 2. Allow patches to be flagged as "chokepoints" that must be patched to before future patches can be applied. 3. Allow localized strings to be specified in any packed content file. Today: 1. Spend all day trying not to move my arm because I got a shot yesterday and my shoulder is sore. 2. Be in a bad mood all day. 3. Drink a beer. Cough. :-\ Yesterday was somewhat more productive than today was. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: ortoslon on May 11, 2011, 08:27:39 PM i don't feel responsible to you. anyway:

1. Fix the order in which fonts are drawn. 2. Add a console command to allow patching to be temporarily disabled. 3. Write up a list of all console commands. 4. Modify my controls system to allow for non-bindable controls. 5. Generalize menu input using my controls system. 6. Add a patch notes text file. 7. Ensure my patcher supports filenames with spaces. 8. Look up this word that's been on the tip of my tongue all morning...means something like "trivia," "miscellanea," or "lore." Another goal...... Hm. I guess I could organize my notes, and finalize the design document. Recap:
My biggest, most ambitious goal is obviously the design document. All i've covered is potential interface, and barely covered controls. Thankfully I've got a bit of down time away from the computer. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 12, 2011, 10:19:58 AM i think it's a bit too ambitious to finish a design document in one day if it's only 15% done. my design documents take me months to complete (but then again, they're often more than 100 pages long).
also i did finish my 3 tasks yesterday, but i didn't get a chance to make a screenshot. i'll make one soon and list my tasks for today. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: DeadPixel on May 12, 2011, 11:02:24 AM Make sure that making a screenshot is one of the tasks, then it's sure to be done!
Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 12, 2011, 11:19:36 AM that'd make it 4 things instead of 3 tho
Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: --- on May 12, 2011, 11:26:51 AM I try not to make my design documents huge. The largest I've ever done was about 15 pages, and that was over-ambitious and not that organized. Often times I don't make official 'design documents', just a few notes over the course of many pages. If I want to be neat, I'll make a design document.
Maybe it's reflective of how I am; my workspace looks like a pigsty to the average onlooker, but I know where everything is. If someone were to clean it, it would take me hours to find stuff. Ahh well. I'm about 45% into it, but to be fair I did have lunch and watch TV. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: Cow on May 12, 2011, 11:34:26 AM Cow, I do that stuff everyday... and so do you. That is just not true, you're a damn liar. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 12, 2011, 06:57:33 PM okay so it turns out i animated one of the 3 creatures from yesterday badly, so i spent today fixing up that creature's animations and making it better again. i didn't get to set 3 tasks for today because i waited too long before i set them (now it's 11pm). but anyway here's the screenshot
http://i.imgur.com/pk35A.jpg i didn't draw them (my artist komera did) but she just drew the individual parts individually (e.g. the legs, wings, tail, etc. are all separate image files) so it's up to me to put them together and make them rotate and move with the creature as it moves, which took a long time, particularly for the biggest creature there (which has 20 separate parts). anyway my 3 tasks for tomorrow will be: finish coding the behavior of those three creatures (now that they're animated i need to make them do stuff other than just move around) Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: J. Kyle Pittman on May 12, 2011, 08:35:41 PM I have EIGHT tasks for today: 3. Write up a list of all console commands. Seven of eight's not bad. I can write up a list of console commands any day. Also I fixed like three other bugs I didn't even intend to fix, so yay. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: jwk5 on May 12, 2011, 09:19:49 PM The creatures look awesome, Paul!
Well, I completed two of my goals yesterday but underestimated one of them (but I completed as much of it as I realistically could in the day). So today (it's 10pm but this is technically my 'morning') my new goals are: (1) More crossfit, weightlifting, and strike training. I must hone my ninja skills. The specific goal: at least 60 minutes of total workout for today. Status: In queue. (2) Set the dungeon crawler aside until tomorrow (to give myself time for ideas to percolate) and resume work on Maidens of the Hunt (with the specific goal being to create no less than a dozen digital concept roughs). Status: In queue. (3) Create either at least 1 canvas painting or 2 pencil drawings. Too much digital is not a good thing for me. Time to go into Bob Ross mode! Status: In queue. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: --- on May 12, 2011, 09:30:02 PM It's just about bed time for me now, I'm going to set my goals for tomorrow.
-Finalize design document (Copy from physical paper to MS Word and save as a PDF file.) -Begin my Sprite-A-Day practice to get better at making sprites. -Set up external resource loading.. Right now I'm packing all the graphics/sounds into the game maker file, but I plan to release this project as open source. So I will be externally loading so resources are easily accessible. Title: Re: Days of Ownage: Kicking Ass for Life Post by: ஒழுக்கின்மை on May 13, 2011, 07:57:14 PM finished 1.5 of the 3 tasks for today. my first failure happened too soon! tomorrow's 3 tasks are
