Google gets creepier by the day.

And I still use their stuff because they make damn good software. Sigh.

Goddamn it.
I really tried not to like this, but look at it, it's beautiful, and there's so much space for the webpage
Sigh, they will eventually take control of everything

Testing it now and like it didn't immediately make me regret testing it. Seems rather nice and smooth so far. Avoids a couple things some other browsers do to annoy me.

It does some interesting things. Like every tab being a process so that if anything gets out of hand you should be able to kill that one process instead of the whole browser (shift+esc to use Chrome's task manager. You can see and kill different tabs in the windows task manager as well, but it's (far as I know, at least) hard to tell which process is which tab), and memory leaky things should be easier to deal with and, stuff.

And if you kill a tab's process the tab goes "Aw, Snap!" and becomes sad face.

Google is overpowered.

And we all so got cyborged. Apart from that this still looks wonderful.

I'll never change Opera.

they ripped of Opera Speed Dial.. those bastards
(http://i36.tinypic.com/2060ra.png)

Still Opera has integrated mail, torrent and irc client, an loads of awesome skins to make it very minimal.
Way to go, Google Chrome!

Man this is too cool.
Still no way to deactivate bilinear filtering though. :[
Or is there...

Edit: incognito windows  :D
Edit2: The automatic history bookmarklike page thing whenever you open a new tab is pretty cool.
Edit3: Apparently it's based off of safari.

They seem to have a webcomic (http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/) explaining the browser's development

Eclipse, they're not claiming to have thought everything up themselves. They say they've taken the best of the existing browsers and tried to improve it.

Watch out for the EULA though. Until Google updates it don't overuse it. They have the right to do what the fuck they want with stuff you submit using it.

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: Gnarf on September 02, 2008, 01:47:27 PM
With what exactly, and how do they get hold of it?

From what I've read it seems it's supposed to be all very cleverly secure and all very open source. Gathering a lot of data you don't want them to have sounds like the sort of thing they wouldn't be able to get away with. No idea though.

Until it gets adblock, I'll probably stick with Firefox, but it's very fast.

I wonder if Google will even allow adblock though, considering that they, like, sell ads and all. But I don't know if they can prevent people from creating adblock plugins if it's open source.

The interface is too big. It's also slower than my Firefox, since it doesn't have CRUISE CONTROL advanced config.

This is really good news. Like you, folks, I also fear Google for the huge corporation that it's become, but this is a good push for browsers in general. They're doing a lot of things right, and it's open source.

Yeah, I dunno.  I like my Firefox.  I've spent a lot of time getting it to do what I want, and I don't deal with change very well.

I think I'll hold out a while and see what kind of plugins and stuff come out of the open source community.  Other than that it doesn't look interesting enough to justify switching over.

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: Core Xii on September 02, 2008, 07:22:02 PM
It's faster than Firefox for sure. In fact, Firefox has seemed to get slower and slower over time. I've got a quad core and plenty of RAM, so the whole multithreading thing is good for me.

Having that said, I do have one complaint. The whole tabs-at-the-top thing. Sure, it may be structurally logical, but screw that, tabs need to be easily accessible. Okay it's only a couple hundred pixels higher, but even that counts.

Of course I can't actually use it until it catches up to Firefox in functionality. Can't imagine browsing without Adblock, mouse gestures, etc.

I must admit I love it too  :(

Mentalpatient109: I like the bookmarks, very easy to use and I usually make a new tab before loading bookmarks anyways. (In case you didn't notice it, the bookmark folders are in the upper right corner of the "new tab" page.)

I thought this browser was a direct response to IE8's privacy mode, and its threat to their business (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/793abbdc-7497-11dd-bc91-0000779fd18c.html?nclick_check=1) of profiting on what they know about you.

That and being more web app capable - which sounds like a good thing from a browser games perspective.

Sadly, I, too, love it.

Worst thing about Google: they really are the best at what they do.

Okay, I gave it a shot.  I figured what the hell.

Then I uninstalled it not ten minutes later.  Sorry, Google.  I need my customization.  And my full page zoom.  I'll check back when there are more features.

And I didn't notice that it was any speedier than Firefox.  I don't really have a lot of extensions though.

Just trying it out now, I love how it's so damn small and unobtrusive.

strange, the interface looked too big for me. Maybe because the one i'm using with opera is only few pixels tall

Google will one day rule this feeble planet with an iron fist and we will love them for it.

At least, I will. Good browser. Also, looks like I won't be posting any IP with Chrome, then. Thanks for the heads up, Hideous ol' boy.

http://tapthehive.com/discuss/This_Post_Not_Made_In_Chrome_Google_s_EULA_Sucks

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.4 You confirm and warrant to Google that you have all the rights, power and authority necessary to grant the above license.

Imagine this future scenario, chrome is a huge success, everybody uses it... Technically wouldn't everybody's Intellectual Property in the world be owned by google?
Yikes, that's fucking creepy

Title: Re: New Browser released today

That EULA clause is seriously evil, if it does indeed mean what we think it does. That guy from tapthehive.com said he was a lawyer, so it does seem to be the case. I don't know what the hell Google was thinking, and I hope they remove that after the beta.

