Title: Tanks vs Tanks - a LAN RTT game. Downloadable Java Jar file.
Post by: ralphchapin on July 27, 2013, 05:18:56 PM
Tracks, Turrets, Armor, and Attitude

A hex board war game remade as a network Real Time Tactics game.

A somewhat realistic tank warfare game intended for network play (but works fine on one computer using AI or one person playing all sides).  Handles any number of players, playing on any number of teams.  Any player can be human or AI, and you can switch at any time.  Each player selects a set of various tank types, paying points for each one.  Then they explore terrain, find and capture control points, and find and destroy each other.

(There's simple, quick start, single-player-mode directions here:  http://ralphchapin.wordpress.com/tracks-turrets-armor-attitude/real-quick-start/ (http://ralphchapin.wordpress.com/tracks-turrets-armor-attitude/real-quick-start/))

Action is in real time.  Plays in 15 minutes to an hour, usually.  Large free-for-alls take longer, due to size and to special rules to give players who fight an edge over players who wait for for the fighters to wipe themselves out.

There are options for hidden terrain, hidden movement, map size, and army size.  You can design your own tanks, trading off speed, gun size, armor, and price.

Runs on:  anything with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM).  In other words, on any personal computer.  The whole game is just one executable Java Jar file.  Runs fine on a 512MB 1.0 GHz XP antique unless you go for big scenarios.  Having lots of screen space on a human player machine is a plus.

Feedback:  interested in anything.  Of particular interest, though:

If you get stuck anywhere between downloading the game and ordering tanks to move across the map, I need to know.

The game is a bit complicated, but I've gone to a lot of trouble to make it easy to get started.  If you can see how to make it easier, or if I made it too easy and you get ambushed by something you ought to have known about, I want to know.

The actual situation is somewhat involved.  The tanks and the terrain are to scale, so you're watching and moving up to 100 tanks (or more) of many different types over a map 20 to 100 kilometers across.  I've gone to a lot of work to make sure you can easily see what's going on.  The game is supposed to be about tactical decision making.  So, if you are spending all your time trying to figure out what's going on, I need to know.
