Title: Visual Novel Game - Facts for English Post by: SouthpawHare on September 15, 2012, 08:37:21 PM Hello everyone.
I've previously been speaking here about my Fighting/Strategy Game Fimbulvetr, which I had to put on hold for a time due to being employed to work on another project. Well, at last, I've been allowed to publicly post a video as a teaser of this project, which have previously been private, showing the work we've done so far. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=789f20-dwGg The game is a visual novel style game with an educational twist - it is designed to promote the pamphlet included in the game, which in turn promotes tips and reminders on speaking and writing English correctly. The story, involving time travel to a future where English has degraded into leetspeak and bad Internet memes, is intended to be silly and humorous, while still providing some educational benefit. We're hoping for feedback and criticism on a lot of things - really, as much as possible. The story, the humor, the pacing, the puzzles, the voice acting... all of it is fair game, and we appreciate as much as you're willing to give =) Thanks again, everyone! It seemed more like a short gameplay video than a teaser.
The game is a decent idea and the voice acting was much better than expected. The dialogue is all right too. It does seem really lethargic, though. I got impatient just waiting for the talking to stop so I could see what sort of user-interaction there would be. I feel like the game is in need of more gameplay. As it is, it's like a very slow movie with little bits of incredibly simple gameplay scattered throughout. I know it's labeled as a "Visual Novel Game", but if you want this to be a fun and educational game, it should probably have a little more game to it. That said, the story does sound fairly intriguing so maybe that'll be enough. I think the pacing could be improved and the "puzzle" difficulty adjusted slightly. Who is your target audience for this? Title: Re: Visual Novel Game - Facts for English Post by: SouthpawHare on September 18, 2012, 07:29:20 PM Thanks for your feedback. Indeed, the pacing is something that we're trying to tweak, and likely there will be longer sections of questions. It likely won't change too drastically, though - the focus is still the linear story.
The intended audience is the middle-school age range. The program is not designed to teach English, but to give reminders and pointers on it. I hope middle-school students will find enough enjoyment in a game like this. The fact that you're not trying to teach, just to remind and give tips, sounds like a good idea. That might make it more appealing to potential players by hopefully avoiding the stigma that most "educational" games carry. I look forward to seeing what happens with this project.
