Title: M.U.L.E. Fanproject [looking for help]
Post by: data2009 on January 15, 2009, 05:51:40 AM
Hello to any MULE-fans still out there,

we are a small team (2 developers, 1 artist) who are attempting to recode the C-64/Atari-classic as a fanproject from scratch.
The goal is to make MULE playable with 4 players over the internet (no AI yet).
We have accomplished the basic gameplay and internet connection and currently are about to finish an early, rough alpha-version.

Therefore we are looking for some testers who know and have played the original and would like to help us testing the alpha-version, with the focus on how to adapt certain game mechanics to be fun over network.

If the game will finally be released, it will be of course non-commercial and the code will be opensourced.

If anyone seriuosly interested to play some multiplayer testgames with our alpha-version and help us by giving feedback please write an email to
firemail(AT)free-media.org
or post any questions here in the thread.

Thanks + Greetings, data2009.

Just registered here to make a comment on Spelunky and am pleasantly surprised to find this.

I've played a lot of M.U.L.E. on both C64 and Atari and was pretty active with http://atarimule.neotechgaming.com/, which is a great way to play M.U.L.E. but I would certainly love a better way.

I just wonder how close are you going to make it to the originals, and which one will it be more like? I was also wondering if you plan any improvements.

I think you know about the second one at least, but here are two sites that might be of use:

I'll go ahead and send an email now. Thanks and good luck.

Hello kenoh,

The two sites you mentioned are great resources, which help a lot in the process,
while atarimule is probably the best way to play the original over the net.

As for our project, we try to base the remake closely on the original,
while having built in some options (that need to be tested either way) to vary the game.

The goal for the first alpha-testers is to decide which game-variants for the network-mode are fun to play and which parts need to get modified for beta-release (of course the overall feedback is also of great use at this stage).

So thanks for your reply, and I'll check for your mail.

Something very similar has been done before : Space HoRSE (http://pc.ign.com/objects/480/480721.html)

However, I'm sure there's room for improvement. I'm usually not one to complain about art, but in Space Horse it's pretty crummy. I'd much rather have polished, lo-fi graphics (pixel art, low-poly models) rather than really ridiculous-looking prerendered stuff. I played a demo years ago and it didn't really seem to be anything but a facelift of the original.

I would be willing to help in any testing, I have played the Atari version and the NES version *shudder*

@nihilocrat:
Yes, we've seen SpaceHorse, and its a good game at his own.
As for your suggestion for a "lo-fi-version", be surprised...

@TheBlackMask:
Please write me an email and tell me where you located at (that info helps choosing a group of 4 players which roughly live in the same timezone).
