I've been working graveyard shifts at gas stations since I was old enough to work. I worked my first night shift over a decade ago. I have been working at an inner-city gas station (I mean REALLY inner-city; there are pubs, clubs and bottle shops down the block) for five years now.

I've seen an absolute shit ton of mayhem over my years working as a graveyard shift worker. Drug disasters, bloody violence, robberies and week long speed bingers, complete with many ambulances and police cars. Even though the job can be a bit chaotic, I love having the time to myself to work on games and listen to death metal.

Last week, a male juvenile (yes, he was black) grabbed about $35 worth of stock and made a run with it across the street. Thinking it was just some punk kid, I chased after him. Shoplifters typically will drop/throw/return stolen goods as soon as they know that I have caught them. This case was different. Once I got across the street, a large gang of black adolescents and men appeared from around the corner, all brandishing their share of the loot. Although I did nothing to provoke them (I simply asked them to return the goods, and even offered them cigarettes if they returned them), they quickly formed a ring around me and savagely beat me.

I knew I had no chance of taking on eight or more people (typically I can take two, or three if I am lucky/able to funnel them through a narrow passageway), so I feigned unconsciousness hoping that they would feel satisfied that they had thoroughly batted me. However, they continued to throw haymakers and long, swinging kicks at my face and body for another ten to fifteen seconds.

After they fled in random directions and getaway cars, I returned to my post, trailing blood behind me, to call the police.

Omg this is so tragic these people are awful people and not just because they beat you up, but because they had absolutly no reason to attack you at all besides some dumb pride shit, I mean hell you were even cool about it offering some cigs.

I was REALLY hoping the story was goign to be about how you worked at a gas station for X years and won the lotto after seeing so many others buy tickets or something.

In all seriousness, I feel like the events and feelings you had while the events were happening can't be shown in a news station video, and seriously I think making a game about that experience would be really interesting because only then would I really fully understand the whole weight of what happened that night.

So tragic, but I really hope this turns into something positive from all the negativity it brought you.

Even if you might feel very unlucky to have this happen the thing to remember is you are very lucky to make it through with just the injuries you have.

I had a similar event happen to me (I got jumped by about a dozen guys late at night while walking home from work and wound up getting stabbed in the face) and for a good while it left me angry and paranoid, and I think the violation of my sense of personal security was much worse than the physical pain.

I think the sooner you get through the total mindfuck it can cause you, and realize that if you're still alive then you didn't handle the situation too badly, the easier the physical pain is to deal with and the easier it is to move onward from the whole event.

In any case, I hope things take a turn for the better for you.

What sucks worse is that you'll probably get fired for chasing after the shoplifter.

Nah, my boss even picked me up from the hospital. We had one employee who took all of the money in the cash register after his shift to deal speed, then would return a few days later with it after making a profit. He didn't even get fired for that.

That's the rumor anyway.

Well this sucks. I was once jumped by a small gang of black youth once, too, but they didn't beat me up. Then again, I'm twice to three times your size, but I ended up running because I wasn't sure if they were carrying anything or not. Otherwise, I would have gladly rumbled 4 v 1 against them (they were all tiny/scrawny gangsta wannabes) but I had a tire iron in my car and I was excited about having the chance to finally use it on someone, but by the time I drove back to where they jumped me they were long gone.

I'd say it sucks that it's always black kids doing this shit because then it gives everybody an excuse to think that black people are terrible but... on the other hand I lived in the blackest, most hood area of San Francisco for a year and never had a problem. I laid pretty low, though.

Anyways, what I find odd is that you live in Australia but don't have an Australian accent?

I do find it odd that both people telling stories felt the need to mention that the people were black, as if it mattered in literally any way.

Would you mention they were black if they hadn't robbed you?  I mean, it's pretty fucked up if you feel that the color of someone's skin is a detail that clarifies the extent of their action at all.

But Capntastic, what if they're trying to indicate that as sad as it is, and how truly not-racist they are, black people just commit more crimes!

To that I say:  Correlation is not causation.  The fact that black people are typically underprivileged in most countries due to institutionalized racism stemming from centuries of human rights abuses, leads to the recognition that poor, unhappy, disenfranchised people are more likely to commit crimes.

I was born at Fort Benning Military Hospital and moved around with my dad for his airborne ranger exercises and honor guard duties in Washington DC. We moved to Australia when I was about eleven years old for some reason.

Ever heard of police profiling? It matters a lot; more than people are comfortable considering.

The only effective profiling I've ever been privy to is that older men working around children are about ten thousand times more likely to be pedophiles or own child porn. My dad's a fed, and basically the main perps that the FBI catches are always older male bus drivers or school officials or day care staff.

The mentality they use to justify the profiling is "Children suck, so the only reason you'd ever elect to be around them is because you're sexually attracted to them" Agents tend to have pretty twisted senses of humor, though... :p

Racial profiling is given a lot less credibility, though. Mainly because race doesn't suggest much about a person compared to pretty much any other aspect of their personhood because

What if the races were reversed in the story? Anyway, the really interesting part isn't that the perpetrators are black, but that they're immigrants. Not to demonize immigrants in general. It's just that the Australian Gov't clearly failed its duty to its citizens in this case.

Immigration is a privilege, not a right. It's ideally contingent on benefit for a nation, which is the gov'ts job to ensure (who can come is at their discretion). Inviting a criminal element harms the nation, so here, they failed.

Obviously they can't pry deep into the hazy background of every ill-documented foreigner. But immigrant criminality is immense in many Western countries, so clearly it's a systemic failure, not just a few isolated incidents here and there.

Let's suppose that you manage to get past the area between "I imagine I should bring a gun to work" and actually bringing a gun to work, putting out a gun against a swarm of hoodlums who probably live in the same area is probably not a good idea, especially if you don't really intend to use it.

paul raises a serious and important point: sometimes you just must shoot a black guy.

Black guys, despite high aggro level, have an AI that usually has a fleeing debuff when another creep is killed in a radious 3mts.

you have to take into consideration that the traditional black guy AI script takes into consideration the number of black guys in the vicinity, so in my case i probably have to take down at least 2 of them.

also keep in mind that they will flee only to return in greater number, so i would probably need an infinite ammo debug hack

just shoot the gas pump when you're surrounded

i don't want to lose my job! i remember what happened when i shot the gas pump in gta 4. its only worthwhile when you have 13 cars stacked on top of each other next to the pump.

Additional to that you might need some point invested into dex and stamina because sometimes the gas pump triggers the mob crowd event and running away from the blacks will be hard if the level has too many aleyways

Someone stole some junk food from Sigvatr's place of work, he chased them down and got beat up.  The idea of bringing a gun into the mix- even if only to provide the credible threat of lethal force- is just so absurdly stupid.

I have a friend who used to work night shifts at an urban gas station. Sometimes packs of chavs would tell him they were gonna wait til his shift ended then jump him, but they were always too drunk to remember their own threats for long.

I'd give them some free booz just to make sure.
