Title: Unnamed Colorful Space Shooter [First GIFs]
Post by: Matthew Rayfield on November 08, 2014, 03:52:51 PM
I've been slowly working on a point-and-click adventure game type thing...

But while I wasn't making progress on that, I started tinkering around with a little Javascript particle engine I made the beginnings of a while back. This was the first thing it did:

Now, quite some months after making that. I thought I might add a model editing feature. Made a super simple one and did this little guy:

I kind of liked that, and started to think I could use this particle engine for a game. So I beefed up the editor some more and made a couple models to get me going:

With that, I put together a little proof-of-concept type thing:

It's totally not playable (you can move up and down and shoot), but I wanted to get a better visual feel and work out some of the technical stuff. Final game will not constantly spin the camera :biglaff:

So that's where I'm at!

I have a few ideas for where I want to take it. One thing I've taken some inspiration from is Einhander, which I only played a little bit of when I was younger. But for whatever reason, it left an impression on me.

I also just played through, and loved, Kero Blaster. So some ideas from that are bouncing around my head as well.  :cavestory:

More to come... Thanks for looking!

Interested to hear any thoughts  :)

I've found the graphical concept very interesting and original indeed.
I think the next step now is to find THE game concept that will truly make it valuable. :)

I agree-- can't wait to see enemies exploding into hundreds of spheres in all directions!

Thanks all!

Definitely agree! Real game play is the next step.

One concept I'm thinking on is the camera positioning thing. Having parts of levels play like a traditional side scrolling space shooter, and then having the camera swing behind you and getting more of a Space Harrier feel. Perhaps some directional changes too, going down into pits, up elevators, etc.

Destruction will be looking rad! :)

SPHEROXELS RULE!
This looks so dope man, I'm sure there is some sort of witch craft going on with that javascript.
