Title: ChimpVenture | Finished Post by: Noel Berry on October 26, 2008, 07:41:51 AM ChimpVenture is a game for the fourth YYG competition. We (The Berryster and I) have been working on it for about 3 months. In ChimpVenture, you play as a Chimpanzee through 20 levels, filled with platform puzzles and challenges, as well as a few enemies. The game contains 4 bosses, 3 different items, and lots more. Your goal in ChimpVenture is to stop the humans from polluting the world more than they already have.

Thanks, Drazzke and The Berryster. Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Wishfallen on October 26, 2008, 08:16:10 AM Just played it a bit, hit the wolf and blocks with the stick, jumped around and stuff.
From what I've seen so far, nice graphical style and an interesting story (althought it says "wouldn't not" in the story bit, which should probably be "would not" or "wouldn't") Also, I jumped and fell down throught the ramp bit near the wolf and didn't respawn (intended not to respawn?) Looks good so far :) Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on October 26, 2008, 09:14:27 AM Thanks for the reply!
We'll fix the spelling/grammer mistake(s), as well as fix the respawning bug. I meant to make you respawn, but apprently didn't do it quite properly :P Thanks :) Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on November 11, 2008, 01:54:32 PM Hey, we have an update.
The Berryster and I got a bit more work done.. It took a while, but I'm pretty pleased. The new download link is in the first post. Theres now an NPC, a first 'official' level, the menu, story, intro screen, and some other stuff. Any feedback, constructive criticism, etc, are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Facero on November 11, 2008, 04:35:55 PM Loving the art style, and the welcome comedic relief in the preface.
Although explained that the animal's aren't feeling themselves thanks to the humans, i figured it would be more fitting to instead fight the occasional bulldozer rather than cute little rabbits. You're trying to protect the environment, not destroy its inhabitants. Also, are we going to see any vine swinging/river levels? Would be good to mix up the game play with treetop levels or underwater play, as well as incorporating some sort of projectile (maybe your banana's?). All in all, looks promising, can't wait to see the finished product :gentleman: Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: skaldicpoet9 on November 11, 2008, 04:52:38 PM Very nice presentation. My critique would be to make the chimp's movements a little more fluid as the movements as they are now a very stiff and rigid. The jump height could use a little bit of a height tweak. I also think that this game would benefit from the chimp having some sort of wall jump ability to kick himself off of walls to get out of tight spaces as well as some other combat abilities to bring a little more variety to the combat. I really dug the visuals, my only complaint is that I thought the background didn't get enough love I feel like it would be better suited to be done in the same style as the foreground to give the visuals a greater cohesion. All in all it is looking pretty decent, keep up the good work :)
Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on November 11, 2008, 06:13:08 PM Facero...
Thank you for the great reply! :) My brother, The Berryster (I think he is registered here, he may just not have posted) has created all the graphics in the game. We do plan to make some enemies humans / human machines, and not all little creatures created by humans. Also, yes, we do plan on adding different 'areas', which will have a different 'theme'. The first area is a jungle-ish theme, as you see now. (We will be adding more trees etc soon), and the next area will probably have some kind of water way/river theme. So, you can expect some changes in the gameplay. We were planning some kind of projectile/smacking Banana, although we will see where this idea leads :P skaldicpoet9 ... Thank you for another great reply ;D When you say the jump height should be tweaked, do you mean higher, or lower? I'll look into changing it a bit, anyway, though. I'll also see what my brother thinks of editing the chimp a bit. I will also look into the wall jump, as I agree that it would be a nice feature in the game, and shouldn't be too difficult to add in. We plan on adding a few other combat moves, other than just swinging a stick. We just have not had the time to implement them. I'm glad you liked the graphics. As I already said, my brother (The Berryster) created all of them.. We'll see if we can make the background a bit better too, as you suggested. Thanks for the great comments and constructive criticism/suggestions, they really help! :) Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: skaldicpoet9 on November 11, 2008, 07:56:55 PM I think that it just needs to be a bit higher. Not too high so as to make things a too easy on the player but just a little more so trying to get to platforms doesn't annoy the player due to the shortcomings of the monkey's jumping. However, if you add the wall jump making the jump height higher may make things too easy so I would say to wait and see how the wall jump alters the jump dynamic.
Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on November 16, 2008, 03:51:33 PM OK, I haven't changed the height yet, as I added in the wall jump. We will see what people think of the wall jump before we start changing the jumping height.
