Title: Rise Up - Work In Progress
Post by: I_smell on February 08, 2009, 11:59:42 AM
PLAY IT (http://spamtheweb.com/ul/upload/080209/74560_Rising.php)

So I made a small game recently, mostly an experiment, called Mighty Tower (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4496.0). One of the reviews for the game got me thinking. It was a negative review:

cliché, but nice try 1: music sucks 2: why does the screen move upwarsds automaticly, use lava orsomething...

And I thought yeah this guy's right. It doesn't make sense. It gave me an idea to make a game where something is rising.

I've made 10 levels so far and I like it. If you've got any suggestions for what aesthetic I should make this in, any kind of small plot, any new mechanics I should add, shout it. Or should I be a total dick an leave the graphics as they are?
I'm still deciding what to do with it.

GRRR WALL-JUMPING IS SO HARD.

Nice game, though, the graphics are really smooth, and I love the core mechanic of 'riding the tide'. I was going to say change the graphics at first, but after playing it, the artsyness of it is a bit too slick to resist. :)

I like the graphics, but the wall-jumping is much harder than it should be.

I got to the level with the space bar image up at the corner and getting up the tunnel fast enough seemed more about luck than anything.

Did you get stuck at the top of it, or did you have trouble entering it from the bottom?

If it's a problem at the top, then that's a level design issue. The gap you have to jump through was too small, but I've fixed it now.
If it was a problem from the bottom, then that could be an issue with the controls; I might have to make moving left and right more accurate.

You know what's neat? The way the player character sometimes rotates through 90 degrees after a wall jump, then keeps moving as if nothing happened. I really like this.  :D

I think if you keep these visuals, the key and lock could stand to fit better. Perhaps simple black silhouettes would work well?

There are a couple of (physics?) issues with the player handling. One is that while sliding down thin chimneys, the player character tilts awkwardly to one side instead of staying aligned with the walls. The other issue I noticed is that sometimes the player character spins and pops rather abruptly when hitting walls- it might be 'correct,' but it looks a little glitchy.

I like how simple the game is. It's appealingly clean looking, too. I think once you polish it up it'll be a pretty nice game.

I love it. You should change the jumping sound though, since you hear it so often something less annoying could be better.

I enjoyed this too; It reminded me a bit of Meat Boy, only a bit more frantic. The wall-jumping is actually quite easy, too, once you realise you don't have to push against a wall to jump off it; just press Up when you're near it.
