It's been a long haul, but we finished. It doesn't make any sense, but we finished. You can read it and enjoy it, or maybe you won't. Either way, congratulations to everyone who participated for holding out for the long haul.

It keeps happening

Some of you may remember the recent *Exquisite Corpse played out here on our fine forums. If not, you can peruse the goings on here (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=21735.0) at your leisure.

Go on. I’ll wait.


Now then. A new year, a new exquisite corpse! But... what is an exquisite corpse? Put simply, it is an exercise in surrealism. To participate requires little to no writing ability, and so is open to any who wish to sign up. The first person will write a short segment of writing – say, 100 words. He will send it on to the next man in line (and yours truly!), who will, based upon this, write something else, and send that on etc etc and so on. Thus, each member will be provided with the previous writer’s segment of writing. It doesn’t always make a lot of sense, but that is fine. It is, however, a lot of fun!

Now, to prevent the snags that occurred last time, I’m afraid I feel obligated to set down some ground rules:

ALWAYS make sure to send a copy of your writing both to myself AND the next person in line!

DO NOT send the PREVIOUS writer’s work along with your own. This is important!

If you do not send in your writing within 48 hours of receiving the writing, you WILL be skipped. Sorry.

And, well, you don’t have to follow grammar and punctuation if you don’t want to, but I’d APPRECIATE IT.

Forwardrescent seems to be a lvl 1 member with low post freq, generally between a week to two days between posts. Skip him and add to the rules in the next exquisite corpse to not sign up unless in the habit of logging in and checking the fora at least once a day. Elitist, sure, but better than than keep 20 people waiting.

It has now been 48 hours. Forwardresent is hereby skipped.

I read it. Quite interesting. Like last time: nice work and well done!

I wonder, for me it is natural to try to continue the previous author's story and style somewhat and to promote some of his concepts in one's own text so as to allow for gradual change and at least the possibility of a continuance of style and story. But perhaps this isn't obvious? Should it be put explicit in the instructions next time?

The challenge of an Exquisite Corpse is not to just write one's own piece--it is easy to simply throw away what was given and sort of restart the story at one's position--but take what is given, treat it lovingly and incorporate it in one's own interpretation and continuation, and thus contribute to a communal work to which one lends one's flavour and influence.

I tried to do that as best I could.

Well I enjoyed that! It doesn't read too badly, although the old man telling the story obviously gets quite confused!

I think the concepts were repeated, but you don't have space to repeat them in enough detail, without the story seeming seeming pathologically repetitive. One idea for making the story more consistent could be to have a 'master storyteller', whom writes the start and end sections, and every 3 or 4 sections maybe adds a couple of sentences to try to reinforce the theme of the story..

Is it sad that I can pick out the exact points where people misread the previous one?

Who started mimigas? It was in my section and derek's section.

It was in my section too. I didn't even know who that Cave story guy was till I googled him.

If anything, I find these things interesting because it shows what people tend to fixate on. The last one got hooked on cheese, and now this one is about Mimigas. The framing device got thrown out, the rustic theme got lost in translation, but somehow the Mimigas got passed through half the corpse? Strange...

But at least crowe had the foresight to cast the narrator as an old man, so now we could blame all this on Alzheimer's!

Also, I'd be willing to bet that Caruso was the one that Mimigified this one...

How'd you guess, lol? I didn't know where to take it for a little bit but then I saw the narrator was in a cave and decided to run with it.

Well, you weren't too far below me, so I just cut out however much I thought Ashkin wrote and the results spoke for themselves!

I guess, as far as things go, Cave Story fanfic is probably one of the better things that could've happened. If anything, it speaks to the true nature of the community! No matter how hard things get, or how semantical threads become, we will always have :cavestory: as the tie that binds us together.

Since the one before just mentioned Mimigas outright, I felt I had things pretty easy.

I didn't knew the Mimigas reference in Caruso's text (well, now I do).
It's a nice read, though.  :biglaff:

Also, it is funny that people after me picked up Mimigas and Amaya, after I have eliminated them (I just wrote Daisuke). Makes me wonder if people would still bring Mimigas after that.

I think these are really interesting, because you get results that you ordinarily wouldn't if one person sat down to write it.

The way this works just encourages a level of craziness and lack of planning. It's fun to read since it is not what one ordinarily reads.

Also interesting to see how the narrator's voice (dialect? speech quirk? whatever...) got lost somewhere, and how the verb tenses change sometimes.  ;D

I personally love seeing how my entry fits in and how it influences the next person's work.
