Title: Kratora (WIP) - The life of a civilization Post by: Median on September 16, 2014, 12:36:55 PM Description
In Kratora you macro-manage your space-faring civilization as you expand across the galaxy, gaining new knowledge along the way. You build structures on planets. Structures to mine resources, research new technologies, generate power and inhabitants. Gameplay You start out with your civilization on your own home planet. You can place constructions such as cities, matter extractors (such as mines, natural gas collectors, etc.), power plants and research facilities. There are (currently) 6 different resources in the game:
The end game is about reaching a 3 on the Kardashev scale, which means having access to the entire energy output of the galaxy. I'm also thinking about maybe including some form of combat against another civilization trying to achieve the same goal as you. Could be fun :P Pictures! Title: Re: Perium Post by: Median on September 17, 2014, 06:27:39 AM I have no idea how this will work, but I'm loving the zoom and sun! Thanks! :) I've updated the rendering of the stars a bit, to remove some the jitter in the line rendering:(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/star_4.gif) Implemented so that planets now can have textures: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/texture%20test.gif) Which (with a different texture) adds a bit of flavor to the otherwise pretty uniform planets: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/planet_collage.png) Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: Median on September 18, 2014, 09:18:21 AM First off, I've made the icons for the matter resources:
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-18_19-09-37.png) (note: I'm a programmer = programmer art :shrug2:) Secondly, progress has been made on the galaxy generation algorithm. Spiral galaxies ftw :handmetalR: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/galaxy.png) And lastly, constructions can now be placed on planets: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-18_19-10-39.png) Well, construction-blobs until I make some crappy programmer art :) Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: nox on September 18, 2014, 10:02:49 AM You call it programmer art, but I think it's totally cool. Also, the gameplay and premise sound sweet, and I look forward to seeing how it's all going to come together. It's reminding me a lot of Reus right now.

Thanks man :) Reus is on my "to play" list (a victim of Steam summer sale), but I have only heard praise about it. Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: Median on September 19, 2014, 01:56:29 PM So today has been kinda slow.
Building on planets! (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/building_buildings.gif) They don't quite work correctly yet. The origin of the building is at the corner. This should be moved to somewhere center + I should calculate the slope where the constructions are, but that will come later. And I finished the rest of the icons for the resources: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-19_15-33-45.png) I couldn't really decide how the 'souls' icon should look (the cyan one), but settled on this design as it looks kinda like an egg or something. I dunno... Here is a bonus gif of how the art style was BEFORE I decided to change it to a more 'childish' look: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/star.gif) Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: rj™ on September 19, 2014, 01:57:55 PM (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/star_4.gif) hnnnnn Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: Low_Chance on September 19, 2014, 02:23:27 PM Okay, so your game is really cool to look at, BUT
every time I scroll past this thread, my brain parses it as "perineum" and I think this is a game about taints. Just saying. Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: rj™ on September 19, 2014, 02:28:18 PM i admit to the same thing

Just saying. Well, that was not my intention :-[, thanks for the heads up. That could be really embarrassing later on... Changed name to something different, WIP. Do you guys have any suggestions for names? Title: Re: Perium - The life of a civilization Post by: surt on September 19, 2014, 03:45:36 PM every time I scroll past this thread, my brain parses it as "perineum" and I think this is a game about taints. Quite appropriate given this: A star: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/star_4.gif) Title: Re: Kratora (WIP) - The life of a civilization Post by: Median on September 23, 2014, 12:01:35 PM every time I scroll past this thread, my brain parses it as "perineum" and I think this is a game about taints. Quite appropriate given this: A star: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/star_4.gif) I finally finished coding the "info UI" as I designed in the mock up. Hard coding UI elements is a bitch. I'm not quite happy with the yellow I'm using for the energy, the contrast isn't high enough. I've still got work to do on designing and coding some kind of build menu for placing constructions on planets. Objects now have names! As with a lot of other things, I generate them randomly. They have a random length between 4 and 12. For each letter, it chooses a random vowel or consonant, with at 38% chance for a consonant. This ratio was determined by counting the composition of a lot of other real names. That way they kinda looks like real names. This method mostly generates unpronounceable names (but also cool ones sometimes!), but that is not a problem. My theory is, that even though the names are unpronounceable, they will still be memorable by the player and therefor serve as a kind of "signature" for that celestial body. Lastly planets now have different kind of scaling for their solid, liquid and gas layer, based on what kind of percentage they make up of the total mass. Visually this means that you can see the relative size of the different layers, and will make it easier for the player to decide which kind of miners/extractors to build (solid, liquid or gas based). Here some planets: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-23_21-22-59.png) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-23_21-23-19.png) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-23_21-23-53.png) And a planet with some "moons": (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2621700/Homebrewed%20gifs/Game%20things/Mezer_09-23_21-51-20.png) |
