Title: Dark Mod going standalone Post by: Hythlodaeus on December 05, 2012, 11:15:37 AM One of the most well-maintained Doom 3 mod projects is going standalone! Dark Mod is essentially a remake of the Thief series, only with an IP of its own, to avoid copyright issues. Although the current version is still tied to Doom 3, the following one (1.09) will be a a game of its own, thanks to the release of the idtech4 source code a few months ago.
The process of getting the mod working standalone is currently being discussed here: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/14225-standalone-progress/ For more information about the project itself, check this site: http://www.thedarkmod.com/main/ Personally, I believe this is great news for indie gaming and free/libre software in general, as Dark Mod is actually quite polished in terms of art assets and gameplay, although they're lacking a bit on the animation department. I played a lot of their maps, and I must say it truly is a very interesting experience that can be both engaging and scary. though it appears to be far away so if you want to play it anytime soon you'll have to buy or obtain doom3 through various other means. Actually there isn't. They're mostly struggling with a few missing art assets at this point. 1.09 will surely be standalone. I'd say give 'em 5 or 6 months. Aside from that, what needs to be done is to convert fan-made maps to the standalone version, which is up the every individual mapper. Title: Re: Dark Mod going standalone Post by: crowe on December 06, 2012, 06:27:19 AM You do realize that, because the mod comes with no maps, playing it without standalone maps would be pointless, right? The mod being standalone is meaningless if the maps aren't.

The mod being standalone is meaningless if the maps aren't. The mod does come with its own map (Tears of St. Lucia) and will soon feature a whole default campaign as well (Crucible of Omens). Aside from that, a lot of mappers are already making the effort to convert their stuff to the standalone version by replacing all Doom 3 art assets in their maps. One thing I forgot to mention is that the Dark Mod community is really close-knit, and most mappers are almost like secondary members of the dev team. mostly i'm amazed that something called "the dark mod" for doom 3 isn't some kind of facetious joke game It's a pun on the subtitle of the original Thief game: Thief - The dark project |
