Kitten Battle Dungeon!

Do you like cats?  Of course you do you!
Do you like dueling, fast paced platforming and exploring?

In Kitten Battle Dungeon we have taken the best cat-ology and put all of our collected knowledge and experiences together and are working on a game we hope to be fun and challenging.

As of right now we have a working engine, an established art style, and have a plan for how the game will play out.  Here is some proof that the engine is up and running, we've got some work ahead but we're off the a great start.

Come back for updates!

Hi I'm Matt.

Getting past all the generic stuff in the intro post I'm the level artist and level designer, I'm working with My friends Tadpol and Noxid.  I'm responsible for all the tiles and level arrangements/scripting.  I was GOING to do concept art but after looking at this Tad decided it would be best left to him.

Also haha I posted first!

Hello I do the programming

I make the things bip and bop around the screen.
Sometimes they don't bip. But I try to keep that to a minimum.

The engine is being written in C++ with the Allegro 2D graphics library. My dev environment is windows, so the game should at least run on that.

Hi, I drew the cats, animated the cats and drew the cats more!

I'm responsible for the character designs and animations, concept art, and I also made the lil leaves falling there.

The art style looks really familiar (not a bad thing; it feels like I've seen this art style somewhere)
Anyway, seems interesting. I'll follow its progress

It's so easy to overlook something like this when you're quickly browsing through a list of names.
Totally following

Olli: The main character is going through a bit of a design change to become more expressive and more easily animated.  We figured it was a strength.

Cup of Joe: I just kinda used my own logic while making these tiles and whatever they look like is just what I decided looked good after hours of trying out things.  It's probably true that someone else has had the same thought process.  Thanks for complimenting it, I've been trying.

DarkWanderer: When browsing these forums before I've seen threads with titles that seemed uninteresting that ended up being for really cool threads.  The title is catchy and rolls off the tongue so I hope that brings a few people by.

Oh dear, bed time for me.

We have a mostly finished design for a town.  We've left a few spots blank in case they need something later.  Now I gotta start making it.

As said before, I'm Tad, and I'm doing most of the artwork for our project.

The character designs, area concepts, and animations are all where I'm involved basically.

Kitty Battle Dungeon is our first attempt at an actual game, so we're all working to make something unique, fun, and interesting.

For me, that means making everything full of personality, meaning this topic as well, so Here's the first of many "daily doodles".

I think it wants some.

"Returning things is what a hero does, right?"

Noxid improved the way the character moves and we're pretty satisfied with how much fun moving around has gotten.
Nox has also been working on speech-bubbles recently so we can write as many cat-related puns as humanly possible!

Matt is pumping out tiles as well as generally deciding how we're going to do story things and such.

I on the other hand am getting to work on animations for our feline hero. His new sprites are bigger and easier to read on screen and he's got more "oomph" in his movements.
We'll try to give a preview of them as soon as we can.

So yeah, we're pretty busy here with all this cat stuff.

Hey guys.

So if you've noticed a lack of posting here it's been a short combination of things.  Tad has some personal business to take care of and should be back soon, and the rest of us have finished our breaks and are back in school.  After this first week we should have a good work schedule figured out now.

On the note of the town I mentioned I was making tiles on my last post.  I struggled with that a lot more than I thought I would.  Every design I mead for the houses was boring and looked out of place.  So I finally took the time to hop on Google Images and get some better references.  After words I went into trusty mspaint during my break and threw together a small house.

Looks a little bit like Scribblenauts to me.  But aside from that I'm happy with constructing houses in that manner and they can be made dynamic and modular and all that other cool stuff.  Once I get my schedule in tact I'll be sure to post some progress on the tileset.

Heyo o/
I've been getting some behind-the-scenes work done to make things easier for the other guys to put their content into the engine, but something interesting I can show off is a bit of progress on speech bubbles

They're a bit primitive at the moment but they can resize themselves to accomodate different text and follow the thing they're coming from. The graphics are just some testing sprites I threw together, nothing final.

there's also more traditonal dialogue boxes too, of course.

What's up.  Sorry for a lack of updates.  We've had a slight change of heart about the design of the main character and Tad decided to redo a lot of his animations.  He should now pop more on the screen and be easier to animate overall.

With that out of the way there's some more stuff to share.  I've been doing a lot of technical art at the moment like particles and UI. I just finished making a rough for the user interface.

I'll come back to that later and give it some more refining features.  By the look of things I'll also be making more pretty looking text boxes and designing the pause menu today and tomorrow.

