Announcement: Alpha 3 is out, go try it!
I've recently released a massive content update to the free client including a new game mode that doesn't suck! I want feedback and currently there are a whopping 6 people on the forums giving it to me so if you are willing to play the game with some newly adding redeeming value please do. Video walk through of new features in alpha 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CuUUh6upks)

What is it?
I've been working on this for a little over a year now and I recently switched to full time development.

I'm making a very detailed space combat game on top of an even more complicated network back-end. The idea is to design a client that can handle a lot of network states and all of the rendering etc. and then hopefully do a kickstarter to fund the development of a proper game with lots of artwork and plot and a large persistent world.

Gameplay:

The game will take place on a server you can host yourself. The world will be as dynamic and malleable as I can make it, but it won't just be a sandbox that lets you build your own ships and space stations. Instead, I want to tell a story through the motivations of certain factions and through the history and the landscape of the world. In that way all players on a server will become equal parts in the plot.

At it's core it will be a space captain RPG with a strong emphasis on exploration and character building. As in any space ship RPG, customizing and upgrading your ship will be central to the character development. In Wayward Terran Frontier I have taken it a step further by basing ship design on a tile-based system of modules and components. You design every single pixel of your ship from modules.

The multiplayer currently allows you to move between ships at will. This means you can fly a single ship cooperatively

This game features explosions!

Every ship you see has a crew walking around inside of it...unless they are dead.

The ship destruction engine leads to some nice looking visuals

It's designed with heavy use of multithreading to support large battles

I got docking to work and made a gif!

Here is an even more massive battle after some heavy code optimization, I won't embed it because it is unreasonably large

Sickly sickeningly sick.

No wait, that sounds bad.

This looks potentially awesome.

Also, WTF, fitting!  :)

New cinematic trailer is out!

It is a bit rough around the edges because I didn't have a AAA budget, but I finally got this trailer to feel right.

http://youtu.be/AuVc8TV7rLA

This video hopefully will help with the kickstarter I am planning soon. I'm also releasing some new features to the client in a patch later this month:

  • The game area has expanded beyond the limits of floating point precision
  • Added a large procedural universe to explore full of artwork that I drew
  • I plan to add a new gameplay mode that lets you fight procedural enemies through the galaxy to gain budget and unlock gear
  • Added the ability to access a galaxy map showing your location in the universe
  • Travel mode lets you move around the universe quickly and see the static artwork
  • Added the ability to select different turrets for your gun mounts
  • I will be adding 7 new ship hulls and some new AI enemies using those hulls
  • Added 4 new gun types and a new damage type
  • Kinetic damage is a new armor piercing bullet mechanic
  • Added half finished missiles launchers. They will self-reload until the reloading module is in the game
  • Added a docking animation that may or may not let you move between ships on release (I need to work out many network related bugs)
  • Updated some artwork for ugly modules
  • Added some new structure modules
  • Added another module category to the ship editor
  • Added some more multithreading that should drastically improve framerates on machines with more than 2 cores during large battles
  • Overhaul of ship AI to make enemies more challenging, less unfair, more intelligent and more diverse. The AI is no longer stateless which means they can remember things beyond the current animation frame
  • Added an uncountable number of changes and improvements behind the scenes that nobody will notice until the server exists

[Edit] I had to update the patch notes because I have been working on some stuff that I didn't originally think was going to be in the patch.

Okay, yet another post since I have a new playable version out that people need to try.

This one actually features a rogue-like gameplay mode where you can explore the galaxy and blow people up in order to increase your budget and unlock all of the new content I have added (new modules)

I want feedback if anyone does get around to playing it, I have been trying to put out a patch every day or so fixing and changing little things in response to feedback.

Thanks!

It is inspired by some classics like Escape Velocity and Star Control II which also weren't for everyone, I understand it is kinda targeting a niche market. Thanks for passing it along to your friend!

On a completely different note, I just updated the original post with my kickstarter link because that is happening now.

It has even more details about the project than I was able to post here, so check it out.
