Title: Garden of Colored Lights
Post by: Radial on November 05, 2008, 07:06:04 AM
Garden of Colored Lights

Garden of Colored Lights is a game that really defines the shmup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoot_'em_up) genera in my opinion. You start off in level one, and on each level you have four stages (seasons). All enemies have a moving part(s), by the way. You can totally customize your weapons in a tree-like form (you will get it when you play it) and, if I may, there are definitely lots of options to choose from. You can also customize your controls. There are seven levels, but I highly doubt even the hardest of the hard core could easily blast through them all. There is also a difficulty changer, I prefer medium. The game is very melodic and really generates its own soundtrack. Lol it gets very painful, I have only got to the second level's boss (pretty good)! Oh, before I forget this game also has weapon upgrading and life earning. The more you kill with one weapon the better it gets and upgrades. Some weapons that need to charge again after one shot won't charge beacuse you are shooting a different weapon. Lastly, don't forget that for creating a custom class would be best going to the last option (Custom class) and change that instead of messing with built-in things.

i love this game! one of my favorite shumps. i remember one day i was sitting around thinking about how rad it was and that i wished it could be on the gp2x. then like two days later http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,30,2499

get out of my head linely!

i absolutely love how the outlines of bullets and shit merge when they over lap. this game gives me asthetigasms

but ya, its fucking hard, i havent even gotten to thr first boss. my favorite weapons are the sunshower, eye of rectification, and the tooth of xom

Wow. This is really great. Kind of what i'm looking for in a shooter - nice colours, somewhat relaxing, but intense, nice customisation AND lots of music. Wonderful.

Is it new, or am I just out of the Shmup loop? Thanks, either way!

Well, this really isn't a new game at all. I found this a good while ago on shmup-dev.com. It definitely isn't main stream so I don't exactly think your out :P

I would have liked it if you could actually bloody aim your shots. But half of them miss because the particular damn orb that fires the weapon happened to positioned too much to the left.

Also, stacking weapons of the same type has no effect because when fired at once, their effectiveness decreases accordingly.

I'm pretty crap at shmups but this has been one of my favourites in the genre ever since it was released.

Looks nice, but I must admit I was disappointed it wasn't actually about a garden of coloured lights.

Tried it , but I'm not a fan of abstract shmups.

I've recorded a GoCL playthrough on punishment. YouTube playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=DE1A9B581F458100).
Also, there is a newer version here (http://garden.sourceforge.net/). GoCL v1.0.6 uses less CPU, but has a bug that doesn't let the player quit the game (you can kill it using Task Manager on WinXP).
