Title: Merrily Perily [Demo out now!]
Post by: JaJitsu on September 16, 2013, 09:27:26 AM
Hello everyone! I'm finally starting a new game project!

ABOUT:
Merrily Perily is a game about crisis. You play as Perry, a severely dehydrated man who stumbles into a remote village in search of help, but the inhabitants respond with strange detachment to your trouble. You may think that the nearby fountain is a safe means to quench your dire thirst, but you would soon find yourself in search of aid for a snake bite. And before you know it, you will be chased by bees, fending off bears, cursed by gypsies, and most likely on fire. Help Perry navigate the deadly peril he faces at every turn in Merrily Perily on a computer near you!

Merrily Perily Demo (http://squiddershins.com/files/merrily_perily_demo.zip)

We have all been working diligently on Merrily Perily, and a demo (http://squiddershins.com/files/merrily_perily_demo.zip) is now available! Please bear in mind two things when playing the demo:

-The demo includes a few crises, characters, and comedy.
-The demo does not yet include final SFX, all animations, sidequests, multiple endings, credits, cake, or a bug free experience.
-The demo is PC only at the moment, but we hope to have an HTML5 version up this weekend.

WEEK1:
This week I was focusing on getting the main animations done for the main character, Perry.
The background hasn't been worked on at all. I just wanted some sort of area to run around in.

This is awesome! I love the wobblyness of the art.

I really like the art style, and any game where the protagonist is a 'severely dehydrated man' is worth a go. Looking forward to updates!

Interesting premise and great style. Is this planned as a short game?

Yes. This is actually my senior project for school, and will need to be done in just 14 Weeks. If you knew exactly what to do you could probably finish the game in 5 minutes, but figuring out the puzzles will obviously increase the playtime. There are also multiple endings planned.

Thanks for the comments so far! This week I'm getting the main town painted. I'll post when I get some more done.

that's better. really though if you want to make the dehydration thing a thing, the physiological effects give a characteristic gaunt look and a sort of ever present lethargy in movement which could give your guy some physical character. he looks quite sprightly right now.

Post by: JaJitsu on September 19, 2013, 09:28:02 AM
I would love to do that, but doubt I'll have the time to do a separate run cycle for every crises in the game. It is a good suggestion though, I appreciate that.

oh. i am bad at reading words (actually i am fairly fucking exceptional at reading words i just lack the inclination to do so). he becomes not dehydrated fairly early on, i see now. Assalamu alaikum.

That's looking really nice, what program are you using to build the game?

The style is great, I feel like his feet are not giving the impression of movement though. And a simple shadow under the character might plant him in the ground a bit more.

I got the movement going in MMF2, but I might have another programmer make it in Game Maker.

I was just thinking about a shadow last night. Good suggestion! thank you.

EDIT: yes much better!

I've always had a lot of inspiration come from the art of Mother. Thanks!

WEEK 3:
This week I've continued painting backgrounds, which makes for a pretty boring dev log post. I really want to show off some cool gameplay stuff, but I need to get all these backgrounds painted before moving on to gameplay.

Here is a screenshot showing the gypsy vans! Red or blue, which would you choose?

Actually, sorry to be the downer here, but I like the concept art far more than the in game art (what a surprise). I feel like the guy in the game is a whole different person from the concept art. He just looks worried all the time. The concept art guy looks funny. Just my two cents.

Do I recognize a certain vampire there... :D

Very nice-looking stuff, I like the painting-ness of it all.

Don't worry about it! Even though it's high res art, the space is still really small for the main character, so I can't get him looking exactly like his concept page. We do want to put in profile pictures for the dialogue bits. I want to use that as an opportunity to get some funny pics, similar to the concept page. Thanks!

yes :]
Thank you and everyone else for the praise! This week i'm going to get close to getting the bulk of the game art done, and our programmer should be starting.

WEEK5/6 Last week I was mostly working on my portfolio/resume so I didn't do much for the game. The bulk of the painting is done for the game so now it's just a million little things to put in.

here is some stuff for dialogue:

The bulk of the art in the game is pretty much done! I just need to do a bunch of tiny things all throughout the game.
Here's the Abbey:

Hello everyone! Looks like I havn't posted...in....a month..
But that's okay because I've been working the whole time! A lot of work on game animations:

I've also been extremely busy with school since I graduate in about 3 weeks.
Another bit of big news is that me and Ryan have created a kickstarter for our game making company, Squiddershins (http://squiddershins.com/). The reason I am posting about it here is because our first stretch goal is for Merrily Perily! We have enough to make the game rad, but with a little more we can make the game slightly more rad! (that was a joke.) Check out the video below for more!
