Title: Re: Band of Drones turn based squad strategy Post by: Quicksand-S on June 05, 2014, 03:42:51 PM I don't know if you did anything wrong. In my case, I actually planned on testing the game a few days ago but got distracted by other things. It might be a good idea to tell people what sort of game it is, though.
-The title-screen could really use some music, and many some confirmation sounds for the menus. -In menus, the fullscreen display area doesn't fit my screen nicely and sticks to the top of the screen rather than being vertically centered, so there's a huge space underneath. -In gameplay, the toolbar sort of area is in that bottom area but there's empty space beside it. I just don't like empty spaces like that. -The interface looks pretty nice. The various pages are very nicely made. -It's nice to have tutorial messages, but I wish I could click anywhere rather than having to click the check mark. Even better would be a "Don't show any more tutorial messages" option at the bottom of each tutorial window. -I kept wishing I could use normal strategy game controls, right-clicking on a space to move or on an enemy to attack. Having to use a menu or hotkeys doesn't feel as comfortable to me. It would also be nice if I could cancel actions or unselect units without having to press a button on the interface. -I didn't really like that my movement was so limited, but I guess it works. I kept thinking of it more like Civilization, where if my drone can't travel the entire distance in one turn, they'll continue during the next one (unless confronted by an enemy). It would be kinda nice if that was an option here, but maybe there are issues with that way of doing things. -I had no idea what to do with the things dead enemy drones dropped. Can I pick them up somehow? -The map of level 1 is a strange size. At a 1920x1080 resolution, it requires a tiny bit of horizontal scrolling. I guess there are other resolutions to keep in mind, but I found it strange to have to scroll such a small amount. -The interface when a unit is selected has a "Cancel" option. When looking for a way to deselect my unit, I avoided it for a while before realizing that it didn't actually cancel anything. It might be a good idea to change the wording. -I like most of the graphics but I feel like, even though it's grid-based, the ground could look a little less square. "Bug": Starting the mission, it faded to black nicely and then flickered the mission-select screen or something before the actual game "playground" appeared. Bug? My drone was spotted and it took about ten seconds before the enemy that had spotted it actually did anything, so I just had to sit there wondering if the game was broken. Bug? Path-finding sometimes took strange routes for no reason. In the first level, trying to make my robot go up and to the left, it took any opportunity it could to go left, even if it would have to move right again after that. Maybe it was trying to take cover? Bug? If I'm aiming my weapon and press M, the "laser sight" stays on-screen while I'm planning my move. The game got a bit boring halfway through the first level, when I realized I still had so many drones to destroy. Maybe the levels are too big, or too limited (every path feels the same as every other one). I like the music, the drone sprites, the sounds and the basic gameplay. I even found the combat pretty satisfying, even though it's turn-based. Nice work so far.
