It's start's in just two days. Is anyone else here participating? Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Tumetsu on October 30, 2011, 01:03:48 PM I have given a thought about it but likely I don't get my lazy ass off to actually write anything. Besides, I have games to make :P
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Player Ʒ on October 30, 2011, 01:23:05 PM Participating like no tomorrow!
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Inanimate on October 30, 2011, 02:00:51 PM Definitely signing up this year. No clue what to write about, though.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: James McCloud on October 30, 2011, 02:18:35 PM I should. I have an Idea for something to write, but I think it'd fit mor of a short story. I don't know. I'll probably go with something Science fiction.
Then again... Homework. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Player Ʒ on October 31, 2011, 08:14:42 PM So, it's the first already.

help help help help Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Jared C on October 31, 2011, 08:52:39 PM I might do this shit but I got work/school/babysitting on my plate so it is likely I will fuck up horrendously. There will be no way to bring myself back from the state of torment that my failure will render me.
But yeah we'll see if I have time. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Xion on October 31, 2011, 09:36:45 PM good luck yous guys. I'm sitting this one out.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: ChevyRay on October 31, 2011, 10:41:15 PM For those of you having trouble coming up with ideas, here are some you can use!
NaNoWriMo Story Ideas (http://chevyray.com/2011/10/nanowrimo-story-ideas/) Feel free to use/steal/twist 'em as you please :) or just maybe find some inspiration! I'll be writing down more, I thought up that batch just now. Looking forward to your stories! Quote Hair Day Write a story about a girl who discovers that each of her hairs has a personality and dies when cut/fallen off, and she starts to be able to listen to them all, and has to decide whether to ignore them or try to satisfy their needs. She tries cutting off all the bad ones that scream terrible things into her head, but it just ends up giving her a ridiculous hairdo. A Hard Knock Life If you want to experiment with something a little sexier/tragic, how about one about a person who, every time they masturbate, the person they think about dies, and their coming-of-age as they discover this. Mount-iple Personalities If you want something a bit more fantasy, how about one about a legendary horse who was raised by an emperor. When the empire falls, the horse is passed on from leader, to king, to hero, to warlord, to princess. And as it progress from each, it inherits parts of the personality of all those who rode it. Somebody Stop Me Maybe something that cares a bit less about the 4th wall and is contextually appropriate for NaNoWriMo: a story about a girl who has a vivid imagination, and writes tons of stories that she never publishes or shows anybody, and a friend who meets her and discovers that it’s because, if she *doesn’t* write the stories, the story will incarnate itself. When is then prescribed medication by her doctor, and things start to spiral out of control. Heart of the Pacific A sailor in a shipwreck is stranded alone in the middle of the ocean on a makeshift raft. He meets the Face of the ocean itself, and only the kinds of conversations you could have with a massive body of water follow suit. The two, naturally, fall in love. Tragic/bittersweet ending as the two embrace. Slumber Party Celsuis A 10 year-old’s slumber party turns dark when a game of “the floor is lava” gets serious, and the floor actually does turn to lava. Friendships are strained, trusted ones are betrayed, body parts are burned, and sofa cushions are in high demand. Meta<3Meta A simple prince-meets-princess fairy tale, but with a dark secret. The story’s two narrators are bitter rivals, hate each other’s guts, and will do whatever it takes to twist each chapter’s words to insult the other. They twist the story to their liking, and the poor protagonists have no choice but to follow along. Will the hero and heroine get their fated kiss? And more importantly, how will the real love story here pan out? Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Bood_War on November 01, 2011, 05:42:38 AM I've already decided to take a high-fantasy setting and write a horror story. I'm not sure of any overarching plot or anything yet, though.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: ✌ on November 01, 2011, 06:36:27 AM No way I hate myself.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Bood_War on November 01, 2011, 09:02:17 AM Just broke my first thousand words. Time to cry myself to sleep forever, because I have to do this twice daily every day for the next thirty days.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Pineapple on November 01, 2011, 10:44:58 AM fuuuuck I forgot it starts today
I am completely unprepared. wish me luck. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Smithy on November 01, 2011, 05:11:49 PM I always mean to participate, but then I don't.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Inanimate on November 01, 2011, 08:33:28 PM Debating whether I should just write lots and lots of short stories, or try improvising an entire novel from scratch.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: bento_smile on November 02, 2011, 03:39:41 AM Make a novel which is interlinked short stories maybe? :D
(Oh damn, I am so tempted by this thing for the first time ever, but no time! Argh!) Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Pineapple on November 02, 2011, 05:27:29 AM praise my writing skill which knows no bounds (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10116881/nanowrimo/2011%20fantastic.txt)
almost 1500 words so far. I'm slightly behind. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Player Ʒ on November 02, 2011, 06:17:29 AM Make a novel which is interlinked short stories maybe? :D (Oh damn, I am so tempted by this thing for the first time ever, but no time! Argh!) You could do it in class. As such, outline a little in algebra, write a little in sociology... Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Tanner on November 02, 2011, 07:33:57 AM I always mean to participate, but then I don't. This is the most heart-breaking thing I have ever read. When you dudes are finished, you should put them into e-book format! I could use some new Kindling. How much would it cost to be able to publish a novel electronically? Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Inanimate on November 02, 2011, 09:09:36 PM I've started! My video teacher gave me a great suggestion on how to get an idea, so I'm writing a cyberpunk story, with a lot less emphasis on the "cyber" part.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: ithamore on November 03, 2011, 03:38:32 AM If only there was one little comma after National. I could easily write something novel in a month but not a novel (even if it was a novel novel).
