Title: Victorian Bushfires :(
Post by: ParaboL on February 08, 2009, 07:20:49 PM
I'm not sure how many fellow TIG-ers are Australian/Victorian, but I want to give my thanks to the men and women fighting the fires, and my condolences to those directly affected. I have never seen anything like this in my life time, and it has now completely dwarfed the tragedy of Ash Wednesday I heard about as a kid.

I was wondering if anybody would be talking about this on Tigsource. The fires came within 5km of my house, it was pretty scary. But in the end I was a lot luckier than many people, and didn't suffer any real damage from them.

One thing really striking is how generous people have been who were not affected by the fires themselves. The stockpiles of donated clothes and items were literally overflowing, and the money donations are apparently really big as well. My friend's mother came up to me at school today and gave me some pasta and sauce for dinner. It was really nice but also kind of embarassing because I don't feel like I need it as much as many other people.

Ah, Chutup, I was hoping you were alright! Remembered from somewhere you were a Victorian, and hoped you were city-side rather than rural. Five Kilometers? Very lucky. Thank goodness. Hope you and those you know manage to stay safe and well.

It really is an awful situation. To me, the amount of damage is unimaginable. Again, condolences and best wishes to any who have befallen this misfortune.

Made me pretty sad to see it on the news, it's in the main headlines over here in England at the moment. The Australian Prime Minister seems like a nice guy, too.

Yeah, it's major depressing, and it's getting worse each day.

I have the Sunday Telegraph with the front title saying "14 killed in blazes".. it is now at 181. Truly shocking the amount of life lost, there has been alot of support for the victims, with millions being raised, which is atleast some encouraging news.

I keep hearing headlines about a "Mass murder"- quite shocking, to say the least. My sincerest wishes go out to everyone suffering from this tragedy.

Spoilers: turns out he isn't. More likely he's celebrating the fact the media is distracted from his desire to piss $42billion down the drain.

Yeah they were about 5km from my place too. I've spent the last couple of nights at a friend's house cause my parents are still flat out trying to control some of the fires that are still going (they are in the fire brigade).

I think the monetary donations are over $32million by now, and there are lots of clothes and stuff being donated too.

That mass murder thing is about the fact that quite a few of the fires were deliberately lit, which... sucks.

And apparently Kevin Rudd is kinda short (my mum got to shake hands with him).

Heard about this on the news, its just terrible. I can't imagine the kind of person that would purposefully set off such events.

Absolutely horrific situation, and I can't say I'm exited by the news from Canadian scientists that global warming contributed, and will make these more likely in the future.

And the thought of arson is even worse.  :wtf: :'(
