It's porbably a geoingineered storm, meant to prolongue the elections(cause of the riot threats) and it's probably being made using some haarp system or something.

sandy will pass over 26 nuclear power plants, each one a potential disaster like last year's haroshima disaster
The 'Fukushima Disaster' was the second worst nuclear disaster in history (after Chernobyl). It was caused by a magnitude 9.03 earthquake (the strongest ever recorded in Japan, 5th strongest recorded worldwide), which caused a tsunami with the 9th highest recorded death toll ever (in a country used to earthquakes and tsunamis). Furthermore, TEPCO's lack of maintenance and security on the power plant was so bad that it was the subject of government investigation (oh, and they ignored a court order regarding safety measures and disregarded two studies regarding tsunami and earthquake concerns).

No people died in the disaster. 39 people were injured. Estimates on radiation say that incidence of cancer will increase by 0.1%, which will give ~180 people cancer, of which ~130 will die.

In contrast, the panicked evacuation after the disaster (because ZOMG NUCLEAR DISASTER) cost the lives of roughly 600 people (and the evacuation was estimated to save ~28 people from getting cancer). The earthquake and tsunami in general caused 15,870 recorded deaths, 122 times as many as from the nuclear disaster that remained in the news for so long.

If, somehow, Sandy manages to wreck each and every single nuclear power plant in its way to a Fukushima-like state, it would (extrapolating Fukushima's data) in the long term cause 3380 deaths. A hurricane with the power to do that, though, would cause many, many, many many many many more deaths by itself, though.

Nuclear disaster risk is way overestimated.

Yes, because it was obviously created by the government in order to cause billions worth in damages that must be paid by the government. You'd think maybe they would make a simple thunderstorm? (And also not be so stupid)

To deal with riots in NYC, all they have to do is mark some arbitrary "protest here" area, wait for the protesters to leave it, and arrest everyone involved on trumped-up charges. So why even bother with the weather?

I never said the government made this. perhaps the banks did. they might like the government taking loans from them. perhaps they dont give a shit about money? maybe they are all just evil platypuses wearing tophats and discussing how they should rewire the human brains. you never know... fear the platypuses.

Moral of the story: NPP spews radioactivity, better to stay put than run because you might trip on your shoelaces and fatally faceplant.

It's less fatally faceplanting and more hospital patients being evacuated in an insanely wide range while they really needed hospital care. Also old people collapsing due to the 'zomg end of the world' stress caused by the increasingly broad evacuation and media hype.

My prayers go out to all those affected by this storm. I used to live in PA, and am no stranger to the kinds of trouble that come with severe weather. I still remember branches falling from the weight of collected ice, and bailing out our house's window well in two feet of slush to insure that our basement didn't flood.

At present, I live in AZ. If you ever get tired of nasty weather, move out here to AZ.

Got power back at 1:30 this morning.  Bunch of trees down in my neighborhood, one house has a corner destroyed, and one person's car was hit.  Nothing compared to what's happened in New Jersey.

During the summer it can be pretty brutal. But the rest of the year, it's fantastic. This past week has been just gorgeous. Clear skies, the temperature never going higher than the mid-90s, and almost no humidity whatsoever.

Even the worst monsoon storms we get out here don't hold a candle to what I saw in other parts of the country. We don't get snow, we don't get hail, we don't get hurricanes or tornadoes, and we are too far from the ocean to have to worry about large-scale flooding. The biggest natural disaster you have to worry about is the occasional flash flood, and that's usually just a matter of not driving in the wrong place.

There are disadvantages to living in the desert. But I can deal with hydrating more often than I am comfortable with. It's a small price to pay for getting to avoid the weather-related headaches that the rest of the country deals with.

Bullshit. Tucson's been +100 degrees all the way up to early October this year. It's been unbearable.

@Richard
Clear skies: too clear, even when the heat's off, it's too goddamn bright outside, particularly around high albedo surfaces.

Almost no humidity: it parches the mouth and throat. Even very humid climates are more pleasant (provided they're not hot).

Quote
we don't get hail
Except the time everyone's cars and roofs got fucked up by massive hailstones.

Also, having to walk when the dust blows in sucks. Ditto when it's hotter than hell, which is 1/3 of the year. I think a bit of property damage (barely anyone dies from extreme weather through most of the USA) is a small price to pay for a temperate, four-season climate.  Snow and rain can be a pain in the ass, but they also inspire and help ground you in nature. Driving an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned, artificially lit cavernous building, or at best walking outside but seeing everything from behind sunglasses- too much bullshit too much of the time.

The Valley is an absurd location for a city, a fact that'll catch up to its residents sooner or later. AZ in general ain't so bad though.

"Hours after Superstorm Sandy howled its way through the East Coast this week, unleashing a fatal trail of destruction, global reactions included outpouring of sympathy and support. But not in Syria, where some pro-government supporters welcomed the superstorm when it hit Monday, claiming the natural disaster is the result of high-tech secret engineering."

Blademasterbobo:

ironically enough, that came from someone's Facebook page in the affected area before the storm.

things escalated quickly in that area, one second it was nothing and even my family who lived there were joking, and the next second it was  me wondering if my family were still alive.

i can't say that im justifying it, but i had no clue that things would have become this bad.

power came back on just now (9 days without power or heat, although we had running water). fine other than that, no flood damage (as opposed to last year with hurricane irene). i mostly spent the time reading murakami (a wild sheep chase, hard-boiled wonderland and the end of the world, blind willow sleeping woman), studying kanji, going through 13 of my saturated dreamers notebooks / notepads (making a list of things i want to work on for the game once i was able to work on it again), exercising, and eating: i actually gained about 14 lbs during those 9 days, i suspect because i was mainly eating fast food / chinese take-out / peanut butter sandwiches, so my weight went from 154 to 168 (i'm 6'3 though so that's still underweight).
