Title: How many horrible games did you have to make before you made a good one?
Post by: tesselode on July 29, 2011, 05:27:05 PM
I have at least 10 horrible games in my portfolio. They're bad partially because of a lack of programming skills, effort, and thought, and partially because I was too young to realize they were horrible. I hope I'm not the only one who released a bunch of terrible games before I finally made one I'm proud of.

I made one bad game, and then 2 good games, and then another bad game, and then another good game.  By good, I mean people liked them.  Ive never been satisfied with the quality of any of them

i'd say about 2, that depends on what you mean by good. my third game was actually pretty good, and still one of my favorite things that i've finished and released. although it wasn't really played by many people, i definitely put the most effort into it out of all of my games, and it shows.

i dunno, all my games are horrible to me and great to me in different ways

i also don't know whether i should count finished games or unfinished games

but as a rough thing, i made about 5 unfinished games before i made a game i was proud enough to show other people on the internet (it was also unfinished though)

and i made about 20 games (only about 3 of those finished) before i felt confident enough to make a commercial one

I have finished about 5 projects that I didn't release because they were awful.

Ha ha lets post about how people are all obsessing over post count and how noone says anything worthwhile anymore and then post in this thread! Hell, it doesn't even have to be a sentence it can just be a number and it'll be just fine.

So, let's everyone work to make this forum a better place!

Same with me. Two of my games got terrible reviews, and really the first 4 had teething problems. But the next game, The Count of Monte Cristo, will be my masterpiece. :)

Dozens. Luckily for the mental health of everyone, most of them weren't finished or even released. I have to say, though, while there's a lot of crap in the old stuff, there's also some solid ideas to be found there: Every now and then I go through tons of the old stuff I have lying around and end up having fun with something primitive made back in the day. There's especially one thing I'd really like to remake some day as a proper game, but we'll see if I'll ever find time for that.

I made dozens of terrible BASIC games as a kid. Not sure what I'd say my first good game was, though. My first two C++ games were competent enough, but they were both smaller in scope than I wanted them to be since I had to make cuts to meet deadlines, and I've mostly just been doing tiny little compo games since then. I'm hoping to be able to take my time with my next game and make it something really enjoyable.

I have only finished two games. Both were for competitions of one sort or another. The first was an entry for the Zero Punctuation: Stonking Great Game contest. I learned a lot from that title, but it couldn't really be called a "good" game. I wouldn't have quite labeled it "horrible" but it was leaning in that direction.

I made another game for the Global Game Jam earlier this year. It was a fairly basic Canabalt clone. It also wasn't "horrible" but was far from what could be consider good. I'm still kind of proud of it, partially due to the time constraints we worked under, and largely because I was the only programmer on our team. (programming any game, in those time constraints, by yourself is an accomplishment to be proud of)

There's nothing wrong with cranking out some not-so-good games. It's all part of experimenting, and learning about what makes game development tick. As long as you recognize and learn from your mistakes then everything is happening as it should.

I finished 3 games and they all were horrible, because I copied all nice ideas from other games. (hey, I was a kid!) and now there's many unfinished, horrible projects I wish to never work on, again.

I wish my first, actually polished and well-thought game will be successful... if I'll finish it, that is.

5 or 6 terrible games, within the span of about a year and a half.