We finished level two yesterday, and hope to finish level 3 today/tomorrow, but we will not be posting a new demo until we have a total of 5 levels (and one boss). Here's a screenshot from level two: (http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/3/11/15/f_screenshot1m_7188c55.png) We also added a new enemy, but I think we're going to keep it a surprise. We made this enemy off of what people suggested (less cute animals, more evil machines) Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Facero on November 16, 2008, 04:30:21 PM We also added a new enemy, but I think we're going to keep it a surprise. Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: alexandersshen on November 18, 2008, 03:47:47 PM I'm keeping my giant eye on this one.
I love the graphic style. It's got the feel of a very traditional platformer and I like that. I look forward to seeing how wall jumps and such will work. As an engine test, the controls feel great. The only thing I'd comment on is that the game does feel a little slow. Granted, the chimpanzee is walking, but maybe allow for some running/faster movement? I also noticed the one thing I always had trouble in GM7 was the double keypress. Essentially, if you hold down the left arrow key and then hold down the right, the chimpanzee starts Moonwalking. Just thought I'd let you know 'bout that one. I'd like to see how the attack works with different enemies of different speeds. I can theorize an enemy that moves too quickly and causes the player to get hit regardless of how many times they hit the attack key. Anyhow, great start on the engine and I can't wait to see how it progresses. :gentleman: Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on November 20, 2008, 04:24:11 PM Thanks both.
Alecandersshen, I guess when my brother was making the game, he aimed for that style a bit. He seems to like to make graphics like this. Glad you like them. As for the slowness, we were going to add in a running thing (double tap right/left). We will see though... I will see if I can find a way to fix the moon walk too.. It shouldn't be that hard. Lastly, the attack will be able to do damage to most things, but with the newest enemy we recently added, it doesn't have much of an effect (you still can hit it, but it can be hard, it kinda flies/hovers). Thanks, we will have a new demo out soon. We still need to fix some bugs, add in level five, and clean up all the enemies, and we should be ready (The enemies bother me a bit, they seem a tad buggy and I want to make them better...) Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: SelfTitled on November 21, 2008, 10:06:26 AM It has a chimp . . . with a stick, I like already
graphics look good, style fits the game very well and seemed stable. Gameplay is a little simple and I'm not sure it would keep me playing but hopefully the puzzles will help that. I feel the chimp should maybe be able to do something else like hang onto edges or swing on branches. Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: eddietree on November 21, 2008, 10:13:17 AM don't monkeys supposed to fling feces as well? ???
But I guess that would degrade the overall class of the game Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: Noel Berry on November 22, 2008, 02:05:47 PM Eddietree.. I guess they might. Is that a fact, or a myth?
Selftitled... Thanks. Well, the version we are just about to post deals with some of the issues you currently have. We haven't added in many puzzles yet, but we have added in platform challenges (like moving platforms, etc), which should make the gameplay a bit more like yoshi's island. We haven't added any kind of edge grapple or vine swinging yet (although the vine swinging is definitely an idea we are going to consider), but we have added a wall jump. Thanks for the replies everyone! Any now, we have an update! Here's a list of the most major changes/updates: -Engine Updated and improved -New enemy added - 4 more levels added - Boss fight - Level selection screen - NPC house - Lots of platforming things (such as moving platforms, etc) - Working save files - New backgrounds and sprite improvements - Wall Jumping - much more! Any comments on our newest update would be great, thanks, Drazzke and The Berryster. Title: Re: ChimpVenture Post by: moshboy on November 23, 2008, 05:39:11 PM Eddietree.. I guess they might. Anyways, we wont have another update for a little while now.. we really haven't been working on the game as quickly as we should be. So far, we have level 6 completed. 4 more to go before we release anything new. Title: Re: ChimpVenture | Update Dec 7 Post by: Noel Berry on December 07, 2008, 02:26:38 PM Well, it took a while, but we have an update :)
There are now 5 more levels (making a total of 10), two new enemies, another boss, another NPC (only seen on lvl 10), and much more. Here's (http://www.box.net/shared/4bc41jrs3n) a download link, and there is a mirror on the first post. Thanks, Drazzke and The Berryster Title: Re: ChimpVenture | Finished Post by: Noel Berry on January 02, 2009, 08:15:15 AM I just wanted to say that we finished the game.
