Title: My rpg project No name. Post by: beetleking22 on October 23, 2012, 05:13:55 AM This game is a classically 16-bit influenced, yet modernly designed, RPG video game. The game features with new combo turn-based system, skill soul system, act worlds.
This game is early stages and this moment I'm doing tilesets for this game.. when the game has progressed a bit further I need composer, coder, and another pixel artist. Now im doing this game alone. Basic Storyline: Wip[/b] Not done. Craft wip: Not done Ideas - All your armors and your weapon will appear in the game.. If you buy new armos you can see it in your charachter. - No open world but every act have a big map like in diablo and you can come back to older places if you want to. - Collect 100 crystal like a item and with them you can unlock secret world. Some tileset test. (http://i50.tinypic.com/qrn48w.png) Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: golemshaper on October 23, 2012, 06:07:34 AM The trees are very nice! The trees are very nice! Looking forward to seeing what comes of this. Those are pretty old trees. I made little bit better. Some tileset update. -New tree foliage - New tree trunk - New bush - New rock (http://i47.tinypic.com/2vdobk9.png) Some of monster concept art. Post by: golemshaper on October 23, 2012, 02:10:52 PM Personally, I'd recommend Unity 3D. It has HUGE multi-platform support, and there are various 2D tools that help it be 2D friendly.
http://www.unikronsoftware.com/2dtoolkit/ <--- Like this one. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: SundownKid on October 23, 2012, 03:42:06 PM Unity 3D is actually a bit tricky to make games with in 2D, since the 2D tools are not built-in, but plug-ins. However, I can attest to the fact that it works, since I have an unfinished 2D RPG engine in Unity from an attempt to make a retro RPG. I'm a writer, not a coder, but it would be great to see the engine further developed if I could also utilize the finished product. If you do go the Unity 3D route, I'm willing to offer it to you so your coder can get a head start.

Post by: Dr. Cooldude on October 24, 2012, 03:42:20 AM Mother of God the character design is beautiful :o
Don't you ever change the style! Anyways, I'm following this. EDIT: Oh, and I definitely recommend XNA, it's actually a pretty good framework for your needs. I even think that your game has to be programmed in XNA if you want it on Xbox Live*. *Only licensing can hold you back from getting it on Xbox Live. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. I want both on xbox live and steam if it possible. Should it be programmed 2 Software? Nope, not at all! You see, XNA games can be made for Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone. A lot of popular games, such as Terraria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraria), Magicka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magicka), Bastion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastion_(video_game)), etc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_XNA#Partial_List_of_Games_that_use_XNA) has been made in XNA, and they all run under Windows and Steam. Steam officially support XNA games (see this) (http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/FAQ.php), so XNA would be the way to go.Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: SundownKid on October 24, 2012, 06:43:49 AM Sorry, but I can't recommend you use XNA for the reason that Windows 8 will apparently not support it. Also, putting indie games on Xbox is about the worst vector for selling them you can have - the store there is abysmal in terms of quality control and sales.
Your best bet would be selling it as a multiplatform game (PC/Mac/Linux/etc.), really. That way you don't have to pay anything to license it for a certain platform - or at least, less than you would if you were doing it for a console. If it's an RPG, you should also factor a writer into the monetary equation. RPGs in particular require a good plot in order to hold the player's interest. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. I thought it just didn't support XNA with the Metro UI thingy. ???Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: seancruz on October 24, 2012, 09:34:03 AM So far I like the direction of the trees, bushes, and flowers, but the grass appears very flat and empty compared to the other assets and tiles you've made. It shouldn't require much, maybe just some low value grass blades here and there to give the grass some form of texture.

Yeah i know that :) Im not writer thats why thought I'd give it to someone else to write story for my game with my little additions. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Combine that with XBLIG being the pits, and it's not really a good idea. You do have to get a a license for Unity, but if you are hiring a programmer, they will probably already have it. Tileset is nice too though. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: Chis on November 04, 2012, 10:59:26 AM Man I really love your art style. I would say to raise the contrast on those tiles to match the first ones. How about changing up the tree trunk or the shape of the tree as well?

Not sure how well that works, but it's cross-platform.

Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: DMJohn0X on November 22, 2012, 07:47:43 PM Love your work! Your art style is gorgeous. It reminds me very much of a cross between Secret of Mana and Yoshie's Island.
I too am in the planning stages of a retro-rpg. I've decided to work in Unity, however. I've hear abysmal things about the 360 and have decided to stay away. Dust and Fez were sponsored and still didn't make much compared to what is normal for similar titles on STEAM... and the SuperMeatBoy guys made more on their steam launch than they did the first 3-4 combined months of XBL. That said, I recommend checking out Indie Game: The Movie before you choose XNA over Unity. =P Also, it's just a fantastic fucking movie. (On Steam sale too if you want to watch it in HD with bonus commentary tracks) Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Post by: beetleking22 on November 26, 2012, 11:01:02 PM Love your work! I would love to see this finished! Thank you.. When I did these tileset.. I did a lot of mistakes! There where too much tiles with different style.. example trees with 15 color and bush with 5 color and foliage was too simple compared to another tileset... I should aim for one direction and keep this direction througout the whole game. So im going do it all over again. Title: Re: My rpg project No name. Nonono. That is a misunderstanding. You're talking about how bad Xbox publishing is, but then you suddently blame XNA out of nowhere? XNA has nothing to do with Xbox publishing.I recommend checking out Indie Game: The Movie before you choose XNA over Unity. =P I agree that Xbox publishing is pretty much crap, but I don't think that should be an argument for using Unity over XNA. We should remember that XNA is just a 2D/3D game framework that doesn't only work on Xbox, but also Windows. Take for example Magicka, it's only available on Windows, and they're not published by any Microsoft entities at all. Some people might argue that XNA is bad because it's limited to Micro$oft products, but there's also Monogame, which (what I've heard) should be pretty good too. Also, I've tried making a 2D game in Unity, and I would prefer XNA/Monogame. And one last thing, XNA is REALLY easy for game dev beginners, which is also a reason why I would recommend that to Beetleking. EDIT: also Indie Game The Movie does not cover anything technical, for what I remember. EDIT EDIT: Also, I could never dream of paying $1500 to make a 2D game with a 3D engine, instead of a free framework that is dedicated to 2D and 3D. That is a big waste of money. Its not death. We started developed new game wich is adventure platformer. Reason why this game project is on-hold because Good Jrpg game is very hard making with 1-2 people and zero money. So if this platformer game is going to somehow succcess.. we are going to invest money and hire more people for this Jrpg project.
