Hmm. As impressive at it is, I couldn't help but think "oh, right, it's another FPS" the moment the action began. All that impressive backstory and scenery, and it's still just about shooting guys. Still looking forward to it, though!

Nice link.

Is that sarcastic or could you really not figure out the link to gametrailers.com?

EDIT: Oh, you deleted your post. :)

some indie platformer that took 20 years to make, a one man team made it, nobody will buy it
Indie Shooting Game (EVERYONE WILL BUY THIS)
Call of Duty: Black Warfare 1.1 (It fixes a bug)
Dall of Cuty: Not a Copy of Call of Duty (ORIGINAL GAME IDEA DO NOT STEAL)

I'm sorry but if a game takes 20 years and is indie, it doesn't make it good.

As for the topic, I'm looking forward to the game :)

Anyone else think that chick looks very anime?  She has very simple hair, she's colored very brightly, huge eyes, and gigantic goddamn tits.  I also feel like she's the product of a focus group that was designed to find how to create a female character that the player would be attached to.  She just oozes Disney and anime.

Also, everything is a scripted event.  EVERYTHING.  I've noticed that they often put you in situations where it seems like you're about to fight a big group of enemies, they all disperse or are taken out by some contrivance.  It seems like everything we've seen is the MC moving from Half Life 2 talking to fighting one guy at a time.

In the end, I really wish this wasn't a video game.  It has a lot of really interesting ideas and set pieces, but it just looks like a really, really shitty game.  It looks like they took everything that people didn't like about Bioshock and made THAT into a game.

I hope it is good

I expect it will not be

It will likely still be worth playing for the atmosphere and style.

I'll buy it for under ten dollars a year after release like every Bioshock game.  I'll play it once and think that it was a pretty good movie and a pretty shitty game.  I'll argue with some idiot about the philosophic implications the game brings up or some such nonsense.  I'll sneer when someone on Kotaku asks if this game is racist.

Anime don't have big eyes monopoly, it's a common illustrative tactics to emphasis emotion and psychology, it's more like american style really, just look at pixar, or look here where multiple female artist contribute: http://drawthisdress.tumblr.com/ it's closer to that than anime seriously.

Regarding color they came directly to emphasis the thematics and relate to that:

It's call art direction ie making a statement (using propaganda poster tropes and color). Equating anything with "bright" color to anime is a bit silly.

It also happen that most art in history where not about brown as realism (only when time worn things up), heck reality itself have bright color everywhere unless you live under a rock!

I hope gamer will wake up their head out of their ass for graphism some days...

Honestly though, this is just a stupid over-the-top in-engine cinematic pretty much, I feel sorry for whoever had to make it. The only thing that really interested me at all was the gargoyle thing at the end and the pretty shotgun.

That player character (whoever he is) sure has really tough arms. The forces sustained from those falls must be enormous.

Her look disturbs me in a way no anime has managed to, it's that creepy. I think it just stands out uncannily from the other people in the game.

Also, the lighting is driving me nuts. It just glows so much it's ridiculous, and it ends up being even more jarring than Elizabeth. My first reaction upon seeing the first screenshots of Bioshock Infinite was "zomg so much bloom" and that still holds true for me.

I liked Bioshock (despite never finishing it due to my obsession with killing every splicer with only pistol headshots while the game wouldn't let me adjust my sensitivity nearly as low as I wanted it), but this hasn't interested me nearly as much. The gameplay looks mildly interesting, but if the released footage is representative of the game as a whole it's so heavily scripted you really don't have to (or get to) do that much on your own. I'm not a fan of player characters that talk without you actually choosing to talk, either.

Gimmy you seem off your mark today. Nobody mentioned color scheme at all?
AshfordPride wrote "she's colored very brightly," among other things.

Anime don't have big eyes monopoly,

They are cornering the market on moe, and Elizabeth seems to be trying her hardest to be pretty moe.  I feel that every line she has to stifle an 'onii-chan'.  This is just so far flung from Bioshock, I could never imagine seeing something like Elizabeth in a Bioshock game.

Okay, let me put this in a completely unobjectionable way instead.  She's Alyx Vance.

The market was already cornered by "bitch" in video games, so far elizabeth is the relative minority, and having abusing boyfriend relationship (songbird) is far from moe, it's more like a trope you will see in independent american comics. I think you watch too much anime :/

Protecting her from that is pretty moe.

Also, I'm currently trying to read everything that Doug TenNapel has written, so I think I'm pretty well versed on the relationship between guy with magical powers and girl with different magical powers in American comics.

And I fucking love hate anime.

I'll play it once and think that it was a pretty good movie and a pretty shitty game.