Title: Re: New Browser released today

If it's true open source will the EULA stick to all versions?

Actually, is there any more info on that I.P. thingus? I mean, is the claim legit? Because, yes,  that does have rather nasty implications. But it sounds... absurd?

EDIT: Well, I read it. There ya go, ey? They own your mind. I'm still using it, though. Prossibly.

It's not hard to find out. Just reinstall Chrome and read it.

You don't even have to, just go here:

http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html

In other news, I've read Chrome already has a 3% market share. That's more than Opera.

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: kyn on September 03, 2008, 04:30:14 AM
There's this guy in /g/ (http://zip.4chan.org/g/imgboard.html) who talked to one of the chrome's guys in the official IRC channel, and he says it's just a mistake, they just use this license for all google products, it's just a misunderstanding, they will remove it.

I know this is pretty shady, but probably, possibly, maybe it's true.

Okay, look at this:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10030888-92.html?part=rss

It seems Chrome's JavaScript performance blows all other browsers out of the water. I think this is their main motivation for introducing a new browser. They have all these JS apps like Gmail, Google Documents etc, so having a browser which can run these much faster than the current JS implementations is a big business advantage. After all, they want to beat Microsoft Office in the browser.

Also, once websites start making use of this new JS performance by writing more demanding browser apps, all other browsers will essentially be obsolete because they won't be able to run these new web apps at a satisfying speed. Unless FF integrates this new V8 JS engine, but I don't know what the chances for this are, seeing that they just recently introduced a new JS engine of their own. So there's a certain danger here. On the other hand, in this area some competition can't hurt because I've always been disappointed with current JS performance.

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: Alec on September 03, 2008, 04:45:05 AM

You figure a company like Google would have at least one person assigned to making sure EULAs are worded correctly before something as huge as a browser beta goes out.

Tracemonky, while not king, should be a decent enough competitor for V8. I don't know what goes for Squirrelfish, however.

That's pretty much just saying that google can display your stuff in their browser and translate/cache/whatever it in their search engines, though, isn't it?

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: Gnarf on September 03, 2008, 09:23:39 AM
It sort of sounds like they've slapped some regular Google kind of EULA onto it. Since the whole thing makes a little sense in the context of most of their other products, where you're actually submitting content to Google. Unless Chrome is actually phoning home all the content you're submitting to all kinds of completely-unrelated-to-Google things, the whole thing seems fairly meaningless. If it did anything of that sort, that in itself would be a far bigger issue than whatever the EULA says. Though we could still just grab the source and remove the evil bits.

I'm not really sure what we're supposed to be worrying about here. Whatever the EULA says, if the content we're submitting with Chrome is not sent off to Google, and if there's no way to tell it apart from content submitted with IE or whatever, then it can't really be used for anything no matter what it really means. Is there something I'm missing here?

I am looking into adblocking and mouse gestures for chrome (http://googlechrometips.blogspot.com/2008/09/make-google-chrome-more-like-opera-or.html) right now, and if I can get these things to work as well as in Firefox, I am totally switching.
All that trouble just for the slight speed increase? No thanks, I'll just stick to Firefox.

At the moment Firefox has more support, and doesn't take all of my resources so I'll stick with it and maybe wait to see what happens with chrome.

Title: Re: New Browser released today
Post by: FoxBlitzz on September 08, 2008, 02:19:23 PM
I'm not using Google Chrome until they can get it to stop sucking up all my resources. Random CPU spikes and constant hard-drive read/writes are not indicative of a "low-profile" browser. One person is even getting over 500MB RAM usage just from viewing the PHP manual! Serious!

http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/warning-google-chrome-browser-has-serious-memory-cpu-issues/

Even when they do fix the issues, I'm not going to use it as my main browser. I want an options screen that has more than two entries, because I care about being able to customize my software. I don't want it simplified to an "On-Off" switch because I'm smart enough to know what "Keep my history for 90 days" means. It means it will keep my history for 90 days. And if I were to exclude the titlebar from my Firefox setup, then it would actually manage space more efficiently than Chrome, while still giving me access to what I want.

Among other things, I disagree with the merging of the search and address bars. When I want to search for a YouTube video, I want to tell it that I'm specifically looking for a YouTube video in order to provide more relevant results, and have it pull up a list of matches on the site. If it's only going to give me an "I'm Feeling Lucky" guess, then it's completely worthless.

I like Chrome much better than Firefox, but I did have some extensions like a calculator and simple mail on the status bar I don't feel whole without.

A few more clicks is a small price to pay for how fast and dependable Chrome is over firefox though. My computer never played nice with Firefox anyway, the odds of a new tab restarting my computer were frightening.

But let's all look forward to plugins!

Also tried opera, and it was really good, the only thign that keeps it behind FF is the FF search bar. I hate search windows, they are so intrusive and unefficient.

I've occasional little glitches, but slow? Strange. Here, I'm getting about 1/4 the memory usage of Firefox, and it loads pages at about twice the speed :S

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the time Opera used to shove ads in your face. Since it seems to be free now, how is it supported nowadays?

Also, I've gotten quite attached to the new smart address bar in Firefox 3, it's incredibly convenient. Don't know if I want to live without that anymore.