I've got some nice concept art done by tad here who's butt I'm kicking about the lack of doodles.  If you remember the town I talked about a few posts ago, (which in retrospect is weeks) he's doing some paints to get a good visual style for it going since it's such an important game location.

I'd also like to apologize about the lack of updates recently.  We've been moving a bit slower than I'd like and are getting back on track now.  We are looking into a musician at the moment but won't post much on the subject until we are sure things are going to pan out.

I'd like to thank any musicians who've asked to be a part of our project, but at the moment we can't afford to pay anyone and would rather work with someone we know and not pay them then someone we don't know and not pay them.  It's really heartwarming to see people with so much faith in this project already.

Payment is always something that can worked out later, of course. There are ways a composer can still make money from the music like selling the OST and whatnot!

While I understand that,it's more convenient to see if something can't be worked out with someone I know personally.  Which is just an unfortunate truth because I can see there is a surplus of musicians here on tigsource compared to those who need them.

I have mixed feelings about the new sprite. The original is a lot cuter while the new one moves so much that it makes me expect the game will be really action packed. Hopefully it will be or else it might feel a bit out of place.

The added ears movement is a nice touch, but the way the old sprite used to hold it's sword while running/jumping was quite cool.

Even though you haven't revealed much about your plans for the game yet, it's still a really interesting project. Thanks for cats!

The new sprite will also have a set of frames for each of the weapons, but for now he's just done the base unarmed set.

Hey friends, I'm here with some goodies.

First off some new concept doodles:

Hopefully we find a way to put in the swimsuit.

Also, we're going to be putting together another demo to show off the new sprites and more of an atmosphere. We plan to get it out sometime in the future, you can see how the new sprites look in game then.

Welp, Matt's cracking his whip again, back to work it seems!

I love the art style :D One thing concerns me is that the style of the backgrounds don't match the characters. The backgrounds are very detailed and colorful (looks like at least 4 colors for a brick). The characters, while still beautifully drawn, are single colors (ie: no detail on same-color areas).

Are the characters temporary and will receive more color detail in the future? Or is this the art style for the game?

Also, wow, extreme backflip XD

Title: Re: Kitten Battle Dungeon
Post by: HyMyNameIsMatt on February 28, 2014, 01:01:04 PM
That background is some old art, left behind from KBD's earlier days .  The background will be a lot more simple to not get in the way of the action.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey.

Kitten Battle Dungeon is undergoing some aesthetic changes and possibly some gameplay changes.  Those need to be discussed as a group more and we'll have more to say on that at a later point.

(http://i.imgur.com/awki9W9.png) (http://imgur.com/awki9W9)

Outlines are coming in because at the moment it takes too long for me to make assets and this takes way less iterations per asset.  Also because the character is black and outlining them will not restrict our color pallets as much.  We hit a bit of a road bump recently but are trying to get back on track.  The goal at the moment is to make a nicely polished sample of gameplay at some point.  No promises on when, we tried rushing and were not happy with the result.  We wanna show something that will give you an idea of the game's focus.

Also to break all this formal talk Dark Souls 2 isn't coming out for PC for another 20 days and it makes me sad.  Tad already has it on his PS3 and I'm not happy about it.  :-X

Kitten Battle Dungeon will be split into 2 halves, above and below ground.  Currently we are trying to get a feel for these places tonally so I got together the minimum tiles required to assemble both of those environments.  Above is a little miniature of those tiles assembled with a color for background.

Also since Noxid has made a lot of the base game, he is making a small experimental one within engine to see what kind of features we could use in the rest of the game.  Ambient set pieces was a focus and as a result we got these particle ass cool ass fireflies.

Tad's been on concept art duties as well as some animation.  Don't wanna bring up a lot of it but I'll be super vague with this:

Take care.

Thanks, I feel like a better artist since I started working on this.

Speaking of game play I gotta make a post on an aspect of dungeon design we came up with but don't have time to make the representative images atm.  Will have to do that later.

So we haven't posted in forever.  The game didn't die, we ran into some issues with our design vs. our time budget and have been juggling game play art and structure for some time.  It's still a little shaky at the moment but I believe we have something manageable down that's satisfying to play.  I figured in the mean time I'd upload a bit of the tile art I've been working on so I can happily say we have our visual style down and that the process of actually making tiles is more than half finished.  Sorry to anyone that's wanted to hear about our progress, but no one wanted to post a bunch of shaky ideas in the thread.