I kinda agree with this, though I don't think the original was a shitty game -- it's just that the game parts kinda took away from everything else that was going on in the game. I which we would get a Bioshock exploration/adventure game instead of an FPS. I want the gameplay to focus on exploring these amazing environments, not have them be the background/setting for explosions and headshots.

I was really looking forward to the Bioshock movie when Gore Verbinski was attached to direct. Pity that didn't work out...

I'm not interested in playing any of the Bioshock games, but the art is quite nice!

I loved the nice touches in the game, at least I hope they're going to be in the game, like where he says "I'll be right back!" before jumping onto the skyrail thing. It just makes it seem like you, the player are making the story happen. Everything flows nicely and feels real.

The shooting is definitely going to ruin this game.

I can tell from the smug look on his face and from having "sucked it down" quite a bit in my time. ;)

But y'know, I like John Romero. No, really. Sure he's made a lot of missteps and it's easy to make fun of him but I'll always remember him for his amazing work on Wolf3D, Doom and Quake.

Title: Re: E3 Bioshock Infinite gameplay footage on GameTrailers.com
Post by: Derek on July 09, 2011, 03:12:25 AM
I don't know him personally, but I get the feeling that people have often mistaken his enthusiasm for arrogance. From what I've read about Romero, he seems to enjoy talking about games with pretty much anybody and has a great memory for all the games he's played and worked on. Really passionate guy. I'm not sure why people took that "bitch" advertisement so seriously... even if it wasn't his idea it seems like it was all in good fun.

Also, he's referred to himself as "one of the original indie developers" before, and I think that's great, because the environment that he developed Keen, Wolf, Doom, and Quake in is very much in the "indie spirit" (not to mention all of the games he created by himself pre-id and Softdisk). It was a very loosely organized, very fast-paced, very personal style of development. I'm not surprised he's moved back to that style after Daikatana, because it seems to suit his personality.

I'm hoping he goes back to making hardcore games, but with a small team instead of working for a big company.

I can't really understand why anybody would dislike him. All the interviews I've seen with him, he seems like a nice down-to-earth guy that just likes making games. I've never seen him behave in a way that I'd even consider as arrogance. Maybe I've just managed to steer clear of the stuff that has soured some people on him?

Title: Re: E3 Bioshock Infinite gameplay footage on GameTrailers.com
Post by: dEnamed on July 09, 2011, 04:34:43 AM
It's got to do with the way they were rolling during Daikatana. Big luxurious offices, driving expensive cars and having Ad-Campaigns that literaly said "he's about to make you his bitch". The story (http://www.gamespot.com/features/btg-daikatana/index.html) behind it is pretty interesting, you might want to read up on it.
The whole "bitch" ad campaign became a sour apple when the game turned out to be rather mediocre. I don't really think people took it seriously, but with a statement this bold and a game that could not deliver on that promise, it quickly became the prime angle for the attack and backlash.

On terms of Bioshock: Infinity:
My oh dear, is that one heavily scripted scene. But I gotta say, I love the artstyle. The woman did give me an anime vibe too, not that much the look but mostly by the way she acts during combat. She's got those super powers but needs the constant protection of the emotionally stable tough guy while she's off being helpless, cowering in a corner. Everything about that scene spelt "look at me, I'm helpless, I need big male protection". Outside of combat however, she seemed interesting enough.

/edit:
And yes, I'm aware that her helplessness might just be another artstyle thing, having to do with the whole Uncle Sam in that trailer vibe.

Title: Re: E3 Bioshock Infinite gameplay footage on GameTrailers.com
Post by: Christian Knudsen on July 09, 2011, 05:35:01 AM
I also suspect it has more to do with the disappointment that Daikatana turned out to be. Fans have a tendency to turn around in a split second and rail against their former idol if they feel they've been let down.

Back on topic: Yeah, it really is heavily scripted. I wonder how that's going to play out when not controlled by a player that's actually trying to show off all the scripted events and waiting patiently for them to wrap up? Stuff like that can quickly go from being immersive to absolutely breaking the illusion if the timing is off...

I think Derek made a good point when he said that she's reminiscent of someone from a Pixar movie. But the thing is that none of the other characters I've seen so far have reminded me of Pixar (or anime), and that's what bothers me about her look. Granted, she, being a major character and all, needs to stand out, but to me it just looks uncanny right now. It's like putting one of the Disney princesses in the middle of an action scene out of the Transformers movies, though not to that great of an extent.

The people in the other BS:I trailers look kind of cartoony as well, just not as much as she does. Bulbous noses, exaggerated features, chunky limbs.

Saltonstall looks like he's straight out of a political cartoon

Although I see they're carrying on their wonderful tradition of melee-wielding running animations for enemies that make them look like synchronized psychos

NO
I mean saturated compared to movies (the commercial was during a show about newest cinema releases, that's why I thought it was a pixar)
When seen just after real movies it looks cartoony and the characters look funny
