Title: Dream Hoppin' Post by: TOM SENNETT on February 12, 2009, 12:56:39 PM So I decided to try my hand at Flash, and ended up making a game I'm quite pleased with. I'm polishing it up for a wide release, in what will be my first commerical enterprise in game making.:handmoneyR:
SO. I know we've got some dudes who know about Flash here, as well as some dudes who know about games in general. I'm looking for feedback regarding any potential technical oversights that might come out of my newness to Flash - I don't know a damn thing about security or efficiency or anything. It runs fine for me and that's all I've got. So if you notice something like that, let me know. And of course, I'm trying to figure out if the game's any fun! So even if you don't know anything about Flizzash, you can still contribute meaningful input! (i.e. "this game = lame") (http://coolmoose.net/games/screens/dh/screen1.gif) To the point -> . This is a simple game where you jump over things. Charge jumps with the spacebar. The music is a song by Duke Ellington called "Flaming Youth". It's in the public domain. That's really all there is to it, give it a try! (http://coolmoose.net/games/flash/dh.html) If you feel like it. I'm not going to pressure you to do anything you don't want to, man. Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: The-Imp on February 12, 2009, 01:02:47 PM Duke Ellington? I'm going to enjoy this.
On the leader board, with a terrible score... Twas fun. Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: valkrin on February 12, 2009, 04:42:29 PM Its fun and a little addictive. I like it. However I got annoyed with having to wait for the high scores every time I died, just so I could try again. It would be better if you had a quit option and when the player decides to quit then you can show the leader board. Just my two cents. Good work, keep it up!

I second this.Have you thought about including some sort of ballistics-arc, so you can gauge where you're going to land? I second this.I third this. other than that, this is one cool little game. overcharging my jump has got to be one of the funniests things that happened to me while playing a video game. Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: sereneworx on February 12, 2009, 06:28:26 PM hahah, Moby Dick. Awesome.
Enjoyable distraction, I love the minimal art. Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: tylerjhutchison on February 12, 2009, 08:51:41 PM hahah, Moby Dick. Awesome. Enjoyable distraction, I love the minimal art. I second this. The art is amazing and tons of fun. I love watching him land and flip over. The little dust clouds are marvelous. The Duke Ellington music is perfect for a surreal walk on the moon as a tiny face ball with legs. I am not sure how I feel about having a ballistic arc... it might take some of the insane fun out of the game. But then again you could also include overhead objects to dodge... moons, planets, satellites, pizza slices.... the kind of things one is likely to find floating in space. Maybe including variable terrain height could could be fun too. After maybe the seventh or 8th jump just when people are starting to get the hang of things... start tilting everything downhill... or uphill... or ROLLER COASTER. Insanity ensues. Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: TOM SENNETT on February 12, 2009, 09:43:18 PM The people have spoken. I put in a post-death choice between submitting a score and going back to the start. Also there is a button on the title screen to just view the high scores. Good ideas guys. It's always the no-brainer stuff like that that requires actual players to find.
Interesting suggestions here! On the subject of projecting your trajectory: The only feedback for planning jumps is the character squashing - I did this to raise the challenge and to emphasize finding a groove with your jumping. To compensate for the imprecision, the obstacles are pretty simple. I'm pretty happy with how this is balanced right now, but the game could still use more testing, so who knows. And that is a tempting prospect tyler (variable terrain), however my Flash skills aren't at the appropriate level to pull it off I think. Especially considering what a mess the code for this game is already. Thanks for all the comments and for playing in the first place dudes! Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: GregWS on February 13, 2009, 07:19:54 PM Hey, so where do you get such awesome public domain music from? Is there a site (or multiple sites) of it somewhere? I think I came across a public domain sfx site once, but yeah, nothing this awesome.
Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: Fuzz on February 13, 2009, 11:46:50 PM I really like it, but is this version of the game complete?
Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: HybridMind on February 15, 2009, 03:11:45 PM Good little game here. Charming art style. It only took me about 3 tries before I was able to successfully complete a jump over an obstacle. Basically that was just trying to learn how far a jump goes by how squished your character becomes. I really like the whole stumbling thing that happens if you don't land upright, great touch. I also mega-compressed my character the first time and flew in the air so far over my first obstacle it was a great funny game moment as I read someone else commenting above. Cool tension between wanting to jump high enough yet not so far that you stumble and don't upright before the next obstacle/recharging time comes along.

I think I came across a public domain sfx site once, but yeah, nothing this awesome. http://www.publicdomain4u.com/ has the cream of the crop. There's also some good stuff on archive.org, but you really have to dig for it. I recommend checking them out, if not for game music, then at least just to hear some classic tunes. I'm really glad that you appreciated the uncertainty in jumping and the stumbling. I have had people point those things out as flaws in the game. I see them as, uh, the entirety of the gameplay. I really like it, but is this version of the game complete? Indeed, I decided to wrap it up and release it over the weekend. I'm happy with the simplicity and I'm ready to move onto another game. (Consequently, I just posted (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4765.0) it in Announcements) Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: HybridMind on February 17, 2009, 08:01:47 AM Thanks for that public domain music link, looks pretty cool! I was aware of archive.org but I also find the search up there spotty.
As far as the stumbling goes, I can see how people might miss that it adds a unique bit of gameplay. Guess that might just boil down to a "taste" thing. I really dug that though and think I personally would've been less interested if the little dude just made "perfect" jumps. We have enough of those mechanics. :) Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: GregWS on February 17, 2009, 09:54:10 AM Thanks Tom! ;D
Cream of the crop sounds just great! Title: Re: Dream Hoppin' Post by: Hempuli‽ on February 18, 2009, 02:44:26 PM Awesome music, and good gameplay too. I like. :)
