Title: Unholy Avenger (Dead Viking Side-scroller) Post by: Oxeren on April 10, 2014, 10:26:12 AM (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21179821/Splash710.jpg)
Unholy Avenger is a fast-paced side-scroller about undead viking on his journey to bring vengeance unto the intruders, who desecrated lands of his ancestors. Gameplay includes slaughtering puny humans, casting powerful spells and upgrading your axe and beard! The game is being developed in Flash. Team consists of me. Gameplay video (kinda outdated): http://youtu.be/5Kb4mjK5JHw (http://youtu.be/5Kb4mjK5JHw) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21179821/Screenshot1_710.jpg) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21179821/Screenshot2_710.jpg) Some viking metal soundtrack! https://soundcloud.com/oxeren/avenger-rises (https://soundcloud.com/oxeren/avenger-rises) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/21179821/UAGif.gif) Title: Re: Unholy Avenger (Dead Viking Side-scroller) Post by: Dooleus on April 10, 2014, 10:35:01 AM Great art! I watched the gameplay video and it looks like fun, but your sound and music could be better IMO. I think some retro 8bit SFX and 16bit general MIDI-style music would match the art style better.
Looking forward to seeing how this comes out! Title: Re: Unholy Avenger (Dead Viking Side-scroller) Post by: James Edward Smith on April 10, 2014, 11:35:27 AM Meh, I don't think the perceived "tech era" of all elements of a game necessarily have to match. It's one thing if you are intentionally trying to create a demake, or a retro game that looks like it would run on a specific system, but just because something has sprite graphics, doesn't mean it's trying to emulate a game on an old console.
Look at Super Meat Boy; there is a game that is a game that actually IS trying to recreate the experience of older games and yet it still doesn't even have sprite graphics (most of the time) and doesn't have 8 or 16 bit system chiptunes for it's music either (except in the bonus levels that are supposed to seem like you are literally playing them on an old system). Things don't always have to follow a set formula to be artistically valid. A friend of mine brings this up all the time in regards to fantasy setting RPGs so frequently using orchestral scores with choir vocals. Why is this so prevalent? It's not like medieval times even had orchestras, if the point was to be setting/era appropriate, why isn't everything lutes and flutes and folk singing? I actually really like how Dwarf Fortress actually has just rambling lute music as its only score. At least it's believable for its setting. The point is, use what ever music you feel creates the experience you are going for, there are no set rules. I think heavy metal is really appropriate here because an undead viking rampage sounds like something a metal song would be about. Case in point, The Sword's song "How Heavy this Axe". I mean, I wasn't actually going for any kind of retro aesthetic. "Trixel" graphics weren't used in old games anyway, though it is inspired by pixel art.

I presume that player will spend only a little amount of time in the menus, so the theme is quite short and simple for now.