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Pineapple on November 03, 2011, 10:52:37 AM whoo, I've nearly caught up from my deficit of the last couple days
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: dEnamed on November 03, 2011, 01:53:44 PM Having partaken in it a couple of times already (and finishing twice), I'm trying something different this year. Like someone mentioned already, it's the idea of using short but linked stories.
The story outline is: A being of great power has a vision, in 10 centuries from now, the world will face destruction. As a result, he tries to speed up the development of technologies and introduce new and strange concepts to the people. All in the hope of pushing them far enough, that they can ward off the evil in the distant future. So, each short story is basically one of the beings interventions and a couple of years further down the line. There'll be differences in how things work, how people act and react. Ideally, if I can pull it off, I can pour some of my sociological things into it. How culture comes to be, how a collective identity is constructed, how progress changes perception, etc. As the being is more of a demiurge, it will make mistakes too and I hope I can create some convincing social fallout from what seemed like a good idea one or two short stories back. If I can pull it off, it's gonna be my magnum opus. If I can't, it's just another story for the shelf, to be stored for no later use. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: James McCloud on November 03, 2011, 03:02:45 PM Big fat post This reminds me of Isaac Asimov's work with Multivac. Was that an inspiration?Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: im9today on November 03, 2011, 07:22:42 PM FINALLY an excuse to use my new ipad3! i'll be tweeting updates each five minutes
no one wants to read what you write. how about help a homeless person week instead of farting about starbucks month Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Inanimate on November 03, 2011, 07:41:47 PM Now gonna be able to write today, probably. Wrote a really boring essay, and correcting an essay for someone (and way overdoing it), means I am freaking DONE WITH WORDS FOREVER
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: J. Kyle Pittman on November 03, 2011, 11:01:39 PM Started this tonight, I guess. Wrote 4,175 words, so I'm almost caught up (I should be at 5,000 by now). It's all terrible, but I've been wanting to write something for ages, and I finally had an interesting idea for a story just a few weeks ago, so the timing seemed right.
I thought I'd have trouble writing words and not just getting straight to the point immediately, but once I started getting invested in my characters, it just started flowing. I've barely written anything that could be considered "plot" so far, just the barest hints of a premise and a lot of character development. Feels good, man. Even if it's all terrible (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/pirate-hearts/novels/victor-versus-the-uncanny-wrongness). :waaagh: Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: dEnamed on November 04, 2011, 12:06:51 PM Big fat post This reminds me of Isaac Asimov's work with Multivac. Was that an inspiration?Never read that. If it is similiar, I must have caught it someplace else. I'll research it. Thanks for the heads up. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: man of doom on November 04, 2011, 12:52:57 PM Aww man I totally forgot about this. I'm a third of a way through a novel I started in February, but I would really like to get in on this.
I'll see if I can come up with something really absurd that I can manage to write a ton of words about. Edit: It has begun (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/manofdoom/novels/assiblian-vekro-ni-drontas) Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: James McCloud on November 05, 2011, 07:45:52 PM Big fat post This reminds me of Isaac Asimov's work with Multivac. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Hangedman on November 05, 2011, 08:43:51 PM Here's my NaNoWriBro. Took a lot of work, but it was worth it.
http://pastebin.com/9b5Sdxqu (http://pastebin.com/9b5Sdxqu) In all seriousness I'd like to do this someday, but I really prefer quality over quantity and I don't believe output is a good enough measure of writing progress Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Player Ʒ on November 05, 2011, 08:43:57 PM I'm out.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: J. Kyle Pittman on November 05, 2011, 11:05:37 PM Wrote about 5500 words tonight. Beating the average now. No idea where this story is going, but I'm enjoying the adventure. :o

Ah thanks for pointing that out, I was a little unsure myself but now I've checked I shall be a bit more careful :durr: Going to try and get 3000 words done today, to try and catch up a bit with presumably everyone else. Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: J. R. Hill on November 06, 2011, 07:20:41 AM Man I co-authored a book like 3 years ago and I have zero interest in doing anything like that again anytime soon.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Inanimate on November 06, 2011, 12:34:06 PM I haven't had the chance to write at all for a few days, and frankly, I am kinda glad I hadn't. I'm still mulling over what story to write.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Bood_War on November 06, 2011, 12:54:09 PM I've been stuck at ~2500 words. I know what I want to write, but I sit down and I just can't do it. : (
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: Pineapple on November 06, 2011, 01:09:58 PM try listening to music until you snap and start writing again
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo Post by: J. Kyle Pittman on November 09, 2011, 10:58:00 PM Still about a day behind, but I'm up to 13,500 words now. I feel like I'm rushing through the narrative...I could probably have added another 5,000 words already just describing characters and places instead of jumping straight to verbs.
Not even sure where the narrative is going. It's sort of a crazy time travel thing, and I'm just making connections haphazardly between various subplots, hoping it all works out in the end. :wtf: I'm also really starting to appreciate having read Stephen King's On Writing. I'm sure there's a lot of good nuggets of truth I've forgotten from it, but I've retained a few of them, like kill all adverbs and just let your characters do what they want to do. |
