Title: Forever (by NS3K) Post by: Nillo on September 30, 2013, 11:42:17 PM (http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq46/TheDimCloak/ForeverCast_zps45a8f107.png)
The last few days I've been playtesting a game that my buddy NessStar3000 is working on called Forever. Some of you may remember a similar project named Glowstone that he did a few years ago (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=16816.0), which was made in an earlier version of Game Maker. Unfortunately it was not possible to convert those old files to the new software, so he decided to make a new game instead of trying to remake Glowstone. (http://imageshack.us/a/img546/7018/b039.png) So what is Forever? It's an action role-playing game that puts you in the shoes of the confused wanderer Locke, who finds himself in a struggle against a group of bandits. Along the way, up to three other characters will be recruited, and you can choose to control any one of them in battle. The characters you do not control will fight automatically, but you can give them general tactics like telling them to fight offensively or defensively or to do nothing. (http://imageshack.us/a/img23/2015/xsgq.png) You can download a public demo of the game below. Right now only a small piece of the story is playable, but you can try the combat system and see what the first three characters look like. http://www.mediafire.com/download/ua93ll7h9wr8wxt/Forever+-+Public+Demo+U.zip NessStar3000 doesn't read the forum, but I talk to him often and I will forward any feedback you post here as soon as I can. Any comments are appreciated! Title: Re: Forever (by NS3K) Post by: dlan on October 01, 2013, 11:46:57 AM really nice! , I really like battle system that emulate the "tales of" style. The game is really well made, quite polished. Graphics or music wise, everything have the right mood.
About the combat, the dash system is a good replacement for a more classic parry system, my main grip is that since I have an azerty keyboard layout, it's quite hard to use with a good timing, but I suppose control layout customization is not the priority right now :) I also feel that the timeout after dash is a little too long About the special attack, it would be cool to have a sound indication when you don't have enough point to perform one, since the pace of battle is quite fast, I don't think about checking the hud. Also, it's quite annoying that enemies and allies can go offscreen, especially when an opponent have a ranged attack, I think I would prefer a system where the camera zoom in / out like in a fighting game. anyway, it's a really cool game, I haven't delve too much into the growth system, it seem to have some interesting possibilities. Title: Re: Forever (by NS3K) Post by: Nillo on October 01, 2013, 12:50:28 PM Thanks for the feedback! The reason why he's not implemented a zoom-in feature for the battles is because it would distort the sprites. Since the game uses pixel art instead of vector graphics, it would look ugly while zoomed. However, he says he's going to be careful in the future and make sure that the ranged attacks have sound cues so that the player will notice them when they're fired off-screen.
