Title: Enterchained Beta - coop gladiatorial combat game
Post by: dylanbevis on June 29, 2014, 08:53:25 PM
Hi Everyone,

Enterchained is a game myself and two others worked on at a 48hr Game Jam and we've spent a few weeks adding some extra content and fixing up little things here and there. We've just formed a new studio and we're planning on releasing it as a free download to help get our name out there.

So you know what your getting into it's coop action combat game where you play as two gladiators chained together - Survive for as long as you can to get high-scores and unlock new gear.

It's best played as a coop game with controllers but it has full support for single-player with both keyboard and controllers.

And here's some quick gameplay footage:

We're happy for any general feedback but if you have any thoughts on the following areas that would be greatly appreciated:

- Loot progression, did you find the challenges to get new items too easy or hard? Would you be likely to come back to unlock all the items?
- Did you unlock hard mode and if so how long did it take you?
- We've avoided having any explicit tutorials in the game, was there anything you found confusing or particularly unclear?

You can download it here:

The game looks pretty cool. I love the style.

The gameplay didn't draw me in. I was playing singleplayer, so that probably didn't help. My main issue, though, has little to do with that. I just found the combat overly simplistic.

-I don't like being forced to complete an execution once it's started (as I watch my teammate getting killed), and I hate how long it takes (far too many hits). The sound really grated on my ears as well (using headphones).

-Throwing my sword seems far more effective than actually fighting, which is a bit weird.

-I really wish there were attack options. One type of slash gets old quickly.

-The combat is too easy on a basic level. Throwing larger numbers of enemies at me doesn't seem like it should be the only way that the challenge increases. How about enemies using their shields? Attacks requiring timing or else you leave yourself open?

-Speaking of timing, the incredibly long delay after swinging the sword was a bit irritating to me. If you want a long delay, I think it'd be better if the animation was longer as well. Otherwise it looks like the soldier is ready to attack again even though he isn't.

-I played six rounds and spent probably 85% of that time with large groups of enemies on the ground waiting to be executed. Maybe they should get up faster. That, combined with faster executions, could make the combat feel more energetic.

-I realize that co-op might be your focus, but it would be nice if the AI took hints from me. For example, if I run sideways and pull on the chain, maybe there should be a chance that my teammate will run sideways with me and we can try that maneuver in your first GIF.

Bugs/Weirdness:

-If I choose to play with a controller, the keyboard button for throwing the sword still works (I was curious :shrug2:). I think that the only "bug" I noticed, though, which is pretty good.

I know I'm mostly listing negatives, but for a game developed quickly, it's great. It works well, look really good and has a fairly interesting idea at its core.

Hi Quicksand-S

Thanks for such a thorough breakdown of your thoughts, its was quite helpful and we're looking at address some of your points (those which are within the scope of how long we want to spend on this project anyway).

I got the impression from your post you quit before died and/or didn't get to the gear system is that correct?

Thanks for you help!

Gear system? Yeah, I must've quit before that. I may have played longer in co-op mode, but singleplayer just wasn't engaging enough for me to continue. I'm glad other gear exists, though. It might be a good idea to show that element, even in a limited capacity, earlier on. I don't know.
