Title: Dead Island
Post by: phubans on July 14, 2011, 08:53:23 PM
Holy shit, how did I not know about this until now?

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/dead-island/video/6299756?hd=1

I don't know what the gameplay is like, but wow... What an awesome trailer. Sure, the zombie action genre is pretty overdone, but dammit, if the rest of the game is as good as this trailer, I'm in. I'm hoping it will be like the game version of Zombi 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOqouYVyt0E).

I hope it's as good as Isle of the Dead.

It's not as good as the trailer unfortunately.
They were all "This is a co-op survival game! You have to find food and drink to survive!"

Then they made it into another generic FPS.

Yes that.

That being said that trailer is pretty genius. Shame the gameplay looks like a worse version of Far Cry. From what I've seen of the game though there's some neat cinematic bits that kind of remind me of the trailer though.

If Dead Island combined

Zombi 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOqouYVyt0E).

with

Isle of the Dead.

I might actually be interested in it.

Ah, well that's too bad... I was hoping for a survival horror game with a sandbox world, vehicles, and so on...

When I was 18 I wanted to make a game called Rural Terror that would be just that... It was the first game I actually wrote up a legit design doc for. And at the time (1999) there were no other games that had all the features I wanted to have in it, which were:

- First person shooter game with some puzzle solving and survival mechanics

- An open sandbox world spanning about 10(?) square miles (about the size of a Fallout 3/NV world), set near a small town in rural Western Pennsylvania (where I grew up)

- Featuring day and night, as well as weather effects (fog, rain, etc)

- In addition to on-foot travel, you could get around in vehicles such as cars, trucks, and 4-wheelers

- Vehicles require fuel, you require food, and weapons require ammo

- Chainsaws, pistols, shotguns, and fire-based weapons would be the standard fare

- You see in the dark with flashlights that would require batteries (as  you can see, everything requires micro-management)

- Cars would have radio stations like in GTA, playing a mix of 90s alternative rock, classical music, maybe some old-school country. Selected song titles included: Type O Negative - Summer Breeze, pretty much anything by the Misfits, Ramones, etc.

- In addition to zombies, mutants, and giant animals, the game would feature other creatures from urban legends such as Big Foot, Moth Man, the Werewolf, and the Forest Hag as bosses

- A simple plot of coming back to your hometown, noticing your relative is missing, searching for them... unravels into a journey of pure terror that eventually ends with UFOs and government experiments

Pretty much Fallout 3 ended up doing everything I wanted to do with this game (with the exception of vehicles and the setting) but who knows... Maybe I'll make it someday, even though the industry has long been over-saturated with horror FPS games (yet I never seem to get bored of them)... I think for a game like this to be done properly, it would need to be a AAA studio production, or a mod that I spend years of my life working on with a small team.

Anyways, sorry to get off topic, I just had to get that off my chest.

The trailer for Dead Island was really creative and unique, but for some reason it didn't make me want to play the game at all. Meh.

World War II is no longer Contemporary, besides, im glad the era where every war sim would start where pearl harbor was the first mission, acting like the war only went on for two years and other 80% didn't count is gone.

Yeah, zombies are old hat. Games about monsters are the way to go.

Zombies are just popular because they're an easy way out, creatively. No explanation of mechanics necessary because of how ingrained in pop culture they are, no moral concerns, no need to explain where they're coming from or why. They're zombies. Everyone understands zombies.

Now, other classic monsters. Frankensteins and mummies are both higher-tier sorts of enemies, so they won't fit in hordes. Vampires could have pseudo-vampire servants, making them about as legitimate as zombies, but they've reached saturation due to Twilight. I predict zombies will go the same way around the same time the World War Z movie comes out.

It's obvious where things will go next. Rodents. The next big thing will be rodents.

Wait and see.

I remember how excited people were for this game before we saw any gameplay.  Holy shit man, it's the realistic zombie survival game we've all been waiting for!  And then we see that the HUD is a mess, everything you do has XP tied to it and it tells you this constantly, and it overall looks kind of crappy.

Sounds cool.  I had a similar idea a few years ago, except third-person, a coastal setting, and multiple playable characters (when one dies, they're gone forever).  Also, murderous hillbillies. Never wrote a design doc though.

he looks a bit like robert webb.
seriously though, as much fun as that looks like it would be to make, I don't like that pcgamer should be in the business of making pr videos for a game.
