Title: New Dr Who season
Post by: louisdeb on September 04, 2012, 08:28:57 AM
Anyone watch it? Really liked the first one, happy that Oswin is going to be the Dr's new companion (apparently).

New series? Or new season? Netflix hardly even updates anything.

Season, Netflix won't get it for about a year though.

I just want to say I'm glad it wasn't actually love that saved Amy, because that's been done too much in Doctor Who. (Moffat must realize it now)

Season sorry (thought it sounded wrong when i wrote it. edited).

Yes. ^
Though lots of people I spoke to where like 'oh they used the crappy it was a dream thing'... don't think they quite got the gist of the episode.

I'm familiar enough to know when a storyline is a particularly bland dud.

Yeah this was pretty obviously a cyberman script that got dalekified for premiere appeal or something. Lots of apparently out of character stuff and the "asylum" being just a dumb graveyard was a waste.
But I am really happy about them all forgetting about the doctor because all that stupid I AM THE COMING STORM stuff has been getting really fucking tiresome. That lame "The Predator!" thing that they all suddenly knew and started using (even the ones on the planet) for no reason just to forget about at the end seemed a bit like a sly parody of the dalek boogieman thing.

ps watch the planetary explosion closely.

I thought the first episode was quite good.  Also, I'm glad that the Amy turning into a Dalek zombie plot didn't end like the last few times someone turned into one of the evil things, with the Doctor telling them to think Human thoughts until they're cured.

I liked it. Everything I've come to expect from a DW ep.

Well, she's in the next episode too.

I really wanted that Dalek girl to become The Doctor's companion :( Will she be a returning character by any chance?

The actress had been announced as being the next companion. It was apparently (http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2012/sep/03/doctor-who-companion-jenna-louise-coleman?newsfeed=true) supposed to be a surprise that she was in this episode, though I wouldn't think anyone but the most extreme Doctor Who fans would not only recognise the actress as being the person who was supposed to be the next companion, but also know that she wasn't supposed to be appearing until the Christmas special. So quite an exclusive surprise.

Well I take that as good news, seems like an interesting character. I'll have to read up on the IMDB page a little more.

Yeah for reals how many times has he left Amy on Earth now? I don't know maybe it's like twice but it feels like lots. I won't believe it next time he leaves her there FOR GOOD, she needs to seriously die or spin off and never come back.

Opinions on this week?

The Doctor seemed really eccentric at the beginning, was kinda off putting, but it got better.
And it seems like they're using the whole 'there's something at the core' too much...

Also a side point, does anyone else feel they've just added some Instagram filter to the intro for this season?

the dalek episode was pretty okay! the new companion (?) lady seemed way too eccentric and delightfully quirky and so smart and witty and oh my~~~ but the twist at the end helped to fix that a bit. amy's weird drunken scene was really unintentionally hilarious. and yeah, it would've been way cooler if the asylum was full of crazy dalek war criminals who all have crazy personalities and shit like that but instead they were just broken and shitty. ALSO BTW THE DALEKS DIDNT SEEM TO CONCERNED ABOUT NUKING THE ENTIRE FUCKING PLANET AT THE END SERIOUSLY IF THEY WERE FINE WITH THAT WHY DID THEY BOTHER WITH THE ASYLUM IN THE FIRST PLACE

They wanted to preserve what they considered perfection, but when they found out the things in the asylum could get out they panicked.

This weeks episode was good I guess. I don't care much for Matt Smith honestly. Eccleston should just come back :(

Tennant has always been my favourite.

Tennant for the win.

I'm not a big fan of Dr Who, but I've watched most of the new (2005+) episodes. After watching a few episodes with matt smith, then going back to Tennant, it's obvious how it was almost impossible to pick up the role after tennant. This guy was just too brilliant.
Watching old tennant episodes after smith is like a breath of fresh air after being held underwater.

I will say I do not watch much Doctor Who. But... most of the Tennant episodes I've seen with that red haired woman were written terribly. Look out, aliens have put poison carburetors in all the cars; they're singing a song; red haired lady is the messiah. I mean, it's just... it's just terrible. No actor could redeem such storylines.

The only doctor-who-related-show I have legitimately enjoyed was the Children of Earth series of Torchwood. So that's, what, a week out of several decades of production. Hope it was worth it.

I've gotta say that was a really good series.

My issue with Torchwood is all the sex scenes they try to include, it comes off like they're trying to be edgy; but it isn't.

Yes. Note I didn't mention any of the other seasons; that is why.

I kindof liked the crossover arc between torchwood and drwho that was disseminated along several episodes of both shows, also that epic torchwood end of season where you learn that mmphfmmphf has been mmhhpfmmhpf for thousands years.
Also liked the zombified guy.
But yeah, way too much affirmative action sex. also, the main girl is annoying.

Best who episode : Blink

New episode was cool, a little over the top but that's what I've come to expect. Good stuff.
