Title: Retro City Rampage
Post by: forwardresent on October 09, 2012, 12:47:23 PM
Anyone else pick this up? General thoughts?

I love all the references, and I'm probably missing half of them. It's quite fun to play, I've done a few missions and caused some mayhem. I think all the parody material is most of the appeal though, my fiancé didn't grow up with classic games and only recently saw Back To The Future so the game doesn't really appeal to her.

One issue, I think the controls are a bit of a pain. I changed it to more like Isaac but I'd like to option to rebind them. Seriously Z as a cover button when I use WASD to move is a tad annoying.

I'm using a 360 controller and character control seems great, but driving is...strange for me. I've not had enough time to start really exploring and causing mayhem but the pace seems nice and frenetic which I was hoping for. Yah, there are a ton of references; I like some, think a few are goofy, and probably have missed a ton.

I've been playing on and off and the saving seems strange to me; I assumed I'd be able to save at any point but that doesn't seem to be the case which is kind of annoying.

I think saving is more like GTA after each mission.

I found out that the graffiti on the walls is cheat codes and suddenly I was playing something a little more like Prototype. This game keeps surprising me.

that's kinda what I feared. and 14.99 is above my impulse buy trigger (and I have enough games I've yet to play) so I'll wait for a sale.

I picked it up and played it for a few hours tonight. It was good! I'm wrote a review of it, but decided I wouldn't post it until after finishing the game, as the dev informed me there are a lot of things beyond the core GTA-style gameplay that you experience in the first few hours of playing.

eh, its not that fun despite incredible presentation and polish. i was looking forward to it for a while and was underwhelmed in the end. it was way more interesting to see it in action from the trailers. playing it is completely different.
Not saying you are wrong, but, my experience was the opposite: I got what I expected and hoped for.

Probably is a very personal thing.

Just played this some. I like it, it has good vibe and nice art. It looks like a real thing from past. It's retro approach only shows through its parody content.

However I don't think I like the story mode at all. It keeps throwing a cut scene or help box at you, and the flow of the play is interrupted all the time. It is very frustrating and tedious.

Sure, many of the "missions" are pretty funny but it doesn't really feel that I am in the control of the game. I wish that the constant quicktime-events were not what the developer meant with "modern game mechanics".

But I will get back to this, I just love unlocking those small arcade games.

I'm having a blast with Retro City Rampage. It isn't the best indie game of the year or anything, but it's absolutely worth the $15

I've only done the first mission so far, but it was a blast. The Back to the Future portion was amazing. Love it

I did a quick Indie Snapshot of the game. Here's the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz-JcNFajno) in case you wanna see the game in action.

Having sunk a few more hours into it, I think it's fair to say that this is a great extended coffee-break game - play for a few hours tops, and then it's a lot of fun.

ok, so this is 50% off on steam right now. is it worth it if you like GTA and similar gams?

I've had a lot of fun driving over random people with tanks. Or driving backwards while firing missiles at the army that's chasing me.  Does that answer your question?

Also, the two worst missions have been changed in a recent update to be far less annoying.

For me it kind of had an exponential curve. I loved it at first but over the course of 2 hours I lost enough interest and haven't gone back to it.

It's a pretty fun game for around 3 hours, then it starts getting repetitive and the missions start getting very annoying.

At one point, the game makes fun of "following" missions, saying how annoying they are. And than gives you one of the worst following missions I have ever played!  :-X

Also, introducing a new mechanic in the last level of the game and making you fight the last boss with that mechanic is not a good idea... seriously, during the last boss fight all I could think about was how I wanted to punch the guy who made this game in the face.  :handshakeL: :apoplectic:
