Title: Darkest Dungeon - An RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring! Post by: Tranicos on February 10, 2014, 04:14:54 PM Hi everyone,
Darkest Dungeon is a gothic horror RPG about the human elements of dungeon crawling. Players manage a roster of heroes, grouping them up in parties of four and sending them down into dungeons to explore the unknown. (http://www.redhookgames.com/media/GIFs/WarrensWalking.gif) The real hook of the game is the Affliction System - heroes respond to the stresses of adventuring and their resulting mental state creates gameplay challenges to overcome. (http://www.redhookgames.com/media/GIFs/Fearful.gif) Combat is turn-based, side-on, where tactical considerations are key. The ran (http://www.redhookgames.com/media/GIFs/Grapeshot.gif) Exploration is roguelike, going from room to room via hallways. Interesting curios, events, hazards, and ambushes occur in the halls. Periodically, players will want to CAMP. While camping, you eat, use camping skills, and the characters interact. The use of skills is something we are calling "Tactical Camping" because it uses an action point system and which skills you use has a lot to do with current tactical situation. (http://www.redhookgames.com/media/GIFs/Camping.gif) In between quests, you spend time in town. Aside from the typical recruiting and upgrading heroes, you must attend to the heroes' mental needs. Perhaps a jaunt around the pub is just what the doctor ordered? Or maybe quiet contemplation at the Abbey? What you choose affects that heroes' quirks and status...and may lead to unexpected side effects. (http://www.redhookgames.com/media/screenshots/Town_sm.jpg) Oh yeah, we are Kickstarting as of today. Fingers crossed! We have lots to do, but are encouraged by the support so far. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460250988/darkest-dungeon-by-red-hook-studios --Tyler Sigman (@tylersigman) Red Hook Games http://www.darkestdungeon.com Title: Re: Darkest Dungeon - An RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring! Post by: Christian on February 10, 2014, 07:07:43 PM I think I had the first article up at the Kickstarter launch :)
It was my most anticipated campaign next to Rain World and Path of Shadows Atmosphere, tone, unique art styles have always appealed to me, sometimes even more so than a game's actual gameplay and story. I love being immersed in an atmospheric world and every screenshot of Darkest Dungeon just oozes tension and ominous atmosphere. Even better, it looks like it has the gameplay and depth to complement that haunting unsettling atmosphere. "The Road" of dungeon crawlers indeed Title: Re: Darkest Dungeon - An RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring! I'll get this!(and bonus points for the Dune quotes ^^) Title: Re: Darkest Dungeon - An RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring! Post by: eobet on February 11, 2014, 04:07:52 AM Over $51,000 already in the first day?!? Tell us your secrets. :) I saw it on the NeoGAF forums, clicked the link, saw the first gif and I was sold (same for the friend I sent the link to). The art has a consistent, high quality, atmospheric even down to the UI elements, and the design seems to equal that in every way. It offers something familiar (dungeon romping) with a new twist (the "flat" design). It feels like I can instantly take in what the entire game is about from a single screenshot, which is quite a feat and makes it very approachable! It seems to be a trend in indie gaming today to remix a lot of stuff, which is great. Without stretching it too much, I see the setup from Rogue, game flow from Sword & Poker, the visual style from The Dark Spire, inventory and skills from World of Warcraft (or any MMO really) and combat from Mega Man Battle Network (sort of, but I bet there's a better likeness to be found in some obscure JRPG). Oh, and that is not a criticism, but rather, I think the dream of all of us to be able to cherry pick what we liked best from our favorite games and mix them together into something new. Also, it plays into the recent trend of randomized worlds, sandbox gameplay, shorter sessions and some percistency...
